Except a third party reaching 5% of the popular vote changes things immensely in how that particular party gets funded when it comes to campaigning.
This is really some self fulfilling prophecy shit by writing off third parties because they will never get enough votes. Isn't that the same argument people use to shame non voters?Attacking non voters because they think their vote doesn't matter?
People like you keep saying "the two party is all we have" even though that doesn't have to be the case. Introducing a viable third party into our political environment holds everyone accountable and really should be considered more by both republicans and democrats who swear by this two party bullshit because they're afraid to lose.
But you can't introduce a third party into the current two party system! Even if a third party somehow gained traction, you would still end up with two parties because the third party would eventually
need push one of the other parties out. No matter what you do, with the current system you always end up with two parties.
To be extremely blunt;
Let's say you have party A and B. A is extreme left and B is extreme right. In a regular election the votes split 49 / 51, flipping between the two parties occasionally. People may not agree with everything a party says, but due to the extreme difference between the parties, there is no real question of who they should vote for to best serve their interests.
Now we introduce party C. Party C is a moderate right-wing party.
In the first few elections, party C doesn't gain any ground. As C grows bigger though, more and more voters flock from party B to party C. Some voters from A might switch to party C too, but mostly voters from party B as B and C are closer to eachother on the political spectrum.
Now, because party B lost a chunk of voters to C, but C did not gain enough voters to defeat A ( who lost relatively few voters to C ), A is posed to win every election until either B or C drops out, which puts you back at a two-party system.
If you want a third party, you need to rebuild your political system completely from the ground up.
