Official Nintendo Switch hardware overview

Is there a speed limitation when using USB ethernet adapters? I have gigabit internet, it would really stuck to be limited because of Nintendo's stupid decisions.

You'll have to use a USB 3 to Ethernet adapter to get full speeds. The highest theoretical speed over USB 2 is 480 Mbps.

You're better off just getting a USB 2 to Ethernet adapter because there is no video game that will ever need all that bandwidth. You only need the the adapter for potential latency reasons, not speed reasons.

Thanks for all the kind words on the animation everyone :)

How about this?

Thanks for extending it :) the video to gif converter I used had a 15 second limit oddly.

Posted this is another thread too but this one seems more active.

With the official specs up on the Nintendo website did anybody else notice the Bluetooth support?

It says the Switch console supports Bluetooth 4.1 but the Joy Con use Bluetooth 3.0. Could this mean that they are supporting 4.1 for headset use?

Why bother mentioning support of 4.1 if all of your controllers use 3.0 unless you have another use in mind?

Apparently 4.1 allows your device to act as both a hub and an endpoint simultaneously. Perhaps this will be used for the smartphone connectivity.

I don't thinks so. Since Reggie said you can use Bluetooth headsets this wouldn't be possible since most or maybe all phones can only connect to one Bluetooth device at once.

I think the console and phone will just connect through the cloud since both will have internet connections.

Might as well ask: has there been any additional rumor (or even confirmation) on what nvidia chip is being used? Have we figured out if it's Pascal or Maxwell? Not that it particularly matters.

Ethernet dongle.

Wii and Wii U had that and they didn't have USB 3.0, in fact has it been mentioned if that one works with Switch and vice-versa?

And I don't think the adapter would do anything with USB 3.0 anyway.

USB 2.0 at the start? Anyone buying this thing at launch is crazy. It's clearly not ready.

Not like you'd use it for for accesories that will be designed for USB 2.0 in mind.

I ordered a 200GB SDXC card the other day and got it yesterday, and I hope so too. I just got into panic mode!

if it works like the 3ds does, you can reformat a sdxc card to a different file system to make it work, the switch probably doesnt support the file system the sdxc cards use by default out of the box

With joycons it's roughly the weight of my shield tablet. Little heavier than expected but not too bad. Plus you'll be holding it with two hands.

Didn't know the 32GB storage was separate from the SD card. Thought it just came with a 32GB card.

Well it's internal and by internal they mean that.

Maybe I've misunderstood you, but the internal 32 GB memory is not a removable card. The OS is installed on the internal memory (as alluded to in the description in the OP) and Nintendo can't allow you to remove it. This system is like Wii U's Deluxe model.

Yep, says so on the Japanese site.

Awesome, do you have a link?

Edit:
Found it:

Pro Controller:
Charges with the AC adapter [HAC - 002 (JPN)] or with the included USB charging cable.

Joy-Con Charge Grip:
Unlike the "Joy - Con grip" that comes with the main unit set, you can also charge "Joy - Con" while using the included USB charging cable, so you do not have to worry about running out of the battery.

Headphone/mic jack is super promising, Japanese documents have mentioned this but I think this is the first English one.

Booyeah. Hope I can use my Bose headset mic'd up + wirelessly too.

EDIT: in comparison, you can't use the Bose QC35 on Playstation 4 wirelessly with a Mic or wired with a mic either.

Not just on this front but it seems like all rumor talk has stopped.

Ehhhm, am I the only one that realized that the Switch console itself has accelerometers and gyrosensors built in?! That would actually prove that you are able to play most games without joycons, but with touch and motion omly like today's mobile gaming.

That would make the mobility factor of Switch much more convincing and better mass market acceptance when using on the go.

Can someone confirm?

[*]microSD card slot: Compatible with microSD, microSDHC and microSDXC memory cards.
  • Please note: an update via an internet connection is required to use microSDXC memory cards.

I really hope this note about the internet does not mean that I will have to authenticate every time I want to play a game stored on the Micro SD card? This sort of reads to me that this is a possible scenario and would be a nightmare/step back and more of a console paradigm and not a handheld one.

Anyone else?

Just sounds like a patch for the standard

it means the switch needs a software update to use sdxc cards

They literally just mean you'll need the day one patch.

That's because you likely have the Apple version of the QC35. Apple uses a different standard, and so most non-Apple devices are incompatible with Apple-type headsets and mics.

Sorry on mobile, but to the 3 replies above.

Why would an OS a month out from release need a day one patch to allow Micro SD card hardware functionality?

Unless there is some weird agreement or stipulation to its use, how is this not weird?

3ds never required this type of asterisk.

If there was a "weird agreement or stipulation" it's unlikely anyone here would know what it is. Is it that big of a deal?

For some reason isn't wasn't ready when they started producing Switch systems so they decided to add it in a day one patch. These things can happen, it's not that strange.

SD-XC is a different standard with a different licensing agreement.

No it makes much more sense that it means it's always online obviously.

Again I am just speculating, but it is a weird thing to even note on promotional materials.

Raises more unnecessary questions than give any insight.

And yes it sort of is a big deal if it is along the scenario of I don't have an active internet connection and it won't authenticate my license to play my game. This thing does have a portable aspect and if I am on the go, turn it on and have to search for wifi to authenticate and play a game stored on expandable memory, then yes that is a bad scenario.

I can think of no other portable system (PlayStation or Nintendo) that noted somewhere that an internet connection is required before use.

Again needs clarification, all speculation, but still a possibility and I would be annoyed if so.

Only little snippets.

Like SDXC requires a system update, and BOTW is about 3 hours on battery (which is at least slightly more impressive than 2.5).
I suspect there will probably be a day one update to the console. As long as that's the case and I can use my SD card right away, I'll be happy.

SDXC utilizes a proprietary file system created by Microsoft. So that may be the reason.

It's explained in those very same materials that it is for a system update.

You have nothing to be anxious about.

Sounds like they didn't quite finish up the software side of this at the time of production and will patch it in some time after launch (or at launch, Day0). The original Wii's SDHC support was also patched in later.

Doesn't strike me as having anything to do with authentication.
