Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

You can't not die when playing the tape. With Ethan you escape because you know the password is 'LOSER'. Since you know that you don't have to leak the oil.

It's very clever.

He will always die. : (

Sadly in my game never watched that tape so it made the part with Ethan very tragic on the first go! Lol

It is a good post. Almost too good.
As I said it just reminds me too much of the indoctrination stuff from ME3 when people got mad at the ending. That theory was amazing, and bioware should have just taken it. But alas it didn't happen. So that's why i'm still gonna be weary of anything like that as to not get my hopes up.

Capcom already tricked me once making me think RE7 was gonna be about Jake. Not gonna assume anything with them RE story wise.
Hollywood rebel boy Son of Wesker taking over never made any sense to me,though i can see them in the future when Natalia grows tired of her body.

For me, the best five moments of RE7 are (in order of how they happen, not favorite to least favorite):

-Entering the main hall and exploring the second floor of the Main House
-The long-armed second boss form of Marguerite
-The second floor of the Greenhouse to Eveline's Room
-The Happy Birthday Tape
-The Hallucination House at the end

My absolute least favorite moment is the beginning of the ship when you go along a super linear path in something akin to a walking simulator. I actually love walking simulator games... When done well. RE7's attempt at such a section was not done well imo, and for me is the most dull part of the game.

My opinion.

Ok, I need to know.

How the hell was I supposed to escape the birthday cake room after it had all the oil? So there was no way to succeed if I hadn't known about that

you werent, thats why you watch the tape?

the guy in the tape didnt know and died. Dude, what the hell? :)

Wait, so then how exactly did you get passed that bit with Ethan if you didn't watch the tape first?

Basically you have to do the puzzle and die and then it restores you to the start. I thought it was bullshit the game made you die to figure out the puzzle and then heard about the tape I missed lol

Speaking of least favorite moments. For me probably the rock music fat molded part. Just felt super out of place for me. Also the mines, such as cool location, squandered as a story drop and enemy gauntlet. You get a map, right before you exit the mines. The most wtf was the point of that part.

Solid list. I pretty much agree.

I'd add in everything with crazy Mia at the start of the game as a highlight too. All of that was insane.

Oh of course! Makes sense.

LOL, I forgot about the rock music. That was definitely out of place. It was so....weird. And yeah, the Salt Mine was average.

Yeah, and I mean, it's Capcom. I often enjoy their wacky style of storytelling, but I feel like that post is probably just that guy reading too much into things. As you said, it's too good. If that's all true, then that's amazing, and Capcom are better storytellers than I ever gave them credit for. More likely though, Ethan is just an asshole with poorly written dialogue and a bored-sounding VA, and Hunkfield is a clone of Chris or some dumb shit like that. After the whole ending bit with Alm... err, Eveline, I refuse to believe Capcom has writers that clever. :P

Why are people doubting the dude at the end is Chris, when the credits say it was Chris?

The entire situation is stupid

"Redfield" looks nor sounds like Chris we know, even to a movie releasing months later.
is on the Alpha Team
Is completely cold on the radio(knows of Ethan), unlike regular Chris.
throws you a gun called the Albert-01, looks exactly like Wesker's Samurai Edge.
Is wearing generic Umbrella gear.
is working for Umbrella.

Its just too much.

Though I have to say, I kinda like the idea of chris becoming a bad guy. Just because I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. It's trophy as all hell, but I love. Much like bad blood between family members.

No Jack boss fight? Shame on you Dusk. There is nothing more memorable than Jack wielding his chainsaw-scissors

Man, if you saved Zoey, they should've had the two of you exploring the ship while being chased by an infected Mia. Imagine her roaming the floors, with shit like "How could you choose her over me, Ethan?..." echoing everywhere.

I just want to hear Zoey talk.

Best 5 moments for me

-Jacks first appearance to stalk you
-Jack garage fight
-jacks second stalk
-Jack chainsaw fight
-The rave music in front of Lucas door, making it seem like I was going to a night club.

There's a lot of moments I like, keeping it to 5 is a toughie. I like Jack overall, and like both of his boss fights. I also like when you go behind the first shadow puzzle and go through the hunting room, meet the first Molded, then get to the save room by the basement. Or I love when you answer the phone and it's Lucas and you see the house you haven't been able to enter turning into a blue light rave party. Lots of stuff like that.

Though I have to say, I kinda like the idea of chris becoming a bad guy. Just because I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. It's trophy as all hell, but I love. Much like bad blood between family members.

I feel there's a lot of evidence in RE5/RE6 that Chris has wanted to leave the BSAA for a while and doesn't really believe their strategy is the best one.

I meant cloning a person, I even gave examples :P

is that Ada?

didnt play 6. 6 and both Revs are the ones im missing.
All Tyrant models are based on clones from Sergei Vladimir, the original Tyrant

The Ashford twins were also clones based on the matriach Veronica

Jack fun~ Also happy I wasn't the only one who liked the sudden Rave House after the Lucas scene. I wish Lucas' actual location was as good. My actual hope when I saw the house was that it'd be some cool rave haunted house location, that'd be amazing.

I feel outside of the Happy Birthday Tape moment, there was some missed opportunities with Lucas. Well, hopefully maybe in the future he can be used better as Lucas was the one that got away. I would've loved if Lucas' location wasn't a farmhouse full of explosives, but rather some rave haunted house with weird traps/puzzles and a haunted house thematic.

Groovy!

Also, I agree with this list. Jack stole the show for me. I'd replace the last one with the Birthday puzzle, both the tap and in real time. Watching Lucas get pissed that I solved it without the oil spilling was funny.

I feel there's a lot of evidence in RE5/RE6 that Chris has wanted to leave the BSAA for a while and doesn't really believe their strategy is the best one.

Isn't Chris one of the founders of the BSAA? You would think his word and opinions would have more weight on how they handle things.

This is what I thought it would have been. Would have been AMAZING. Better than unfinished halls and barn fight. Though they tried a little with the sewer gator song playing against the fat molded.

Top 5? Top 5

- whole first hour because I didnt expect the early Mia reveal, dunno why, I assumed it was the typical "find wife at the end" story. Mia's "poltergeist" turn was awesome. The whole thing was one of my favorite intros to a game ever.
- happy birthday tape.
- garage fight! come on, you can get in the car and run him over. also the cop gets done NASTY.
- ring-style bit after killing Marguerite, because even if its cliche, that shit ALWAYS gets me.
- the end sequence with the evie reveal was quite well done

I would almost put the ship part with Mia in there, I actually really liked it. The mines were my least favorite part, followed by the swamp house with Marguerite and the bugs.

I'm pretty sure the "You know who" that Lucas was talking to that they mentioned on the radio wasn't Umbrella or Ethan, but a different company and Evelyn was made by that company.

Yeah felt like that was a bit rushed, the birthday stuff was great though. Speaking of exploding boxes, is there any way to know if one is going to blow or just damn luck?

My top 5 moments

Intro - I couldn't believe the intensity and finding Ethans wife right away, totally not what I expected. Same with the gore
Jack Baker entirely - Though the chainsaw battle, clashing of the blades, and death scene just wow'd me.
Marg - The battle with her and the jump scare intro had me in awe. When she grabs you and you have to shoot her from upside down was tension to the max
Opening the double doors - That leading into the main part of the house to explore was like stepping back into 1990's playing RE again for the first time.
Mia Boat Tape - While it signmals the start of the more action elements, I just really loved how we were truly seeing something more equivalant to the RE series in the whole, what happens to cause this scenario, plus totally didn't expect her to be safe guarding a biological weapon.

Another moment I loved was the interactions with the cop, him dying, finding his head in the fridge and then putting your hand down his freaking neck.

The game is absolutely brimming with awesome, memorable moments. Capcom really delivered when thinking up all of these different scenarios!

anyone got a good youtube video to check the Zoe choice and supsequent changes / ending? I dont know any good RE youtubers.

shoot it and if it blows, it was going to blow :3

that's what I think too. umbrella must be the rival company mentioned in the notes in Mia's section.

I feel like this is gonna be one of those games that inspires an amazing sequel that makes it not look quite as realized in retrospect. Like The Legend of Zelda or Demon's Souls.

It's what I thought and hoped it was, and when you go up the stairs and the first room it seems like it's actually going to be that (with the added Birthday Tape before), unfortunately it ends up just being a pretty drab farmhouse full of explosive wires and boxes. Wasn't bad but did feel like missed potential.

The Fat Molded with the Sewer Gatorz Theme was cool though. I actually think the implication is that the Fat Molded is supposed to be Andre from the Sewer Gatorz, why Lucas plays the main theme for the group, and we see Andre earlier in the tape hanging off a hook like Jack hung the cop who was turning into a Molded before Lucas interrupted it, and we see Andre's corpse is in the water at the start of the game, thus why the Molded would be bloated (because the corpse was left in water).

I didn't expect the early Mia reveal, and to be honest I don't think anyone who played blindly did. It didn't seem like the direction the game was going. I love the garage fight myself, And I do think the Eveline room and endgame stuff was good despite maybe some Ringu clicheness.

I'm pretty sure the "You know who" that Lucas was talking to that they mentioned on the radio wasn't Umbrella, but a different company and Evelyn was made by that company.

I think we should take some time looking at the file with all the crossed out names. The one name we see is H.C.F., which is the name of the organization that Wesker worked for in Code Veronica.

Just finished this...I don't know. I want to say it's a good well made game, because it is. In the horror genre, it's great. It has Resident Evil elements, which are appreciated...but it still didn't feel entirely like Resident Evil to me.

If anything, this felt more of a side story to me than Revelations 2 did (not referring to the gameplay, but storywise). That game at least added to the Wesker storyline and had familiar characters, whereas this game just doesn't seem to have any relation to anything in the series. I'm glad we didn't have a voiceless main character, but I don't like that he was faceless. WTF is the point of that. When you play as Mia, they should at least let you see it.

As a game, this was great I think. As a Resident Evil game, and a fan for almost 2 decades, I felt let down. It has the staples of some of the gameplay elements, but had none of the charm. I felt like all the main games have at least had memorable characters, and no one here really stands out. (at least on the good guys side, I know they tried with the Baker family) There wasn't anyone I liked though...No characters in the vain of Chris, Jill, Leon, Barry, or Claire that you like as characters. Hell, for all of RE6's faults, I at least appreciated how well the Jake campaign made him and Sherry likable characters for me.

Another thing about Resident Evil to me, is even though there's gore and so much death and horror...the series has been known to have some levity to it. This had none really, and that also hurts it a lot for me.

So yeah...I don't know, but I'm thinking I won't really wanna play this much again, unlike games like RE1, 2, 4, 5, and Revelations 2 which I've all played multiple times.

You think this game had no levity???!

Did you play with the sound off

I was wondering if you could maybe use pills to determine, but I don't think so. Maybe the only safe way to check would be to shoot them. I just knifed them though after the tripwires I knew that some were going to be explosive, but knifed every one.

I actually really liked the Tape version of the boat as well. I think it was the superior boat experience, though going through the ruined version wasn't bad, just a bit repetitive and I feel the first version was the better one.

Another moment I loved was the interactions with the cop, him dying, finding his head in the fridge and then putting your hand down his freaking neck.

I felt bad for how much the Baker's defiled the poor deputy's corpse.

that's what I think too. umbrella must be the rival company mentioned in the notes in Mia's section.

Are they ever going to bring back The Family from RE6 lol.

I'm curious how the series will play some of its organization stuff in the future, they now are setting up several different groups for the future. I wonder how they plan to play them all off as we're finally getting to a point where it feels like we're moving away from "villain of the week" and more to something bigger over the series.

I feel like this is gonna be one of those games that inspires an amazing sequel that makes it not look quite as realized in retrospect. Like The Legend of Zelda or Demon's Souls.

I can hope so, I think there's great potential for a RE7 sequel that fixes up a few things and goes more creative in some areas. The potential for something even better is certainly there.

The best part about the early Mia reveal was finding her in the cell like that totally lifeless after you call her name. I was playing that part with my son and we both agreed that she was a lost cause and we were ready to move on without her. Even when we were in the cell it took a lot of courage to approach her. I could have sworn that she'd either 'turned' or was dead and her face was going to be all disfigured. I think i was in shock that she appeared to be in good health.

How does saying "fuck you" or being taunted by the enemy count as levity? Sure didn't make me crack a smile or anything like some of the stuff in previous games.
I want to say Jack and Lucas are two of the funniest characters in the series, while the former still has a sympathetic aspect to him and the latter is more sinister than he appears. They're great! This is like asking if Salazar counts as levity.

Ethan has some good lines as well.

"What the fuck are you, Mia?"

"That's not groovy."

"What the fuck are you, Mia?"

"That's not groovy."
"...Well that's special"

"Alright, fine!"

I mean don't get me wrong, it's not B grade schlock fest like RE4, but there's more levity than REmake had. All the funny parts in Resident Evil OG were from terrible line readings.

Also, they're running out of pathogens. RE8 is gonna be about evil prions or nanomachines or some shit.

Though I have to say, I kinda like the idea of chris becoming a bad guy. Just because I'm a sucker for that sort of stuff. It's trophy as all hell, but I love. Much like bad blood between family members.
Rev1:
Bland Chris for half the game ignoring Jessica till he hooks up with his real partner.

RE5:
Depressed Chris
-villain Jill
-> Chris has a good outlook.

RE6:
Chris decided to take a demotion for some reason.
-Carla fucks him up
->Asshole drunk amnesiac Chris
->Depressed Chris v2
->Reckless asshole Chris
->Bout to retire Chris
->Okay to kill me because I killed Wesker Chris
->Sad and depressed Chris v3
->Reinvigorated Chris

RE7/RE8:
->Evil Chris

please no.

You either die "not a hero" or live long enough to see yourself become the villain

EDIT: Maybe it's an Angel (TV series) situation, where in Angel and company join Wolfram & Hart to try and mitigate the damage the company can do

This is similar to how I feel about the game. Albeit typed better and not as long. The first part especially. It's still obviously resident evil. But story wise it feels like a side story. Especially agree that it is a good game (though not perfect by any means). But I was let down by it as well. Much like you I have no interest in playing it again any time soon. Despite usually playing RE titles more than once relatively soon after aside from Revelations 1 & 2 unlike you.

As for the rest of what you said. I feel the bakers are the levity of this game. A lot of their dialog and mannerisms were what I got the most "this is re" in terms of b feel. While I dislike the look of jack in his mutated form. I loved the dialog there for example.

Ethan being faceless though is total bullshit. No defending that one. There's no need for it aside from some sort of "let the player pretend they are him".

Jack doing donuts is definitely better than Chris and Jake yelling at each for absolutely no reason

"So was it personal? Or were you just following orders?"
