Unfortunately, in a separate Famitsu interview translated by Siliconera, Kitase did not exactly suggest the project is zooming along.

”We're currently brushing up the scene from the announcement trailer. We can now see the line of quality that we're aiming for more clearly, but there's still a ways to go," he said.

If we're interpreting that correctly, Square Enix is still putting together target footage, meaning production hasn't actually kicked off.
That certainly matches up with earlier comments that Final Fantasy 7 still has a way to go.

Kitase went on to make a comment about raising the quality bar part way through Final Fantasy 7 Remake's episodic release if a new generation of consoles is released. that should give you an idea of the time frame Square is expecting.

If you're going to announce a game, at least announce a game you're working on. Maybe they should have saved the announcement for this E3.

Lock it up if old.

edit: Labelled as a rumour because it's the writer's interpretation of a comment.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
That's not what that means, what a weird interpretation. Not even a rumour, just straight up making shit up because they can't read interviews properly.

I mean the project is a long way off and its gonna suffer some of the same Nomura director shittery as Versus, but it's clearly in production.

They announced the game 18 months ago and they're still "brushing up target footage" from the E3 2015 announcement trailer?

This is a joke, right?

So this is saying that part 1 could take THAT LONG to make that the next episodes would be on next-gen consoles?

I completely forgot this game was episodic, lol.

If they aren't working on it then why would they release a gameplay trailer? That CG reveal would be the only thing to show if the project wasn't in production. Not sure I believe this.

Well, thats more on the VG247 guy interpretation than anything, not sure why call it a rumor

But I would not be surprised if it happens...

That thread title is misleading. Not so much a rumour but an individual's own interpretation of an answer by a Japanese dev.

So part 1 will likely be the only one released this gen? I'm not sure how much more evil magic is left in the monkey's paw for this game since the episodic release announcement, but I'm willing to go the distance to see where this crazy train winds up.

Yikes.......

Might be time to downscale or hire way more people to help speed things along while keeping quality.

Scribbles an idea on a piece of napkin. Group thinks the idea is cool. Quick lets announce we are working on a new FF game. If they ask about the game name or concept we just say its in the stage of polishing up.

This game is way further off than I thought, then. I figured Episode 1 by 2018 at the latest. I mean it only needs to be 20 hours long if theyre splitting the main campaign into thirds.
