Resident Evil 7 Spoiler Thread

I was going to post this piece of kind of cute fan art for RE7 here:

resident_evil_7__my_mower__by_practicalal-dax9fmr.png

(I find the whole Mower sticky note you can read and all the mowers you find stored beneath the floorboards to be an amusing little gag in the game.)

But I went down the hole of RE7 fan art that exists so far, and what I learned is that Mia and Lucas have strangely more fan art than anyone else so far. By a pretty large margin even. Not together, just in general. Like, there's maybe 10x more fan art of Mia and Lucas right now than any other character.

That surprises me a bit, but is what it is.

Mia I get cuz she is basically the "Jill or Claire" of the game by being the female playable character.

The Lucas one is a bit strange, would have expected more Jack.

I had no intention of really starting a second playthrough when I first started since this game since it was just mean to be a quickie new release in between clearing out my backlog until Andromeda releases but I came away extremely impressed with the game.

And with an alternate ending and difficulty that switches things up abit, seems worth digging into one more time. Good stuff.

Okay, I'm going to pull myself away from being curious over RE7 fan art now, but I had to post this one (a bit awkward) comic thing that honestly made me snort, I was reading it out of pure curiosity really but oh dear.

Awkward fan art comic a-go-go~

Oh, this one got me. Hilarious!

Its much worse on madhouse because

1) He is essentially moving faster than Ethan can sprint
2) You don't get that down time from him after beating him in the garage.

The second point was a great curveball for that mode.

Plus, I loved going ham on Jack with the saw. Felt like proper revenge for all the ducking and weaving I had to endure before and at the beginning in Madhouse.

Lmao this is too funny. Throughout that entire boss fight I'm like "she must not clean herself down there"

So did anyone else feel that the game made major honourable direct references and took great influence from Silent Hill 2?

- Husband receives letter/email from his wife after '3 years'. 3. Major giveaway.

- Decides to go chasing after her anyway despite the fact that she's (presumed)/dead.

- Very start of game, long distance drives to quiet rural deserted place she's supposedly at, abandons car, sets off on foot some distance away from actual destination, walks through forestry.

- First tangible item is a filed written document with a picture, in inventory.

- First notable sights are a water mass, and a 'figure' shuffling off into the distance to lead player in a direction.

- First signs of something wrong are blood or found remains, not far from aforementioned 'figure' walking away.

- Loving wife, when found, literally turns into a possessed demon before your eyes and starts punishing husband (granted, this doesn't take place until the very end of SH2). Both husbands are either literally told or made to feel at 'fault'.

- Combat introduced with found melee item in reaction to existing threat.

- Obvious duality in awareness, presence and personality of wife character.

- First time you actually see Mary/Maria/Mia, they're all facing the other away, and in Mary's and Mia's cases, there's a bed as a major focus. Maria also dies the second time on a bed.

- Absolutely integral to the story? VHS.

- Lastly, the most telling: the name. Maria/Mia.

Parallels and differences:

- The little girl in SH2 is absolutely innocent and the furthest thing in the game from any responsibility for what's been unleashed, albeit an annoying brat, whereas the little girl in RE7, whilst a victim of sorts, is absolutely responsible for most everything. Also an annoying brat.

- Story begins with a delivered statement of longing from wife, and then delivered is a succinct, albeit polar opposite message, telling husband what to do next: Mary tells you to come, Mia tells you to stay away. Same result.

- Eddie and Lucas were both more capable and predisposed to murder than their counterparts prior to the current events, and both deliberately stage their 'fights' in an arena of sorts, unlike the others encountered more naturally. Exception to this latter rule being saw fight with Jack.

- Breaking away from the 'wife' angle, the one woman in either game who is handled with the most subtlety, but who is always 'there'... has the least dialogue or scenes, but is most integral... is in poorest health and chair/bed bound... is the final boss and 'root cause' of sorts.

There's probably more. Like... a random ass trailer with a save point in it. LOL You get the point.

The whole ending feels 'not real' to me. Ethan basically says to Mia "Oh... you survived? That's cool".

Is this just bad writing/translation/acting?

Everything after the ship fell flat for me, story-wise.

Oh it's far from just Silent Hill 2. The entire game is a love letter to the entire horror genre.

The first half of the game is a huge homage to Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Evil Dead--mixed with Resident Evil tropes. Lucas and his birthday party setup and subsequent traps sequence felt like a deliberate SAW homage. Mia tracking Eveline on the ship was full-on James Cameron ALIENS. The mental connection through everyone affected by the virus through Eveline is reminiscent of The Fly or Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

It's a huge conglomerate of popular horror tropes and references, a big reason why, as a huge fan of horror, I found it to be one of the most satisfactory horror games I've played.

Apparently the state you can get the Bakers to with brutality is quite something.

This was someone on Reddit using the Circular Saw for an hour on Jack and cutting meat off of him, which is apparently permanent and creepy as all fuck.

Well you can get that to chase you... If you take the time to use the Sawblade or other weapons (infinite ammo and all) to peel off Jack's skin, as it will stay like that. Surprised the engine will let you. But it would take some time to saw all of Jack's skin off. XD; But this person did it.

I would think the outfit with gas mask is a dead giveaway that "Redfield" is Hunk.

Yep. You cracked the code. Redfield, also known as Chris Redfield if you saw the credits, is secretly a bit character relegated to bonus modes from past games. Good job.

Y'all going crazy with this shit when they tell you right there that it's Chris Redfield lol. They redesigned him before, you know.

I mean, he thought she was dead for three years and then he finds out she's not the person he thought she was in the first place, doing all this special ops bio terrorism shit...it's not surprising he'd be a little cool toward her..

This explains why Jack's model is made of 120K polygons. The mutilation and damages to his body wouldn't have been possible otherwise.

Umbrella helicopter and DLC being called Not A Hero further cements that its Hunk along with the outfit. Some people just see the forest for the trees.

Uh, no. It's because you're supposed to ask "why is Chris working for Umbrella?" The DLC is titled "Not a Hero" because it's about Chris not necessarily being on the side of good anymore. And even then, he's not necessarily evil; Umbrella ceased to be in 2003. He works for the Umbrella Corps, which is an unrelated organization. Not only that, it might not even be the Umbrella Corps as they were previously; the logo is different.

His voice actor in the Japanese version of the game is the same as it was for Chris in prior titles. RCS likely didn't return because of the voice actor strike, or he simply wasn't asked. Additionally, the gun Chris throws down to you, the Albert-01? That's Wesker's Samurai Edge that was modified to kill BOWs. The one you get in NG+ is a replica called the Albert-01R.

I've reiterated this stuff so much at this point. It's ridiculous. He's Chris. There's so much evidence pointing to this, including the game telling you to your face "this is Chris, his name is Chris". Honestly, this whole thing just reminds me of people being disappointed in ME3's ending and clinging to the Indoctrination Theory.

The one seeing the forest for the trees is you, I'm sorry to say.

Damn, mutilated Jack looks fucking dope.

It's too bad he is MIA for most of the time he's alive in-game. It would have been sweet to see him gradually reach this status after several encounters.

I did notice in my playthroughs that damage was permanent, but I had no idea you could take it that far lol.

Hopefully you aren't too critical of Capcom when it turns out to be Hunk.

Nah. He has menace. He has personality.

Even his final boss fight was just mediocre.

I agree that he has personality. He's cool as a character. It's just that his final boss fight requires a lot of agility and fast movement, but you're stuck with a character that is really slow and awkward. It's just a slog.

I see what you mean. Yeah, trying to chase an angle on his weakspots while moving at the speed of a gentle jog did suck. I appreciated the tiered nature of the state but yeah, it's an awkward boss fight.

Come to think of it despite the fact that Madhouse changes stuff up I don't really see the appeal of playing it again. Mainly due to the fact that most of the encounters in the game are shit since fighting molded is boring...and there are only 3 encounters that I'd consider to be "interesting" in the entire game...And two of them are with Jack (Chainsaw fight and the one time he is stalking you in the main house) while the third is the Marguerite boss fight.

Every other significant encounter is either just short or terrible. For instance you can pretty much end up skipping the Marguerite stalking depending on which door you open, the first time Jack stalks you it's over in seconds while the first Mia boss fight is the worst fight in the game due to the fact that she runs at you while you have this shitty pistol and nothing else.

Also the low FoV coupled up with slow movement makes it really awkward to fight anything.

I think Jack might be the worst boss fight in the history of video games.
I thought he was unkillable? Pfft, of course he is, the game is an Outlast ripoff. Your weapons are totally useless, why did you expect a good boss fight when all you can do is run and vault and use your fucking camera?

I had good reason to think he was unkillable though...because I'd killed him several times and he never died. Plus, several reviews of RE 7 mentioned Outlast. So it wasn't completely insane of me to compare it to Outlast. Although once I put more time into the game, it became clear that it's a lot more old school (pre 4) Resident Evil than it is Outlast.

Regardless, worst boss fight in the history of video games is way hyperbolic, no? You can dislike it with all your heart, but remember that there are genuinely terrible games with straight up awful mechanics. If you criticize those games for worst boss fights, that would be validated. But when you claim the final Jack fight as such, that is just flat out wrong and blown way over the top. Many enjoyed it, although it certainly isn't one of the best in the franchise.

My point is, when you jump on the hyperbole bandwagon, it only serves to drive negative responses and at times, no discussions can be had. It's the plague that condemns most GAF threads. If you aren't enjoying the game, best to just drop it.

Edit: Just to add a more appropriate reply to your post, yes, the game undeniably drew inspirations from Outlast/P.T./Amnesia. The opening was a lot more like those games than classic RE. However, if you want to call RE7 a clone of those games, you're being reductive for very obvious reasons that have been given countless times.

Silly question. Are the enemies ie moulded random respawn or once you kill them that is?

Is it safe to explore i just cant cope with being shitted out all the time.

Unfortunately, yes. Too many.

I still dig RE7 a lot despite the fact that Capcom clearly thought to themselves 'let's scoop up some of those Silent Hill players since Konami doesn't want them'.

This was someone on Reddit using the Circular Saw for an hour on Jack and cutting meat off of him, which is apparently permanent and creepy as all fuck.

If so they should have been more generous with the damage model on Jack, then. Bullets should have torn chunks of flesh off - shotgun blasts should have torn the meat from limbs.

It's easy to exploit, but not very fun and very cliche.

That looks like the same model from when he was burned. Still it's something most people will miss because it should have been more apparent in the fights that you can do visible permanent damage plus no one really fights him while he is stalking you.

It's easy to exploit, but not very fun and very cliche.

His design isn't that original either, first time i saw Mutated Jack i thought "I feel like I've already fought it in some other RE game", the "shoot the eyes" mechanic felt familiar too.

Great game but man did they drop the ball with the final third -- from lucas and on the game is mostly a big turd.

I saved Mia, as seemed natural, but I looked up what happens if you save Zoe instead --- She dies, then somehow Mia is waking up from the boat crash in the same spot anyway? Huh? How'd she get there?

So I noticed another scenario on my second playthrough where they're practically telling you that Eveline is the Grandma. The scene where Evie forces you to watch the tape on the ship? Well, she's sitting in a chair and she watches you, following your movement with only her head. Just like she does when she is the Grandma!

The whole ending feels 'not real' to me. Ethan basically says to Mia "Oh... you survived? That's cool".

Ethans reactions to Mia the whole game are kinda off anyways. He finds his wife alive after being presumed dead for 3 years in the beginning of the game and he's just like "what are you doing here?"

I get the game didn't want to get too emotional or serious but Ethan and Mia's relationship feels off.

Holy shit that is cool as hell.

I think Jack might be the worst boss fight in the history of video games.

All of his fights are excellent. Particularly the second fight with the chainsaw. It makes great use of the mechanics and space and adds a cinematic flourish that is firmly in your control and rooted in the game mechanics. Lots of interactivity and different ways to do the fight, too.

Two questions for those who have completed the game on Madhouse:

At what parts does the game actually autosave? I remember there being a save after the first Mia fight, at the start of the dinner scene, but after that I've no clue if the game has autosaved at all. Does anyone have like a list of times when it autosaves?

I'm now at the part where I have to go to Lucas's playhouse but if I do that can I return to the Baker estate? Should I do whatever I plan on doing there before I proceed to the playhouse? I think I might have missed some ancient coins.

The Marguerite fight was intense, took me five or six tries. What a bitch!
