Hold a direction and just tap 3 times every time he gets near you. I beat him first try.

Finally just did it. 9 times out of 10 I got fucked by the camera angle (can't see shit captain), the other times I would somehow get hit even though I would be 100% fully behind him (hitboxes how do they work). This is really fucking dumb. Probably worth noting I haven't had the slightest problem with the game or dodging in actual combat, it's the crowd + camera angle that makes this minigame specifically really shit -_-.

Edit: Beat katana guy first try. Maybe I'm just weak to men in purple suits? >_>

Man... I was REALLY excited for this game and after putting about 5 or so hours into it, while I am really engrossed in the story, I find the gameplay to just be.... boring. Does it pick up or have I pretty much seen the formula?
Keep on investing in yourself.

To me personally, what makes it fun is trying to pull off different moves, situational moves and finishing moves. If you play on Normal then you can get by with basic Square and Triangle combos plus healing items but it becomes more fun if you go the extra mile and try to pull off the new move you just learned or try to go for finishing moves with a weapon, close to a wall, around other enemies etc. It makes the combat a whole lot more satisfying and makes you feel in control. Train with the masters and upgrade abilities and you will get more options.

dead souls is good!

Oof. I had some fun with it and it was nice to see the characters in new and strange situations but I found it far too clunky to really enjoy it that much. It's not something I'd recommend to Yakuza fans unless they've played every other game in the series and are starved for something new to play. I honestly couldn't call it a good game though, especially for non Yakuza fans.

How do you switch styles so fast?

Go to the shrine/temple and purchase the fast change shirt/jacket by spending your completion points. Equip it and watch yourself fly between the styles crazy fast.

EDIT: Looks like I needed quick post clothes too ^

that's true. the controls were clunky and i think it would be hard to recommend to a new yakuza fan. but i played it after going through 3+4 and was fatigued. so it was a nice change of pace with the returning characters having a fun story. i hope if they release the ps3 games on ps4 as remasters they fix the camera/controls for it.

So i've been trying to figure out the Essence Of Finishing Blows move for over 20 minutes now, but i can't seem to get it right. Any tips?

OFCOURSE I GET IT RIGHT AFTER I POST THIS. >->

Quick Change Clothes. You can acquire them at the CP Shrine.

There's an item you can equip that lets you change styles mid-animation. You can buy it from the shrine for a bunch of CP.

Edit: I wish I had Quick Post Clothes.

Game changer, damn. Thanks!

How do they rip off their shirts so majestically? One of the guys had a full suit and neck tie and bam it all came off in one fluid movement to reveal his back tattoo, lol.
How does Kenshiro's shirt and jacket burst yet he's seen wearing the exact same pair a few panels later?

Don't question it.

Yuki's Last Training Session and Side Quest:

I kinda figured that the guy she was meeting was her father. Still was hilarious they thought she was meeting a boyfriend. The interactions between her and Majima are great too with the training sessions.

Still think I might do most of the side stuff and, then, start another playthrough to get some other trophies I missed in the story at some point. I still want to beat and play other games though, so I won't be playing this as much, just on occasion. Really enjoying my experience a lot!

we live in an exciting time for yakuza.

i felt
Kuze
got the short end of stick both instances:
one where his pinky got cut off. and second, when he was untying Tachibana. i think Kuze was just doing what he was ordered to do. tell Kiryu to hand himself in to the cops and getting the information for the Lot through interrogation. i don't think Kuze wanted to kill him but once he died Kiryu walk in and then took his anger out on Kuze. i really felt for Kuze and thought he was legit by the end.

Kuze didn't wanted Tachibana dead because he still had to take information from him.

When that idiot went ahead and killed Tachibana, I fully expect him to be killed off screen because he fucked up their mission big time.

I always assumed these games were Japanese made, GTA type clones and not quirky beat em ups with a pretty deep combat system and loads of side stuff to do. I'm super late to the party here...but I think I may pick this up when I'm in the city on Wednesday. It looks pretty fucking rad...

I have a question about the fourth style you unlock - one of the entries says that 'certain upgrades' from other styles apply to it as well. Is there any way to tell which abilities it's talking about? Just passive stuff, or things like gaining hp from heat actions, or something else?

well...after some research I can tell that:

- the one that regenerates heat when low hp from Rush style works
- the heal on heat attack one from Brawler does not

also mr.shakedowns are giving me 2.6 billion each now goddamn. Still scary because on hard mode if you get hit after they enter the yellow mode you're dead no matter how much hp you have.

After yelling at the TV for an hour or two, I've finally beaten all disco songs with 3 stars on each difficulty. Please tell me there isn't more than one disco substory, because I never want to disco dance ever again.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
This fucking game.

I love the Yakuza series, and I've been a fan since the first one in 2006... but holy hell, this game is on such another level that it's scary. First 2017 release I've played, and already a real GOTY candidate. It's just so good.

Man, this Miracle Johson substory is hands down one of the funniest substories I've ever played in a videogame.
I lol'd so hard with the blockbusters "Indian Jeans" and "A.T."

My favourite in the game so far along with the UFO catcher girl, Shooreh Pippi and the porn magazine kid ones lol

^Haha, everyone seems to love the Miracle Johnson and dodgy vending machine with the adult mags in it missions since they're so funny.

This fucking game.

Craziest thing about this is it's directed by the guy who Directed Dead Souls, ffs (easily the weakest Yakuza game of them all) and yet he's now directed one of the best games in the series if not the best (at this point, I think it is the best one). The game is also written by the same guy who was writer on 3, 4 and 5 and yet wrote this and it's just got this magnificent and cohesive story that's actually missing some of the silliness (still there obviously, but it's way more gritty like the first two Yakuza games again). I'm actually surprised by how melancholic and dark this game's story gets at times.

It also looks like this is the most into the development Nagoshi himself has been in some time, since he's listed as a Director on this game, for the first time since he directed Binary Domain, which was ages ago. This is the best written Yakuza since 2 for me, it's simply fantastic and the villains are amazing.

Zero is the best one full stop. I never played this much side missions in past Yakuza games. I'm still in Chapter 8 or so (after perhaps 30 hours? dunno), but already a multi billionaire and nearly done with the hostess business. The game almost doesn't cockblock you, if you want to max out right there, then do by all means.

And the story, well, its perfect. The delivery is awesome too.

Any information on how well Yakuza 0 has sold? I hope it does well.

My dream is that Yakuza Restoration gets localized too....who knows maybe they'll consider it if Zero and Kiwami sell well!

The hostess club minigame is definetly more fun and isn't as grindy as the real state one.

Basically real state sucks balls, at least gives tons of money.

Also why Majima wants to go back to Yakuza world? You own a legitimate cabaret club and drowning in dough and girls. You stupid fuck.

Hostess Club battles aren't so bad. The first 2 were hard, and I won with a 300k difference or so. But the other ones I dominated. I think its all down to level up your squad, making sure you have all traits covered and customize the platinum to inprove their traits and less overlap.

The third battle I won with 39m ish vs 30m. The 4th went 50m vs 25, and the final about 80m vs 50m?

I always pop Fever as soon as it was available, never waited for level 2.

If I were Majima I would stay at the Sunshine as well, but Sagawa and all..

Credit where credit is due, Dead Souls probably did the best job out of the 3 games with 4+ protagonists at creating a game that felt like it had a cohesive narrative throughout. It's obviously all tied to the bottom line of "there are zombies in Kamurocho, find out why" which is part of the territory when you're making a zombie game, but that made the whole thing feel more directed, tbh. Every character had their individual goals, but there was a very ever-present thread from start to finish for each character, which neither 4 nor 5 really had (the closest thing would be
Lily
in 4, I guess). Not that it really has much to do with 0 considering the structure is entirely different than 4, Dead Souls, or 5, but...

oh but don't get me wrong, Dead Souls is a massive drag of a game, lol. I hardly think it's terrible or anything, the writing and fanservice are really fun, but the gameplay is just painfully repetitive.

It would have been great had they got this out before the holidays season if for no other reason than just to get some GOTY talks/recognition. This would easily top my GOTY list. People won't remember this game in 10 months which is a shame.

Just finished the game, first real Yakuza after messing around with 4 a while back. Clocked in at around 55 hours and 27%. It got to a point where the story was too good to not just press through it. (As well as having this, RE7, Nioh, Nier, FF14 and about a billion other things to play soon)

Anyway, super enjoyed it and looking forward to Kiwami. They have a Yakuza fan for life now!

P.s finally a first post. Took the longest time to get verified ha!

Hmmmmm... just completed the first substory that left me wanting more of the story behind it. Do we find out more - in this game or another - about the people in Substory #75, "Mystery Caller"?

I think Yakuza 0 does well. I saw it charting here and there, was also sold out at various retailers. Sega at the very least must've undershipped it. The rave reviews help as well.

Just popped my JPN disc in for the first time in about a year. Do I need to do every heat action for 100% completion in this game?
