Television Displays and Technology Thread: This is a fantasy based on OLED

Never heard of that site. What's their return policy? Warranty period?

edit: You should have bought from Richer Sounds tbh. They price match and have a good return policy + 6 years of warranty.

No idea. I'm moving abroad soon anyways so in terms of long-term warranty I would be in a world of hassle in any case. As long as I'm covered for initial few months I'm fine.

I cancelled my KS8000 order from earlier today and went for the LG OLED55B6V.

Price has greatly reduced in the UK. It launched at £2799 and now I got it for £1619. Pretty great drop. KS8000 in comparison: £1799 -> £1249.

@Burdy75 informed me that it doesn't have the HDR switching annoyance present with KS8000 (that could be patched out any moment or never). Im hugely in favor of practical/easy-to-use solutions (ergo I'm purely digital these days when it comes to gaming, movies etc). And you know... OLED. I had to go down from 60" to 55" but I'm fine with that. Hopefully 4K detail is good enough that I won't be disappointed once I go back up to 65" or so in 2019.

Congrats! You made The right decision.

sigh okay:

Priotities:

- Screen Size. 60-65 inches. I'm done with the 50s
- Input Lag / Refresh Rate for gaming
- Price.

People will probably suggest OLED but I hear that there is still some temporary retetion in this technology. I am relunctant to bother with this shit after the permanent burn in on my Panasonic Plasma despite the care I gave it

Great googly moogly on that price. That's not far off what the Sony Xd930 was late last year. I paid £1399 I think and justified it as the B5 was £1900 at the time.

Still I'm happy enough with my set and look forward to my usual three year update with OLED and HDMI 2.whatever by then.

I can relate with your burn in fear, as I have a 50" Panasonic Viera plasma and HATE the fact that I constantly have to be on guard over static images, logos, HUDs and whatnot... but over the years I learned how to take care of it and avoid the issue.

That fear also made me nervous when searching for a new TV and I really wanted OLED but then I heard about the image retention on it. I read and studied it a bit but so far it doesn't seem to burn into the display like on the plasma. It's a retention that goes away very quickly or at least by turning the TV off for a few short minutes. One website even let the menu screen of The Fifth Element DVD hang on their OLED for well over 24 hours if I'm not mistaken, and yes, there were clear signs of retention. What would have been a ruined plasma screen, went away pretty quickly on the OLED they said.

Read more about it here: http://televisions.reviewed.com/fea...creen-burn-in-problems-causes-image-retention

So, I decided to not let that control me too much and went ahead and bought the E6 (maybe should have gone with the B6 but happy with my E6). I can agree it has image retention and very quickly will it pick up static images BUT... they go away faster than you think. The fear, the "bloody hell dangit stupid sh.." monologue I had with myself over the plasma is pretty much gone because so far, what little retention I've seen, is really only temporary. Very temporary, so much so that you really won't notice it much and when you do, you'll forget about it very quickly as it clears off.

Got my LG B6 set up in Game Mode pretty much exactly how I like it.

Would anyone be able to chip in on how Gamma and Black Levels should be set on both the TV and the various consoles? I currently have an Xbox One S, PS4 & Wii U hooked up, and recall reading that all three handle the settings differently. (Believe black levels are outright broken on Xbox, unless that's been fixed?)

Otherwise, I'm in absolute love with this TV. Very glad I listened to everyone and paid extra for the OLED, the picture quality is night and day compared to my old LCD. Now to wait patiently for the HDR Game Mode patch to arrive in the UK...

If you haven't touched the black level setting on the TV, your PS4 should be set to 'Limited' otherwise you will crush blacks.

With my B6, I had the video settings in the Pro set to automatic. Do I need to change RGB to limited and the TV black level to low?

Yup. Auto on the TV and Limited on the PS4 should work too. It's easy to figure out if they are set right as the image will either look ridiculously washed out, or you won't have any shadow detail, depending on which is set incorrectly. Leaving the PS4 on 'Auto' doesn't work with the B6 though, for whatever reason.

Hello, everyone! First time poster. I've been browsing this thread for a couple months, anxiously waiting to participate, and I'm very happy to be able to do so now.

In any case, I picked up a 55" B6 OLED tonight at my local Best Buy, and I'm thinking I've probably lost the panel lottery here. As you can see in the close-up picture, the upper right corner seems defective. I mean, there's no physical damage of any kind, but something's definitely up with that corner. So, my question is, has anyone seen this, and is it something that could go away within a couple hundred hours of use? Any input is appreciated, thanks very much!

On a related note, 5% gray looks pretty bad overall, especially on the right. Returning/exchanging TVs is always is a hassle, and I'd like to avoid it if at all possible. :-/
Run some other slides because your pictures dont at all match the grey tests on rtings. Or go to the store and run the same tests on their floor model.
Also, return it within the week so you can tell them it came like that and you swap it at the store. Any longer and they might tell you to use the warranty with LG and that will be a huge hassle.

I see no difference between Limited and Full provided the Black Level setting on the TV matches them.

What am I not seeing?

If you use Xbox One as a media player, it forces all content to limited no matter the system or tv settings.

So it is best to just set it to limited for games as well.

Thanks. The TV black level was already on low so I switched the Pro to limited. Can't really tell any difference so far but at least I guess it's correct now.

I need to try and replicate rtings test methodology for that picture with a proper camera. The two pics I posted here were taken with my phone, and all of my lights off. The problem corner wasn't an issue with regular content on Friday night, but it seems to be getting worse now.

Anyway, the TV doesn't fit in my car, so I've arranged to have them bring me a new one, and take this one back. The only downside is that delivery/exchange is scheduled for the 17th. I hope I won't have any issues like you mentioned. I thought they'd always honor returns/exchanges within the 2-week period as long as there's no physical damage.

Just had to restart my price-rewind, because after I found a deal lower than the maximum refund amount I was told to close my current rewind request, so that the system would stop looking and email them all my documentation. I send the email with all the documentation, got an automated response back saying that they got my docs, and then nothing for a week. I called up only to be told that they just closed out both requests without saying anything, and I had to open a new one over the phone with them. Had I not called to check up, I would have had no idea.

Hmm so after playing with my B6 all day, whilst SDR content looks absolutely flawless I'm having issues with HDR. There's what could best be described as artifacting on the image every time I give it an HDR source, lots of flickering in the blacks.

Is this a known issue which can be easily fixed by messing around with settings/HDMI cables, or have I got a faulty unit?

I want to buy oled but I play a lot of pc games, and games with static UI's that cause image retention. I know the whole time I play on it it's gonna be bothering me.

god damn it

Having two kids in the waning hours of 2016 nets me a gigantic tax return. As such I am in the market for a new TV. We currently have a 32" 720p TV as our main TV. Our living room isn't that big so I'm thinking of something around 42-48". I want to keep it under $400. I've got a PS4 Pro but I honestly don't give a shit about 4K or smart features. I know Sony is coming out with HDR 1080p TVs this year, but people are saying it won't be worth it without them being 1000 brightness units rather than the 300 units they are expected to be.

To sum up:
$400 max
42" to 48"
1080p minimum, 4K not required
2 HDMI ports minimum
Smart features not required
Great for gaming
Preferably not a Chinese brand unless it's really good

B6 retail prices is now cheaper than/equal to many upper-mid range edgelit lcd, another year and I think oled will take over.

Kinda tempted but I think I'll wait for the A1E. Should get it for roughly the same price at launch.

lol wut? If the A1E comes in at £1599 at launch, I'll be buying two.

You'll only get permanent burn-in if you never turn the TV off and only display the same image 24/7. i.e. it ain't gonna happen. The panel cleans itself every 4 hours when you turn it off. I've had mammoth 12 hour sessions and not had any problems.

Doesn't matter if its permanent. It matters that it's present at all. I have ocd about this kind of thing. Gonna have to go with lcd and save myself the anxiety, as well as a couple hundred dollars

Image retention is the temporary annoyance, its different from burn in

I saw the B6 55 in person yesterday and it looked great. However I could still discern picture imperfections when standing two feet away. It was showing a theater-play of some kind. No idea what source it came from and if motion-processing was active. Clearly higher res than 1080p but not a perfect real-life picture. I'm just being unfair I guess. ;)

Right next to it was the LG series above B and it had a much cooler demo video with black backgrounds with lots of colored balls and paint being thrown across in really fast editing between scenes. Looked seriously impressive w/super blacks and no trailing of motion or sharp colors. Does anyone have an URL to online demo-videos I could put on a USB?

Bump: Anyone know a fix or cause for this unusually annoying green bar on the side? Only ever shows up 5-10 minutes after turning the tv on, then the colour green gradually gets more vivid.

Am I an idiot for considering returning an E6 and getting a KS8000 instead? While the E6 is a good TV, it's not perfect (banding, justering, poor near-blacks, poor game mode with wrong colour gamut). The KS8000 offers higher brightness, game mode with calibration options, higher motion resolution and is cheaper. The plan is to keep my TV for a couple of years and then get a Panasonic or Sony OLED anyways.

Thoughts?

Goto post #93 for basic settings, then find demo vids here.
But in the end, you need to watch a 4K HDR Blu-Ray to fully appreciate what the TV is truly capable of.

I think it is a very bad idea. And I would assume, that you either have a faulty display, or have the TV calibrated wrong. On my C6 there are none of the problems you mentioned.

Anyone know if $2k is the lowest the lg 55's will go for a while? In the market to get one but was curious about where and when to find the best deal.

Their 2017 models are a couple of months away so I see them dropping lower at some point.

I think you're crazy. There's no such thing as a perfect TV but it's a lot better than the KS8000.
