Halo 5: Guardians |OT5| Is HaloGAF irrelevant now?

It wasn't a real competition, so I was just going with the first person who quoted lol. Only a mad man would consider typing that..

..a mad man with an injured hand. I'll send it to you if you want it.

If Karl doesn't want it, I'll just give it to the first person that calls dibs.

Ya turd.

To say that Halo 5: Guardians launched with a lack of content would be an appropriate statement to make. It was missing key features like Forge, a functional Theater mode, and an unstructured PvE mode. It would also be an appropriate statement to say that Halo 5: Guardians has added a substantial amount of content since it launched. Forge has delivered the most robust maps in the Halo series to date, and 343 Industries brought their own (albeit flawed) spin to Firefight. Aside from just features, 343 Industries launched Halo 5: Guardians with a specific tool that allowed them to constantly update and improve player identity. That tool is the requisition system. I’ve made posts and statements before about how key player identity is in forming a player’s experience over the lifetime of the game and series, but the two points I want to address are how and why players select their identity in-game. To do that I’ll cover a brief history of player identity first.

Halo CE’s player identity was simply color. Halo 2’s player identity was simple. Each player had an emblem that would appear on their character and by their name in the menu UI. Additionally, they could choose whether their player model was an Elite or a Spartan. Halo 3’s evolution allowed for armor customization and a player tag about friendly waypoints. Reach expanded on these and offered a wider array of choices on armor, but players were forced to be a Spartan or an Elite depending on the game mode. Halo 4 did something that Halo games had never done before and that was tying player emblems to the progression system. The most basic form of identity was relegated to how long a player had been playing Halo 4. Lastly, Halo 5 tied all forms of player identity to its progression system of requisitions.

This is a two-edged sword. On one hand, the player cannot create an identity when they first pick up the game. Some players are turned off by this because there’s nothing to distinguish them from the crowd if they are an average player. Other players see a goal in unlocking a certain piece of armor or a helmet and they chase that piece of identity. Now why do they latch on to a piece of identity? This will require getting a bit more nitty gritty with Halo: Reach’s system of unlocking cosmetic items. Halo: Reach required players to earn credits, which could then purchase the different cosmetic armor sets. There were definitely a few trends in players on picking a Reach armor. The main trends in Reach’s players were 1) how much the item cost, 2) how much the player resonated with the armor, 3) how much it looked like an in-game character. In the first case, a lot of players would have the most expensive item whether it was expensive in terms of time invested or credits, players would don these items. The Skull Pilot of Inheritors was commonplace in the waning days of Reach. In the second case, it usually dealt with the armor that they used in Halo 3. EOD was a popular helmet in Halo 3 and its return in Reach was a reason to use it. A quick side note here: the CQB helmet in Reach was locked behind an Xbox Live Gold paywall of Halo Waypoint on the 360, so its popularity might be much lower than what it was in Halo 3. As for the last point, many players would dress up in order to look like a character that was easily recognizable. Players would run around in the multiplayer trying to make themselves look like the Noble team characters. One character that they could somewhat accurately represent was the Master Chief himself.

Master Chief has gone through three iterations on his armor design throughout the series, but arguably his most popular is the original look, the Mark V set. Halo 5 used the requisition system to release a Mark V variant in one of the content updates, but it wasn’t quite the look he had in the original game. Going back to a previous point, players would sometimes choose an armor set because they resonated with it in previous games. Mark V has been in every mainline title except Halo 2, so players can feel a continuity aspect to it. Giving players the choice to their identity from the start is important also, and there’s no reason why an iconic armor set should be withheld from the next mainline Halo title.

anyone wanna swap V-Day packs?
Ha, I edited my post when you posted. I'll trade, what's your G/T?
I'm not sure if it says who sent it or not but if not, mine is "EYEL1NER." You can wait to send until you receive mine if you want.
EDIT: NVM about what is your G/T, I found it in the list. That is handy, that they have a menu you can gift from with everyone in your SC in it.

I swear we swapped before last time! Haha.
I think we did. I sent mine anyway.
EDIT: Got the message that you sent me one. I didn't see it in the REQ menu so I rebooted and was able to redeem it. I picked up a Legendary DMR (Longshot + Energy Bayo) and Hannibal Wasp cert. I'm glad I got the Hannibal cert, I think (I can't remember which non-standard Wasp I liked more, the Oni or Hannibal).
Thanks!

Nice. I got the Fotus Synchronize and Nightfall helmets. Little over 10 packs left til I have them all.

It's complete BS the Classic Helmet Pack is only available for another week.

Hey, I got Supernova and Competitor. Awesome.

Since it's what fixed the dropped games for me, have you checked your packet loss? It might be that.
Packets are fine. Only happens on this game and only since the exact day of the previous update. This isn't the only way it stops you from playing. It just messed with me and let me play a bit first this time.

Aye, truer words never spoken. I'm glad I haven't been booted since I resolved my connection issues, but damn it all if Halo 5 doesn't have some seriously spotty client-server connections. Even other games on the Azure Cloud servers, like Titanfall and Gears of War 4, didn't kick me nearly as often as Halo 5. Bonus points for Gears 4 never kicking me from any match while my packet loss was through the roof while Halo 5 did it every other game.

So, two things:

When I opened my Valentines Day gift pack, and error occurred and as far as I know I never saw or received the contents. Is there a way to double check?

Another larger issue, frequently when I start matches (primarily Warzone) the game crashes back to the dashboard. This has been a problem that has been happening to me the past three days or so... am I alone, or this a known bug?

Yeah, happened to me and Kaos last night as well, in addition to the clip I posted earlier. This build of the game / servers are unstable as fuck.

If you guys think Guardians is unstable you should try Forge. It's been awful since the last update, Disconnecting from lobbies and crashes. Plus, the grenade launcher has the hunter cannon as its kill feed icon and the Carbine has a sword reticle. Who needs to play test or have any quality control am I right?!

I did my first customs night not long ago, constant disconnecting. Never had this happen in any of my games before.

if this is what servers do, then just give me peer to peer for customs instead.

I think it would help if we all stopped conflating these issues, by which I mean stop talking about them and pretended everything is fine and purchase Halo Wars 2™: Ultimate Edition!!

Discover for Yourself the Facts™ which historic path this exciting piece of entertainment software takes! :
  • A buggy shitshow (completed by poorly managed contractors) that eventually becomes a marginally functional game!
  • A good game that slowly devolves into an apparently unmanaged error-ridden clusterfuck!
Available February 17, 2017. February 21, 2017 for the Less Profit Standard Edition.

Why not a buggy shitshow by contractors that slowly devolves into an unmanaged error-ridden clusterfuck that's marginally functional?

Sold off some additional REQs and got my pack.

Mk V really, really does not look good with a huge selection of the more rounded armor sets (even the Mk V Alpha, which I quite like). Clashes way too much. Luckily there's the Reach throwback stuff to add.

Fallen Xbot (cannot continue gaining levels in this class)
balance issues and design direction aside, i really REALLY hope halo 6 is more polished.

Maybe if we spend an evening playing HMCC again, it won't seem so bad when we go back to H5?

I initially tried it with the Mk. IV armor, but decided to go back to Jorge's armor. That armor goes good with everything.

It definitely emphasizes how sleek and rounded the GEN2 armor is versus the much boxier earlier designs. Even if I like both they're pretty incompatible. Especially given how boxy the Mk V is, it needs something with more heft to balance it.

Had they not done some wacky proportions with the Mk V Alpha helmet I would have liked to have seen a sleeker version of Mk V, because I actually really like the armor that goes with it. Almost reads as what I would have redesigned MkVI to look like, maintaining some of the tank feel while making it sleeker.

Currently rocking Intruder. Close enough to that classic Mk V.

Did they quit, or did their game crash?

This game doesn't even let you get mad at quitters anymore, since who the hell knows if they actually quit or not.

Game starts with 3v4. As soon as game starts one quits so its 2v4 the first 20 seconds of the game..im doing my thing and yeah next guy quits. So its just me for about another 30 seconds and i then quit.

Doubt all of them just crashed.

Maybe H5 (and H6) should have Dota 2-like quit system. The first one to quit has some time to rejoin, if not, everyone else is free to quit without penalty. The one who starts things gets punished.

(And naturally there should be system that promotes even games because otherwise things just suck for everyone except smurfers.)

Definitely Halo 6, though it'd be nice to have in Halo 5 as well. Quitting in solo queue ranked is an epidemic, and disconnects happen too frequently to not allow for rejoining games.

Yeah a join in progess of last game might work.

When i played hots id get disconnected and then if the game was still going it would try to reconnect me to that game instead of allowing me to queue a different playlist.

Perhaps if a quitter does quit they cannot join a different playlisy until that game is over or have the option to rejoin within a certain timeframe.

Howver this would lead to more prorated xp and rank +/- calculations and more stuff i vsnt think of atm.

Wow, BTB is, without exaggeration, unplayable. It's not just the terrible (and I do mean terrible) framerate drops. The lag is something else. (That's if I actually load in, of course.)

I've never seen any "AAA" game perform as poorly as BTB in Halo 5 did for me. Seriously, how does this pass certification?

BTB didn't always perform this poorly. 343 pushed an update to the engine that borked performance on forge maps.

It's hilarious, cuz the Halo 3 BTB maps in 2007 look far and away better than any forge map you get in Halo 5.

As shallow as it may sound, I just couldn't accept them anymore. They are ugly, flat, and boring compared to everything else we get in the MP shooter genre today. They also perform far worse. lol

Now we know
which Halo ring is the one at the legendary ending of Halo 5...

Come on man don't tell me that's a wars 2 spoiler.

Unless you're just speculating...

If not, I know you tagged it but I wouldn't expect a wars 2 spoiler in here without it being stated.
