FAST RMX / Shovel Knight for Switch launch, no VC at release

Im ok with no VC on release date

Im not ok with $5 for a nes game

Or $8 for a snes game

It should cost like $1 and $1.50. People would buy without even blinking. Make a weekly video showing the games of the week and people will buy all of em if the price is low

And i like the drip feed VC releases. Gives you time to play the games. If you have all the games at your hand in one sit (like people love to defend the idea Netflix-style-VirtualConsole) you just wont bother to play a game to the end. You keep going from game to game

edit: ugh, top of the page. I hate that.

Really disappointed with the lack of Virtual Console, as it suggests that Nintendo may possibly be just as slow with their releases with the new console if they can't even get something ready for launch.

And I know "haha typical Nintendo, why are we surprised?", but still. I am surprised. If a company isn't able to move forwards then it is effectively moving backwards.

I'll reserve judgement, but if we get to later in the year, and we've been seeing the same typical trickle of VC games...I'll probably just pick up a Switch second hand.

Personally think they're doing it to give the sales to all the indie devs rather than having customers spend their money on Super Mario 64 for the 4th time.

Gives the other devs a bit of breathing room for their titles to shine.

It seems like people willing to push the 'rushed' narrative will push that narrative regardless.

There's no way the browser/Netflix thing is due to lack of time; I sincerely doubt Nintendo would have launched with them even if they launched in November.

I mean, the system has to be rushed in some form or fashion because the payed online service won't be out till later and they had to axe the Wii U mid generation unlike the competition to create a brand new system. Even Switch's big release was going to be a Wii U title, but they acted soon enough to make sure it made it for Switch as well.

Something something soft launch. Something something early access console.

It's fascinating how every single time around they struggle to get their shit together with regard to basic features. I'll own one eventually (Mario perhaps?) but the decision to cancel my preorder is looking better and better for the time being. Horizon and especially Mass Effect will keep me plenty busy likely for months.

I think they're doing it so that users can't occupy themselves with cheap 5 to 10 dollar games. Especially not launch consumers who are thirsty for content and much more willing to spend.

Can't wait for them to say pay money to get your old titles on this new system. And that's best case, worst case is they will most likely drag their heels on even getting most of the VC titles ported over.

Indeed, I see it as either happening for that reason, or because they want to use the VC to fill out months without major Nintendo Switch titles.

I still foresee the big reveal and "games available right now" to take place during Nintendos E3 direct, and then June to get a lot of VC titles.

I fall somewhere in between honestly. I don't like the drip-feed approach as I don't really devote as much time to Virtual Console titles as I would a full games. They're something I'll buy instinctively and play when I have the time or desire to do so. I agree with you on the Netflix approach though, throwing out everything at once is a great way to ensure people don't finish or discover half of the games available.

Fast RMX at launch will increase its chances to have an active online community for few weeks.

I think Bomberman will get a bigger base though.

Also how does everyone saying "omg can't believe how incompetent such a basic feature" feel about the fact that this is pretty much standard for console launches?

I'm fine with this. I'll be too busy playing Zelda and Shovel Knight to care about playing VC on day one. I just want them to create new joy-cons to allow for d-pad and GameCube controls. Who knows, maybe they delay the VC so they can focus on their production of joy-cons for the launch and worry about VC joy-cons later. IMO, if they don't make specific VC joy-cons then they are leaving money on the table.

Well here we go again I suppose.

On the one hand they didn't have it ready for launch for 3DS or Wii U.

On the other hand it shows they still haven't got their shit together. No VC and no online? Doesn't give me a whole lot of hope for the future that they couldn't even get bare bones versions of those things together for launch.

I preordered one but as info was very scarce in February I cancelled. Hopefully by the time Mario is coming out in the fall things will be better.

Of course, but that gives them a lead-in of years, not months.

If Nintendo wanted it to, VC would launch with the system.
If Nintendo wanted it to, Netflix/browser would launch with the system.

These are deliberate choices that people may or may not agree with, but they have nothing to do with a 'rushed launch'.

Nintendo want to pad out for the rest of the year instead of front-loading everything, and I personally don't think that's indefensible.

It's a soft launch, folks. See Arlo's video on that.

Better they start getting market share right now so they have some decent install base by the holidays. Getting Switches in homes now primes the pump for dev interest sooner rather than later. Whatever 3rd party / indie support the Switch will end up getting, it'll be better the sooner they can move systems.

No online? What?

Well, launch just got much more interesting to me. Getting Zelda, Bomberman, Fast RMX and Shovel Knight.

Bummer about VC, but i hope they took their time to make it right.

Stop making excuses for them. VC is a core feature of Nintendo consoles and while it's not surprising it is disappointing that this console is launching with so little in the way of games and services. Just because launches are typically bad doesn't mean we can't be critical.

I would hope that there'd be an upgrade option for those who've bought Shovel Knight on Wii U and/or 3DS, but I know that won't be the case. Oh well, it's such a great game I'll probably buy it for a third time.

I might be alone, but I feel like Zelda, FAST, and Shovel Knight makes a pretty great launch. That's already two more games at launch than I thought I was going to pick up.

Didn't they say something about online not being at launch but slightly later? Probably in time for Mario Kart or something.
The system is launching with three games with online play. What's coming later is the app that has voice chat and friend matchmaking support.

That also seems like a fair estimate. Now the fun truly begins if the whole Wii/Wii U/3DS catalogue will be available out from the door, or if it's going to be another drip feed.
If you expect more than a drip feed you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

No they didn't. Online multiplayer is available at launch, but you have to pay for it come fall when some extra features get released. This very thread announced a game with prominent online features!

I hope that's the case. The other alternative is that the emulators just aren't ready, but when they are Nintendo will release a decent amount on to the store.

It's just...you know. Nintendo man, Nintendo.

I somehow have still never played Shovel Knight despite actually backing it on Kickstarter, so I think that'll be a great day 1 game to go with Zelda and 1, 2, Switch. I was hopeful for Snipperclipps but that'll come before long.

Not sure how anyone expected the VC to come at launch given we haven't heard anything about it and the console launches in 8 days.

Any chance at ALL that there's some concession for all five of us who bought these games on Wii U?

Didn't think so.

If you meant for RMX or SK, unfortunately it seems not.
If you meant for VC, Reggie's comments in a January interview indicated he knew of the demand for this and to stay tuned, and Eurogamer had a leak in November or so indicating there would be GCN VC and upgrade fees for VC, so it is possible we'll see some concessions like this for VC.

I'm probably in for Fast RMX, but wish it was physical instead. Already have Shovel Knight on 3ds so not feeling compelled to buy it for Switch.

It would be really stellar if this got a physical cart. I'm probably waiting on Switch till Christmas so I hold out a bit of hope.

I'm excited to play FAST RMX at 1080p 60fps. Shin'en are amazing with what they can do with Nintendo hardware.

The lack of VC is a mess however. I have tons of VC games and use the service a ton. Outright not being there at launch makes me think Nintendo will drip out releases again like the Wii U and 3DS VC. Sets a bad precedent for the future. Even worse is that the service will be actually needed to fill in the pretty sparse line up initially.

Arlo's video is a fan theory justifying the fact this is a rushed launch. Having bad first impressions to their core market by missing features and lacking games is not a good thing. This all just reeks of Wii U's launch tbh, seeing other fans defend this after the Wii U is disheartening.

No VC and no online?

The announcement in the OP says: "FAST RMX from Shin’en Multimedia: Challenge your friends to local split-screen competition or take part in online races against players from all over the world. This lightning-fast anti-gravity racer is exclusive to Nintendo Switch."

Ehhh, I'm OK with no VC at launch. I'd rather they put in work to make it good.

Although I suspect that Wii with component out will still remain the definitive VC experience. That godlike 240p, hot damn...
