Nintendo Switch Previews are coming in

Why do people care about the activity log?
I have about 20 hours in my Activity Log for 3DS. I use my Activity Log more than I've played entire games. I take it VERY seriously and love it so much.

Now it's the Virtual Console I have no interest in, but I know others do.

Hot damn! One of the guys from NWR (Nintendo World Report) has some fantastic news about the battery dying! Apparently if you let it go all the way down, the system kicks itself into sleep mode and saves your progress.

His accidental test allowed him to resume playing after 30 minutes between the battery dying and docking the console. That's fucking ace.

Sounds like this should be its own topic.

Character limit? Though he should have said that in the Tweet maybe.

I don't think the assertion he makes is unfair based on everything we've seen, it feels like Nintendo just aren't ready yet.

"Switch right now in one word: Undercooked. Sync issues. Bad lineup. No Media Apps." Is under 120 characters.

Switch isn't launching in 2013.

The Wii had VC and an Activity Log in 2006. Why weren't the next-generation PS4 and Xbox One compared to it?

We are getting different battery durations of the same game on standard settings. Weird.

Could it be that some batteries are damaged or aged in a bad way during storage?

If someone is involved in more combat, using more explosive arrows, bombs, constantly running and jumping, that would bring the battery down faster than someone taking their time slowly getting through the game.

I really like Jason, but apart from the worrying sync issues (which may be completely fixed in the day one patch), it's a tad nonsensical to call this undercooked.

No VC and activity log as a basis for such a negative statement? Come on bud.

Maybe his comments are also based on things he can't talk about yet?

fwiw, we already know the parental control app is going to have activity log features; if that's a serious concern for you all.

No trophies/My Nintendo (seemingly), no activity log, no VC, hardware issues, anemic launch lineup, no solidified online plans, press can't even get online with the console right now... I'd say he's not wrong tbh. The saving grace for this system at launch is Zelda. Without Zelda they could not put this system out in March.

Could be worrisome. Only thing keeping me calm is the fact that I did nott read a single report of this issue from any of the recent media or public events. Was literally thousands of people's accounts and none mentioned this issue. I am betting is a bug that was introduced in one off their final builds of the release OS that (now reported, possibly known) will get patched asap.

Just REALLY hope its not in any wany a bad batch of hardware

Also this. I read a ton of posts on Reddit and Other sites about the hands-on events and not once read about this problem before today

Same two reasons I keep a game journal... I won't remember what I played and when otherwise, and secondly it helps me controls the amount of gaming I do per week. "Oh shit I played 20 hours of Wii U this week, better tone it down some." etc etc.

The activity log on the 3ds was my favourite OS feature there. The one on the Wii U was less good but still used weekly by me, anyway.

Why do you need to know how many hours you've played? And why do you need to play less than 20 hours?

Same as the Vita or any laptop, right? You'd expect that from a modern portable.

Why do you need to know how many hours you've played? And why do you need to play less than 20 hours?

What? Why wouldn't you need to know these things? And surely you get that playing too much games in lieu of working, doing other hobbies, exercise... is bad for you? I can easily get addicted to games and let everything else fall by the wayside. So I have to restrict my gaming time. Harder to do that if I don't know what it is, or whether I've been gaming too much.

Come on, neither of the other two consoles had anything similar to the latter two at their launches. The synchronization issues are the only legitimate point he has here.

Yeah, it's oddly hyperbolic for him. He's usually very fair about this stuff.

Is 10K full of shit?

Yes
Yes, he is.

How surprising.

I disagree with this as well, so eh.

Online connectivity outside Wifi isn't coming until a patch "prior to launch" according to Nintendo. No eShop, no online, no Nintendo Account linking in our current review units.

Bright side: the Wifi with sign-in page issue? (The Switch currently can only sign into open or password-protected wifi because it has no web browser.) Nintendo confirmed the patch will have a fix for that.

"Ability to connect online using hotspots that require authentication, such as at a hotel or café. A web applet will open up so the user can sign-in or accept terms of use."
Someone quick. Let duckroll know about this.

That's great. Definitely a step up from 3DS and its sleep mode. I was expecting something like this since the Vita had it, but great that it's confirmed.

Good point. Forgot about the auto brightness that maybe some reviewers didn't turn off. That must be the case.

Well you're not really supposed to turn it off? I mean, it's useful to let it auto adjust.

That's a pretty cool feature not gonna lie.

What's your point?

Also Kotaku gave PS4 and XBO a "not yet" in their launch reviews, why Switch should be different?

Why does it take 30 minutes until he can resume gameplay?

Why do people care about the activity log?

I really enjoy having an easy way to see how long I spent with a game. Often times in-game trackers start and stop at certain points or just aren't reliable in general, if they are included at all.

It was a really neat feature imo. Much better than Steam too!

It's fun. Same reason it's fun to comb through trophy lists for no reason, same reason people keep journals.

Saying they had a better launch line-up or linking it to the tweet?
Switch is the best launch lineup Nintendo has had in a while. People forget how bad Wii U and 3DS were.

Why does it take 30 minutes until he can resume gameplay?
System died at 12:00, plugged in and charged at 12:30, resumed from saved spot at 12:31

So if you're on your bed and it dies and you wanna continue playing, you have to wait 30 minutes after you dock/plug it?

No, that's emphatically not what he said. He said his Switch ran out of battery, and when he put it into the dock after half an hour. He doesn't have to wait half an hour; he just did.

That's definitely not me.

I turn off auto brightness on all of my portable devices, I loathe the feature. Hate doing anything and then my display changes out of nowhere. The Vita having auto dim as a feature you can't turn off makes me loathe the hardware.

I also disable auto rotation on my phone for similar reasons.

Good thing that I have still have a Wii, Wii U and Classic NES to play Virtual Console games in the meantime.. if I need to go down that road. But, I'd rather play new games with a new console.

It seems you both misunderstood my wording. The battery died and 30 minutes elapsed before he could get it plugged back into the dock. It didn't take 30 minutes before the system turned on again.
