Edge #304 - The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild special

10/10 seems extremely generous for the Bayonetta games, and I say that as someone that liked them both. All just opinions though

What? These games are gameplay perfection. If they aren't 10/10 video games, I'm not sure what is. Edge got that completely right. Bayonetta 2 also won GotY 2014 on here despite being released solely on the least successful console. Just think about it. That's how good the game was.

Great list, but lol @ the bolded ones

I've not played Rock Band 3 but is the song selection outstanding? I guess an exceptional lineup warrents a game like Rock Band 3 getting a 10. Little Big Planet though for sure doesn't deserve a 10, it's fun to create but playing just isn't very good.

I will never understand Bayonetta and the love from its fans. I see no appeal in it from gameplay to setting. I probably wouldn't be a good reviewer for that title, as purchase guidance for people on the fence (no fences can be seen from my vantage point).

The free flowing combat and the stringing together of combos. Also trying to stay in the air for as long as you can while fighting is such bliss.

One thing with Bayonetta 1 & 2 is the high skill ceiling and the game accounts for that. It isn't particularly difficult to play. The level of mastery people can achieve with the game is phenomenal.

There's still plenty of time for games to be delayed into 2018.
Even if this happens, by the end of March we will have a plethora of incredible games. Horizon, Zelda, Nioh, Nier, Yakuza zero, Mass Effect Andromeda. As a Nintendo fan I still have Splatoon 2, Arms and Mario that I'm confident about for this year with a possibility of Xenoblade 2, although I'm confident it will be 2018.

The Bayonetta games are actually one of the few that deserve the 10.

They're gameplay perfection. The amazing presentation is a bonus.

Not really. I have bought a couple of Tekken's over the years but a couple of weeks is max time they keep my interest. Love Ninja Gaiden and Nioh though which have deep melee systems.

Now if you like Ninja Gaiden then you can also fall in love with Bayonetta. Very similar types of games. They've got their own combat system but you can approach both series in a similar fashion.

Tropical Freeze was robbed. That's a 10/10 game, while Bayonetta 2 is an 8/10.

WHAT? 10???

ARGHHHHHHHHH! The sky is falling!

Edge doesn't do free handouts with the 9s and 10s. this is a special month if they have a 10, two 9s and an 9.

Okay well the appeal of Bayonetta basically the same as stringing combos in fighting games. It's highly technical, and definitely not for everyone. If you're good enough at it, the whole thing feels like composing music with violence as your instrument. Bayonetta facilitates this better than any other game in existence.

I have not played Ninja Gaiden but I've heard it compared to Metal Gear Rising, which is completely different from Bayonetta and is more about timing and reflexes.

I get you though, because I personally enjoyed Metal Gear Rising more than Bayonetta, simply because I fucking suck at the latter lol.

Everything other than the gameplay is kind of mediocre though. I know that's the all important thing in a character action game but still

Nintendo really needs to port Bayonetta 1/2 to the Switch.

Great scores for Zelda, Horizon and Nioh. Drinks all round!

I love Ninja Gaiden and Nioh, but they don't even touch Bayonetta when it comes to combat depth and complexity

watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bKtePkxZe70

This game is insane and I was just replaying it few hours ago. Fucking timeless.

Tropical Freeze a 10? Not at all. Good enough game but nowhere near as fun as Super Mario 3D World was.

My fiance and I put 50+ hours into 3D World getting 100% and playing through it multiple times, it's an amazing game. Tropical Freeze a marvel in design though, every aspect of it is dripping with context and care. 3D World is a better multiplayer game but Tropical Freeze is a masterful platformer that stands high alongside Super Mario World and Donkey Kong Country 2.

But that's gameplay perfection.....nothing can really bet it.

I can understand it not getting a lot of 10s or any at all, as it not perfect in the overall package but saying that it's extremely generous to even get 10s is a whole other thing.

Definitely agree with you there, especially when it comes to the second one. Bayonetta 2 is close to my top 10 games of all time and I played it through three times in a row when it was first released. The gameplay is such a smooth perfection. Bayonetta 2 is also the fourth best reviewed game on Wii U with 91.

Buying this so hard on Thursday, just to make the last 12 hours all the more hype.

Would love to see more photos of the cover, since the shop version will be covered in text.

If Bayonetta 2 isn't a 10 what is. That game is perfect.

I agree that it plays incredibly well, but there are definite weaknesses. That's the thing with awarding a 10... Are you looking for something that is great in all aspects, or something that really delivers in certain ways? Some of the most immaculately designed games have given me less joy than something that really scratches the itch with obvious flaws.

I find it hard to grapple with this though. Somewhat depressingly, I don't think I've played a single game I would give a 10 this generation. Even Dark Souls which I love I have difficulty justifying as a 10 because of obvious flaws... My heart says yes but my brain says no.

The last games I've played that I'd have no qualms about giving 10 would be Geometry Wars 2 and Super Meat Boy.

I must admit I put a lot of weight in a 'grounded' atmosphere (which still includes ridiculous stuff like robo-dinos and sci-fi battles with swords mind you). I guess Bayonetta was just a couple of steps too far.

It doesn't need to be. All you need is a space large enough for that combat to shine and shine it does.

But then you can't see what the fuck you're doing half of the time with so much filling up the screen. There's also the wildly inconsistent frame rate, and Platinum's patented shitty environmental art/design sort of lets down the action. Let's not even get started on the laughable story, plot, and characters; they're bad enough to even slightly detract from the experience. The games score highly with me purely due to the combat and ridiculous boss fights.

Interestingly, I played Metal Gear Rising before Bayonetta and got used to the "parry" move in that. So once I started playing Bayonetta I used the 'Moon of Mahaa-Kalaa' as soon as I could.

The depth of a 10 / 10 needs to be discussed I think. I strongly disagree that skyward sword or The last of us or super mario galaxy 2 are 10/10s, but if certain games strike people right I can see how publications go the 10 route. And when I put them on a spectrum, the last of us is far closer to 10 than skyward sword, but super mario galaxy 2 takes a swing at a 10 that is similar to the last of us. So we will see where botw sits. Great scores from a fairly tight publication.

All this Bayonetta talk reminds me that Platinum has at least one unnamed project for Switch

I think it's Bayonetta 3

Just a hunch

I think Bayonetta 1 & 2 need to be re-re-released and re-released on the Switch. And as early as possible so that people have the full lifetime generation of the Switch to appreciate their beautiful combat systems.

What we need is a Bayonetta trilogy collection similar to what Bayonetta 2 had:

Hadn't much doubt about Zelda's score, but was full expecting a 7 for Horizon so really excited about that now.

TOO MANY GAMES!!

I'm not going to lie, that Skyward Sword review really taints my brief excitement about the 10, sins that was a 7/10 at best game for me, but flip it's getting hard to not get hyped about BotW!

I just really hope they don't phone in the story and characters. Zelda is usually better than the dreck most Nintendo games pass off as story, but it's still usually barely there and more functional than engaging.

It's so frustrating trying to both avoid spoilers and get a handle on whether the writing is good enough with this game. Gameplay mechanics are obviously going to be top notch, but for me, that's only half the equation, while there's plenty out there that will give a game a perfect score just for the former inspite of the later being utter toss, especially when it comes to Nintendo games.

Without being able to really read the review, even if I had them magazine, this singular perfect score is just teasing me with the possibility of both joy and disappointment.

The embargo ending, and both a decent sample size of scores and spoiler free summaries of pluses and minuses really can't come soon enough basically.
