Ghost Recon : Wildlands Open Beta Impressions.

Had a great time infiltrating the Unidad base last night with my friend. Great team work and coordination. Very satisfying as we reached our target without being spotted, taking it in turns to guide each other to different places in the base. Scratched that Splinter Cell itch.

Tried the open beta and like others have said the driving is truly awful in this game. Did a mission where I had to drive a sports car and I kept wrecking it lol. AI is also pretty dumb. Example would be me landing my helicopter right in the middle of the enemy base and was promptly ignored. This game is not looking good at all.
Are you sure your heli wasn't from the same enemy faction? They ignore you if you're driving a familiar vehicle but I'm not sure about helicopters. It's one way to gain entry to bases.

That mission was weird for me. While circling the base wall to get to the unguarded rear entrance my ai squad was teleported inside and simply walked through the entire base to get back to me. Didn't trigger any alarms of course.

Is there any way to get a actual sniper scope in the beta?
All the sniper rifles I've acquired (3 total) came with descent scopes - weapon parts I've encountered nothing specifically for sniper rifles (found all but one in the beta)

The only part is the default ACOG, unfortunately. IIRC the MSR the UNIDAD snipers have has a better one— and since you can put a can on any of the snipers you find there's no reason not to use a looted one.

how the fuck is the whole base aware of your presence when you kill an enemy a second after he spots you? also co op sessions are never stealthy.. ill pass on purchasing it.

After some time to think about it (I might do one more co-op session), this game feels pretty typical, but does a couple things I've always wanted to see sandbox shooters do. It's one of those things where I hope somebody else comes along and tackles the same ideas with more polish, maybe even Ubisoft itself further down the line in Far Cry 5 or something.

That's funny though because it's exactly how I feel playing Arma: really cool and very ambitious ideas but executed in an extremely janky way. The Wildlands beta feels like another step towards that dream -- some of the same ideas with a bit more polish and a lot less jank, but doesn't make it all the way there.

Completed all the missions in the open beta on extreme. I think this will be a great game with the full map and all the missions available to you.

I enjoyed the additional challenge in the second region as the enemy bases were much harder to assault. You have to stop and think more often because of the alarm systems and jammers. The enemy reinforcements are really tough so you want to avoid detection.

Also in my opinion the game looks great on Xbox One and the long draw distance for enemies and vehicles is an achievement on it's own. I could play the game on my PC on which it would look much nicer but I don't really feel like I have to.

I also liked the controls after I got used to them, I think the cover system in Wildlands is more natural than being locked into a separate cover mode. I am not big fan of the games where you go from cover to cover.

There is still some weird stuff like the AI teammates seeing the enemies who are inside locked down communications array building. I don't like how the rebel support options appear from a thin air. The rebel options are cool idea but the execution is lazy.

Anyways, I think I will put many hours into the full game. It is sort of a game I have been waiting for a long time.

I had the opposite experience. A courtesy 1-3 seconds when being spotted, even On Extreme. No alert until they fire a shot.

The other night i popped three guys in a row right next to each other. They saw each other go down but the second between each shot was enough time to keep tagging.

PS in co-op you can be stealthy while the team mates go ham. Gives it a really badass "war time infiltration" vibe not unlike MGS4.

I did not see anything like that. Did you land into the rebel base? ;)

At least when playing on the extreme difficultly level your helicopter gets noticed and shot at if you are hovering over the enemy base. Even if you drive into the base using a car belonging to the same faction the enemies seem to notice you (although the gates will still open for you). In some areas, you might get shot down by SAM missile.

How do you fly the Plane...I tried the mission to steal one 2 times...my first attempt I couldn't get it to move much and at some point it blew up lol, mission failed. The second time I managed to kill everyone and saw the ramp so I started on that, got airborne but after that, slowly fell on some rocks,it was stuck, could'nt ride it anymore so I blew it up...side mission failed :p

I did manage the big main mission, the one with the 2 El something couple,it was fun.

You always have 2 - 3 second window to kill an enemy who is about to spot you. If you fail to do that, then the enemies are going to be alerted. I think it is a fair system, otherwise it would be fairly easy to clean out the enemy base.

It is difficult to enforce stealth playstyle if you are playing with bunch of randoms. My only game with randoms ended when someone crashed a car into a petrol tank destroying the helicopter we were supposed to steal.

Got a solid chance to play this all weekend.

After the closed beta, I went from Hyped to skipping completely.

After the open beta with friends, I went from skipping to maybe buying it.
After completing all the Beta, it's either a buy if my friends get it, or a wait til it's cheap if I go solo.

I couldn't seem to match make with decent people. No one used mics, so it would end up a cluster fuck.

The only real gripe I had, was the terribly inconsistent friendly AI. I would watch them take out bases undetected while I sniped and directed them, or they'd clumsily run past groups of enemies they I had to take on by myself because my team was focused on someone 500m the other direction.

I got used to driving vehicles and mastered the Helo, so those weren't a gripe for me, but the rush of sneaking up to a base, planning it out, and then executing it perfectly hooked me.

I agree with all the complaints, however I still had some fun. Some thoughts I had were (PS4 Pro):

Controls - Gunplay and character movement wasn't as tight as I had imagined it would be. There was a weird a acceleration or something to the aiming that made it feel off. However, I cranked up the sensitivity to 55 from default 30 and I think it helped a lot. After a little while I did seem to adjust to the aiming and foot controls enough so that they seemed fine.

However yeah, driving is kinda wonky but I guess serviceable. But flying is completely whack. I don't even know how they came up with the control scheme for the choppers. If you need to do anything other then go straight up and then fly in a line forget about it. Hilarious they put guns on some of them, they couldn't be more useless as its impossible to accurately point at anything.

AI - Weirdly inconsistent. Enemies would go from being oblivious that I was blowing the brains out of people around them... to hive mind swarm the second I was spotted. But then sometimes... it was completely fine and reacted in reasonable ways. Same for my teammates. Sometimes they would clear a village with ease, taking cover... leapfrogging each other, headshotting enemies to the point I wasn't even needed. Next engagement they would literally just stand around me in a semi circle and let a bad guy run right through them and shoot me in the back of the head. Then try to heal me while the baddie was still standing there shooting us point blank. Coop matchmaking though eliminates this.

The guns and customization were awesome though, I had a good time building my operator and the gunsmith workshop looks like its gonna be sweet.

I really enjoyed the scenery and atmosphere too, I thought the landscapes were gorgeous.

Overall though, theres still something inherently fun about a special forces open world romp and just going around wrecking havoc on the cartel. Theres not many other games like this that I can think of available right now. I joined a public game with 3 other randoms who were all very cool and we played the entire demo from start to finish, both regions, and it was freakin blast despite the shortcomings of some of the individual components. Rolling around in beat up trucks with gatling guns in the bed running convoys off the road etc was pretty awesome. Parachuting into bases and going stealth as long as we could and then busting out in big running gunfights was awesome. One thing I really liked was the lethality of both you and the enemy (played on 3rd difficulty. Above normal but not the hardest). No real bullet sponges. And the fact that you can get cut down pretty quick ups the ante on engagements a little. You gotta stay very aware.

I have a feeling this will be one of those games I get and really enjoy, despite acknowledgement of some jank that shouldn't be there.

I have a huge gripe with the game, and it's that turning off the HUD makes the game near unplayable. I turned off the HUD options and the first person I interrogated just sat there. Hm. Try again. Still nothing. Is the game bugged? Restart. Nothing. Turn on HUD. Oh, I guess turning off the HUD turns off any information that you might, you know, actually need to go through the game. Smart. Also pretty annoying that I can't know how many bullets I still have if I turn the ammo HUD off. Do I have any spare sniper rifle rounds? Hell if I know.

Even though they have HUD element options, it all seems so useless. Ideally I would be able to turn off enemy marking, but still be able to sync shots. Ideally I would be able to hide magazine information, but still know that I have spare mags. I want to hide as much information as possible, but still be able to play the game.

Overall though, I'm having fun. Vehicles suck (helicopter especially), but the core mechanic of sneaking around and shooting bad guys is great. I'll probably pick this one up on sale down the line.

I wanted to like this game, because I love a setting in South America. But this is not going to cut it for various reasons :-(. Canceled the pre-order.

You can get 4.5-5.5x variable mag scoped rifles off of enemies. Doesn't unlock them for you but you can use the one you pick up until you die/leave the game. Haven't seen an 8x, much less 12x anywhere.

In the first area the snipers at the Unidad FOB are your best bet.

I've finally figured out what they're trying to do with the helicopter controls. Still don't like it but I don't spend the first minute porpoising trying to get airspeed.

Can you change the difficulty once playing? I was on normal (whats above that, just extreme?) and found it a bit too easy. Id check but I needed the hdd space. Thanks!

Enjoyed the alpha again, but still don't think I'm jumping in at launch. Played more or less solo the whole time.

The only mission I have had trouble with is the one to protect the radio transmitter in the second zone. Holy shit that's just designed awfully, three groups of enemies spawn around this little speck of town in the middle of nothing and then you get multiple cars AND at least two helicopters?? I can't come close to completing it, the best I could do is make it to about 30 seconds, and that's with starting with a minigun-equipped vehicle in the town square. Even with that (which at least makes the choppers doable) a few hand grenades will kill me in such a way that even if my squad revives I can't possibly get out of the vehicle before the next grenade goes off.

Dang you got bad luck. I was on hard mode and only two enemy cars spawned.

Yeah I'm on hard as well. At least once I'm pretty sure it was just bad luck as I had Unidad send a car too, which can't be normal because it never happened the other failed attempts. Perhaps because I killed a couple of troops in town before I started and had triggered a patrol or something? Very annoying regardless, especially the constanty spawning enemies all over.

Still, a half dozen huge failures was enough for me. I was also unable to get that resource convoy with the helicopter but I only tried twice - lol I did actually kill the convoy but I was ran over by a Sicario car and killed before I was able to tag the burning wreck. Didn't feel like trying again as I had pretty much cleared the map and helicopters were too much of a pain with my stealth and sniper rifle loadout.

Anyone else uninstall it already? I made it to the second region, realized it was just recycling the same old bullshit, and gave up. This game is going to bomb so hard.

This game has potential but the controls are ridiculous for vehicles. I don't know who thought they were good and kept them in at this point. Guns on helicopters is pointless because of how bad they control. It a struggle just to stay in the air. There's alot of great ideas with missions and tactics and the environment but it all feels like it needs more polish. I had some good times with this in coop so I will pick it up if they fix some of these issues.

I enjoy this beta. Shooting is really fun, it looks awesome, map is diverse and really big.
Coop in this thing is great. I like the amount of weapons, gear and customization.
Sure driving could be better but I don't really have too much problem with it. It is definitely better than in Watch Dogs but nowhere close to GTA IV though.
I thought it won't be too good after watching some gameplay trailers but after beta I think I will be there day one :)

Yeah, that is by far the most difficult mission. Took us a couple tries before we could beat it on extreme.

Try making roadblocks with the vehicles, (drive one up, use the one there, and call in a third). Then place mines on the roads ahead of time. Lastly equip an under-barrel grenade launcher to take out the chopper.

That's how I managed to beat it.

I didn't hate the beta/game. I just don't think in need it now. Also I found that I'd rather just play far cry tbh.

I don't think it's going to bomb. It's a co-op multiplayer shooter coming out in March. It'll sell by default. Maybe not amazingly but UBI knows what it was doing launching it now

Yeah, same regarding heli controls.

With KB+M

-Shift to ascend
-Shift+down arrow to ascend while moving forward
-Shift+up arrow to descend while moving forward
-Ctrl to descend

Its weird as fuck.

So I jumped back in to test a few more things out.

Looks like there is indeed a last known position system, and it does have some cheese, just not as much as I thought. Was playing solo and nestled up on a rock overlooking a small base. I fired a shot of the long rifle, and purposefully missed a guard by a few feet and then shuffled back out of view. They switched into investigation mode, but said that I was out of range and so sent out a vehicle patrol - at this point they knew my position but hadn't actually gotten a visual. So I was able to shuffle away to a different position - the patrol rushed my former location and stayed there for a while looking until they called back in to say that they couldn't find anything.

After a few minutes I took another shot, taking out an explosive target and hid. They sent out another patrol, but just around the entrance to the base. An allied AI even said "hey, those idiots are looking in the wrong place".

So I guess there is a general last known position in effect, and it can be incorrect at times - maybe if you skedaddle to extreme range from your target.

Also tried the helicopter controls again, trying to get a handle on the two modes - hover and flight. Managed to get my AI to assault a supply raid target - the one where you have to steal a helicopter with medical equipment - the pilot got inside and took off and I followed in the helo. Had them assault again when we were in flight, which took out the pilot and left the medical helo hovering 50 meters off the ground with nobody inside and no way to get into it. That was... weird.

All things considered, playing this second beta solo and in two player co-op I'm content with waiting to see how or if this game gets patched after release. Its missing far too much obvious polish for an early buy.

Quick note about KB+M heli controls, here's how I think you're supposed to use them.

  • Hold throttle (shift) to get a bit of height
  • Continue holding throttle (shift) while pressing and holding 'W'
  • As soon as your helicopter starts to lose altitude, release 'W' but continue holding throttle (shift)
  • You will now be cruising at full speed while maintaining a steady altitude
  • At this point you can press/tap WASD to gain/lose altitude, turn left/right (remember to continue holding down the throttle!)
  • Release throttle (shift) when you want to land, make sharp turns etc.
P.S. While this allowed me to fly Helicopters pretty well, I make no defence for the jank controls. They suck

So the game doesn't do anything well?
It looks nice, runs well (on PS4 Pro anyway), and has some solid weapon customization.

Everything else is undercooked but salvageable with enough time. Like another six months to a year.

AI and vehicles need an overhaul, and there is way too much jank for a game releasing in less than two weeks.

Enjoying the game one PC. Its basically GTA with 4 player co op set in a south american Tom Clancy novel. WORD

But myself and pretty much everyone I know has 100% CPU usage during the whole game no matter what you try.. I mean, literally everything. So Ubisoft needs to tune the final game and I'm there for months and months.

edit. Driving was 100% fine for me on PC. Some vehicles were squirely, others not. I made adjustments because they would be different in real life and I was ok. Sorry for not joining the party.

Why do you care so much?

Its a thread on a game. I played the game. I commented.

You seem to be suggesting people shouldnt be commenting on things they dislike? Wow, people should know this is a bad product and not to waste their money.
