Famitsu review scores (3/1/17) - Zelda: Breath of the Wild gets perfect score (40/40)

I think it's partly tied to Japanese culture that's heavily geared towards consensus and group think. The whole reason Famitsu has this four reviewer system is probably because of this, and they're unlikely to have dissenting opinions on anything. I wonder how often Famitsu has scores where reviewers diverge by more than one point...

Yeah, its disappointing they squander the opportunity to have a reliable review system.

Come off it. Brand name is what most games ride off of. That goes for any industry.

There are a lot of "good" games that won't average a 90+ metacritic and get awarded automatic 10s.

Edit: It's looks like a good game but going to reviews on Zelda won't give you any answers. Every Zelda is a "masterpiece"

Keep telling yourselves that, kids.

Weird how that magic auto-review zelda bonus didn't work on Tetras Treasure Trackers, Links Crossbow Training or Hyrule Warriors though. 🤔

And they were pretty bang on the money imho :p

Nah.

Weakest 3D Zelda by far, overly long, terrible overworld, annoying partner with Fi and constant recalibrating of the WIi Mote makes it no bueno.

I mean, I enjoyed Nintendogs when it came out back in like 2005, but was it really a 40/40 caliber kind of game?

Well it sold an absolute goddamn fuckton of copies and is arguably the reason DS sales took off, so if Famitsu can be considered a buyers guide for software people will enjoy... yes?

Given how utterly meaningless Famitsu scores are these days, why is it the one magazine that I keep seeing threads made for about their reviews?

It's not that I mind the thread being made, I just don't understand why anyone cares about famitsu, like at all. They have no credibility when it comes to their reviews

Famitsu scores mean nothing. Wasn't there a article that came out years ago saying how the critics were corrupt? That they accepted money from publishers to boost scores or some shit?

In any case, whether or not this is true, the scores still don't mean much.

The bold one I think most would agree with, but the rest was no problem for me and others and Skyward has many highs that you failed to mention which are the reason why it scored so well not only at Famitsu but the majority of other outlets as well.

Calibrating the Wii remote took a precious second of pressing a button.

In a world where the DS Zelda's exist that is a load of bollocks.
Also u must have had some issues with your seup, never had to do much recalibrating here personally.

You smell like a genius. I'm going to open a review site just for you. I'll wait until software sale numbers are announced and then just give high scores to the games that sell well, and low scores to the games that don't. It'll make it super easy for you to know what games to buy. Sneak peek at the first issue:

Candy Crush - 10/10/10/10
Beyond Good and Evil - 4/5/4/4
Call of Duty: Whichever - 10/10/10/9
God Hand - 3/3/3/4

What's the reason people are going to dismiss all the high scores tomorrow? I'm genuinely curious!

My current personal favourite is - "Well it's a Zelda game, what do you expect!?"

I'd imagine all the high/perfect scores Skyward Sword got back in 2011 burned a lot of people.

Mine is pretty and pink
I don't particularly trust in famitsu reviews and scores but so far every thread about good zelda botw reviews has been full of "x gave game y a 10 so I don't care about their reviews" and it is extremly annoying and makes no sense.

*Looks through the list* Ah, so a perfect score from Famitsu is meaningless. Got it.

I'm still hyped AF for this game, even though I'll have no way to play it any time soon.

I'm not saying sales = quality.
Damn, GAF fucking hate games not aimed at them, huh?

Oh shit, Nintendo getting serious paying Famitsu for a 40. At least we know it will be quality like Jojo All Star battle.

Super Bomberman R (NSW) – 8/7/8/7
You cheap fucks Konami. Could have at the very least paid for a 35.

In all seriousness though, why is anyone here pretending Famitsu reviews are legitimate?

There reviews are 1-2 paragraphs of basically nothing, and scores are based on the overall importance of the game in regards to the Japanese industry. People dismissing this isn't because they are trying to deny Zelda is good, just that Famitsu really is no indication at all of what review score a game will get (even though BoTW will still review super well). There was even a blog a year or so a go from a guy who used to work for one of the Japanese magazines (was it Famitsu or Dengeki?) and all of the content in these printed video games magazines in Japan first must get approval from the video game publishers in Japan before they are officially published, so lol.

It's interesting how in every other famitsu review thread it's generally accepted that famitsu's reviews are essentially meaningless but when it's brought up in this thread you're just salty 🤔

Demon's Souls 29/40 lol

Yeah can't take Famitsu really serious. The fact that only 2 "western" games got a 40 also makes them look a bit biased. I kind of have the feeling at long as it is a Japanese game it gets decent scores, the last FFs also got way too high scores.
Nice for Zelda though, won't be the last "perfect" score I guess.

OMG Japanese people like different things than Western gamers

How can it be? There surely isn't any cultural differences...

I don't really like Western/US way of bashing everything that doesn't fit one's narrative. Bunch of sheep tits, flapping around like impotent dicks in a US senate meeting.

Maybe, just maybe people who read Famitsu are accustomed to it's way of rating games and can read it critically?

Seriously, there is A LOT of different people in the world and their tastes vary equally much. You can think different from other people, but only an utter cunt thinks that his or her opinion about something so un-meaningful as a game is better than others. And the proceeds to shit all over the other opinions in the Internet. You guys must have a fedora, right?

Don't trust much Famitsu, but 10/10 from Edge is huge, so I'm pretty confident this will be a great Zelda episode. Can't wait!

Dismissing famitsu is not the same as real outlets

What's your reason going to be for dismissing the first 4/5 it gets from any outlet?

There is nothing inherently wrong with this game getting a perfect score but Famitsu isn't the hill you wanna die on to argue that guys. Not only are their scores meaningless, their reviews are also often bizarre, petty or lacking in any sort of nuance. They're a uniquely Japanese outlet whose reviews aren't meant to be considered like how we generally consider reviews. It's more akin to those "teens react to zelda" type videos in their content.

I would say it was a 10/10 game given what it wanted to achieve, the same way I'd give angry birds a 10/10 if I was to score it

I'm not defending Famitsu as they aren't the most reliable, but I can see why someone would give it top scores
