Rumor: PS4 dropping price to 199 tomorrow to counter Switch launch in some EU stores

For everyone who took an L because they didn't pre order their respective Switch, we have a PS4 for the low low. Great move. Why isn't Micorsoft getting in on this action?

Everyone who wants Zelda is going to get Zelda regardless, but for everyone else Sony just had a ton of critically acclaim PS4 console exclusives on their platform this first quarter.

Gravity Rush 2, Berseria, Digimon, KH 2.8, Yazuka 0, Nioh, Horizon, and soon Nier and Persona 5.

There's no better time to get a PS4.

Cause even that wouldn't help them in the EU. It would in the UK though. Maybe MS is just waiting to do it on friday itself

It is very likely that Horizon will sell way more than Zelda.

On an install base of 60 million with great reviews, youtuber praise and a massive marketing campaign... I don't see why anyone would think otherwise other than fanboyism.

I cant believe that consoles being at these low prices are not able to sell much much more on the casual market. PS4 at 199 or Xbox One at 249 are a complete steal.

As someone who just got a PS4 and was damn cautious about that purchase after not liking the PS3, I find this completely true. I think I got it at the right time. (As in, I don't think it'd have done much for me before and it is doing much for me now. Good releases last fall, this winter and spring with respect to my tastes.)

....

As to the issue at hand: this is clearly in response to the Switch and the "lolswitch fail, Sony has no need to compete" early in the thread is embarrassing. Unlike fans on the internet, Sony isn't going to just be sitting on its laurels and assuming Switch is nothing to it until such has proven to be the case.

The move in question is direct. It's obvious. Moreover, it capitalizes on Switch hype/buzz for consoles in the case where Switch's aren't found or where someone goes into a game store and finds competing deals/gets the common sense talk that older, cheaper consoles with more games and games coming is a safer buy.

Nothing wrong with competition.

Sony know that if they take out Nintendo this time around, they will get to snap up all their IPs. I'm sure we'll see BotW 4k on the PS5.

Comedy gold.

I see Scorpio being a larger competitor for Sony than Nintendo this year. It's definitely a smart business move for Sony..

If people this is reactionary, wait until the Scorpio launches. I'm expecting a price drop of $100 USD.

Just another case of Sony being reactive to Nintendo that people will just handwave as something they were going to do anyways.

As a matter of fact, I feel a little bad for Horizon now.

We'll see. The timing is a bit suspect I admit. As for HZD, don't be. It will do just fine. I just hope no one is expecting BotW numbers for it.

Well Nintendo titles do have longer legs than most AAA titles on other platforms, also Japan being Zelda>Horizon is a lock.

While I think that Horizon will be bigger out of the gate (and well deserved, it is clearly a fantastic game), I don't think it is pure fanboyism to think that Zelda might sell better in the long run. It really depends on how well the Switch does as a platform. If Switch sells well, Zelda is a game to get and with the high review scores it is unlikely there will be anything higher rated on the Switch for some time (if ever). However, if Switch tanks, it brings Zelda with it, WiiU sales aren't going to make up that difference.

But yeah. It will be exciting to see the final results. I hope they both break sales records so we get more games of their type.

It's a great time to be gaming.

It's almost as if Sony are doing this to capitalise on increased footfall in stores due to the Switch launch.

Some of the replies are genuinely tragic though. Is this what Nintendo fans on Gaf are like if they think there's a chance of success?

Is it Sony? I thought the German retailer Mediamarket(?) are renown for this kind of aggressive pricing.

On the other note, I'm glad Nintendo's back in the fight, love me some "war talk"!

Not sure how it's sleazy when Nintendo are kings of artificially creating scarcity for business reasons. If another company wants to swoop in and capitalize on that hubris, more power to them.

Why do people keep spreading this factually incorrect rumor, they arent creating artificial scarcity, they're just, you know, selling out.

Ah yes, the master business tactic of intentionally not selling your product. Brilliant.

They did here in Australia, got in with some good bundles similar to Christmas pricing.
Sony did some minor price drops but are actually more expensive than the X1S here despite outselling Xbox comfortably.

Zelda will be the default game to buy for majority of Switch hardware sold for a while though. If Nintendo can sold 10 million hardware for year 1, that's probably zelda sold for almost the same amount.

I can see Zelda sell more than Horizon in the long run. It will probably be default switch bundle for holiday too. While Horizon will have to compete with many other PS4 bundle

Exactly. Seems like they're fearing the Switch for them to do so.

Actually it's just an opportunity to sell some more hardware during a consumerist fever window which a competitor paid for via their own marketing budget. Emotion is not the driver of business decision, regardless of how much people want to humanize corporations.

I don't get people complaining about this.

This is good marketing, it makes a lot of sense strategically. Sony is not trying to stop people from buying a Switch, but some people might feel like dropping an extra 200/250€ (for a PS4 + Horizon) and get a killer deal.

This - it's not a zero sum game where Sony wants to "win" by compressing Switch sales, it's just an open window where people are excited about buying games and some of those people might impulse buy another system if the price is also significantly reduced. Console wars are only real on the internet.

Oh, OK. Seems like they're going for the kill, then.

I can see the value in something like this. You can get a PlayStation 4 for $100 less. If you're walking into a store with a budget for a Switch and a couple of games, then maybe Sony'll convert some of those people into PlayStation 4 buyers, instead, maybe ending up with a pretty decent attach rate right out of the gate. That said, I really only want a PlayStation 4 for Deception IV: The Nightmare Princess, so I'll still probably hold out for a deal on that and maybe a PlayStation 4 Pro.

Actually it's only a few shops, not Sony. amazon is not putting this even. I would bite this but can't find any offer near.

Edit:

Amazon offer is now up:
Ps4 500go + 2nd DS + 3months ps+ for 249€

Some shops even add The Division for the same price.

I'm falling for this! Thanks to my vita, i will switch to hybrid gaming :)

First month? For sure.
Six months in? Not so sure.
End of year? I doubt it.

Quite true about the zero sum game.
They're still competitors,though.

What exactly are you expecting it to sell? Zelda games sell within the region of 4-5m these days. For a big budget new IP with such high praise and marketing, on a console with a massive install base, I don't know why Horizon can't do those kinds of numbers. Some of you seem to think Zelda is in the same sales bracket as a Mario or Pokémon game.

Surprised to see Finland being part of this deal, usually we never get discounts this good. Basically half the price of Switch over here.

The NES Classic.

They've sold over a million units. They aren't creating artificial scarcity. They aren't going to make 5 million units off the bat. Terrible business sense to do that.

You never know how an item is going to sell. You do your best and hope you didn't make too many or too few.

Artificially creating a scarcity is dumb and people who think a company would actually do that lack business sense

This. It's even better when you have a PC. :)

Yeah despite saying I would buy just one console, I have them all now along with my pc. It's an amazing time to be a gamer and 2017 seems like it could be the best yet. Hopefully the PS4 pro will drop in price around Scorpio launch.
