Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch) sold 193k at retail in Japan (Famitsu numbers)

Do games usually have a bigger debut in Japan than the UK? I remember someone saying in a thread yesterday games doing over 100k in the UK is very good. So for a smaller country 193k for Zelda sounds amazing. But apparently it isn't as good as I thought.

Lower than I anticipated honestly. It's an ok launch number but I wouldn't call it great

I realize Zelda has never been as strong in Japan as in the West but given the few amount of titles available Day 1 for Switch I just anticipated a better attach rate

We haven't still past a week.
It's retail only.
There aren't enough switches.
Switch is not cheap

I bought Zelda digitally, crazy how that works... I'd expect at least an 80% attach rate if they actually included digital sales, although the Japanese release of the Switch does include allot more titles than the US launch...

Lower than I would've expected given the dearth of software on the platform, but Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword didn't really do well (especially Skyward Sword) and Zelda seems on a downward trend in Japan after the spike from PH and ST.

It'll be interesting to see how much was actually digital when it's all said in done.

Wii launch:
Wii - 371,936
TP - 145,068 (39% attach rate)

Switch launch:
Switch - 330,637
BotW - 193,060 (58% attach rate)
Of course, the big difference here can be explained by the Wii having a massively popular pack-in game in Wii Sports. All the Switch has is 1,2 Switch... For 50 more dollars. LOL

Edit: Oh, forgot Wii sports wasn't a pack-in in Japan. Which just goes to show it was a good enough game that people wanted to buy it separately.

Zelda did fine. Better than TP/SS, but I admit I expected better from Japan too.
Switch, on the other hand, is off to a good start, like everywhere else in the world it seems.

Zelda's recent performance in Japan is nothing short of puzzling. Apparently people would rather play OoT and MM again on 3DS than play something new.

Both Wii Spots and Wii Play outsold TP at the Wii launch. Nintendo had 3 big titles. It's never happening again at their new productivity levels.

Zelda is dead in Japan. So much for 1 million LTD that some users hoped in Mediacreate. It also shows that Comgent shouldn't be used to extrapolate sales figures.

It will be interesting to see the sales of the other Switch games. Probably 1-2-Switch sold very well.

I know they game a lot on handhelds but I heard consoles are practically dead there. I can't imagine big 3rd party games doing the second best in Japan in relation to the rest of the world.
PS4 is keeping the dream alive (barely). Switch is pretty much the new handheld in japan while its the new console/handheld here in the U.S

At launch? Happens all the time. You have to keep in mind that people usually think US + JP + EU, but that's not how territories are divided. There are tons of countries - US, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Australia, not to mention the growing markets in SE Asia, China, Taiwan, South Korea, etc. It all adds up. Also, we're not talking about lifetime sales but LAUNCH sales. Japan has huge launches comparatively because their market is extremely front loaded.

Other than TP and Botw no other Zelda games were launch titles. That is kind of important to note.

I guess the original Zelda was launch window for the Famicom Disk System but that was not a new platform, just an add-on.
