Middle-earth: Shadow of War: First Gameplay Video

Looks almost too good to be true. That's 2017 for ya though lol

It also looks like they had some debug stuff enabled like unlimited executions. Maybe the core combat systems were not ready.

I don't know. 2017 so far for me has been "looks almost too good to be true" then reviews come out and "oh, it was true. The game is amazing."

So it seems you will mostly be conquering these fortresses and it looks damn cool and full of action here but how many fortresses until it becomes same old, same old? That's what i wonder.

Hopefully people realize the execution prompt is on the entire time making every kill 1 hit. I'm assuming they did that for speed purposes.

This kinda looks like Total War -game, but instead of being RTS, it's ARPG combat.

Demo looked very scripted, despite claiming at every point it's "dynamic". Hopefully that was just for demo.

I like improvements they made, but sadly combat still feels very same to previous game.
This really needs more tactical combat.

Looks interesting but the first one was good for a few hours then everything was the same, was just a grind and I never finished it.

I hope the stealth is upped because that was legitimately the only challenge.

One of the big questions in that regard is how exactly you build up to a siege like that. If that's the standard action of the game, then yeah that's really gonna get old quick. If it's more the final cap after several efforts to gather resources, intel, etc, then it should have at least some variety to it.

Just skipped some minutes but just looking at the graphics it seems identical to the first one. Will watch the whole gameplay later but I judging from your comments it seems like a big improvement gameplay wise, especially in regard to the already great Nemesis system.

When I saw that you had followers and commanded an army I started to secretly wish it had some RTS elements in the vein of Kingdom Under Fire, but it doesn't seem to have even light commands. Your army seems to be there just for show.

It's more about using the named characters for specific gameplay instances and resource gathering. Oh well.

Who needs an Orc army when the player is basically God? Just didn't really get a sense of the army amounting to anything beyond theatrics in that video.
How I felt. All the one hit kills, and boss fight that was basically a fancy easy QTE. Reminds me of why I thought the original games gameplay was shallow. A lot of great looking animations but I hope they create encounters that feel actually challenging because the first game was piss easy to me.

Your arrows don't deplete either. In addition to having stuff like that it was probably very scripted to show off "what can happen" while playing.

The flow of gameplay looks really really annoying. Hopefully it's just for demo/preview purposes, but it looks like there's a slow-motion cutscene interruption every 10 seconds or something.

If they can keep this scale (and potentially even larger when looking at some of the other fortresses that are present) I am more than fine with the graphics even if they were to stay like this.

It is indeed alpha gameplay, so there's still a large possibility of things being smoothed out or being upgraded. Hell, look at the original Shadow of Mordor gameplay feature with Ratbag and how it looked later on.

What's funny is that on the one hand I love that it's set in a LOTR setting and on the other hand I do know that the SoM/SoW themes are so different from what made LOTR.. well LOTR. Still loving it though. Can't wait for friday's gameplay stream, then we can try and evaluate to what extent all of this was scripted (hopefully it's not the exact same, high likelihood though).

Yeah I'm thinking the Nemesis interaction is cranked to 11 to show the possible saves or cheat death interactions.

A little surprised by how scripted it all looks.

I know they want to get their cinema cool on when they can, but it feels odd seeing how often this game takes away control from the player.

People complaining about Talion being god like did take note that dev mode seems enabled?

His health and whatever the blue bar are don't budge. He has unlimited executes and abilities/HP.

Trying to encourage tiresome stealth through most of the original was its biggest downfall. This seems to be going the opposite route and I expect a really good game because of it.

Oh and I hate Talion, he's soo boring and not even cool to look at. Not looking forward to playing as him again.

I hope there are more than just orcs and trolls. Give us Haradrim, Easterlings, men, nazgul, Uruk-hai, fell beasts, etc. Maximize that LOTR bestiary.

Really wish this wasn't in the LOTR universe. Seems limiting.

I think it is going to easily be the best LOTR game yet, despite not being canon. The first game was fun for what it was and laid a hell of a foundation for which this is built upon.

Think of what you saw more of a systems preview. If you ever played the Arkham games, what you just saw is if you played the game with the takedown meter never depleting, and you hitting it for every enemy.
Oh thank god , game looks fantastic then!

holy cow this looks amazing. Who doesnt want to run their own army? Definitely going to keep tabs on this. 2017 is gearing up to be one helluva year.

That's exactly how they did it in the first game. It looks like instead of improving its presentation, they chose to double down on stuff that interrupts gameplay.

Yeah, this game just looks incredibly strong. I love Horizon, Nioh and Nier, but a new contender has just appeared for me. But as always, we shall see.

Love the improvements they've made.
The world still seem utterly uninteresting, but with 4 regions, maybe variety will be there.
Combat still seems serviceable, but that's never been a problem for me, the focus seems to be elsewhere, and combat needs to not be in the way.

I actually love the intros to fights and other such scenes, where the Nemesis/memory system is put on display. It's incredibly well done and sets the tone. The animation and voice acting are both fantastic.

Same, i loved that shit.

It did get repetitive after 20 or so hours, but i wouldn't want it gone, just expanded.

Agreed. It makes the game standout from others, imho. Nemesis is their baby, why not show it off.

Yeah the problem in the first game was not the nemesis system. It was the boring over world and repetiveness outside of fighting

I love everything about the nemesis system but the rest of it just kills it for me. How incredibly easy the looks or the fear that thre may be too many of these scripted moments.
