Granblue Fantasy (Mobile Game) Spends 300 Million Yen on Giant Newspaper Ad

Keep in mind that this is a mobile game developer who was so surprised by their own success they literally don't know what else to do with all their money. They've tried everything and can't seem to spend any of it fast enough!

- They have 3 major original IPs they own: Rage of Bahamut, Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse
- They have localized all the games in English even when there is no official distribution partner in the US and Europe
- They started funding really high budget anime productions for their IPs.
- Unhappy with just paying other studios buckets of cash to make shows for them, they started up their own anime studio as well.
- They expanded to an Osaka studio to experiment with high end console production as well.
- Their next mobile game is co-developed by Platinum Games and Fuzz, and written/directed by Yasumi Matsuno.
- They have a PS4 Platinum Games Granblue action RPG in production from the MGR director.
- They have their own original PS4 RPG in development.
- They seem to contribute generously to charity causes every year.

Yet they still can't get rid of all those yens because everything they do seems to just make them MORE money. The horror!

I'd like to give them my American-yen if they'd release it officially over here! Then they can start diving in it like Scrooge McDuck.

Oh yeah I forgot. At TGS they also spent a pretty penny on making their entire booth a giant airship replica from Granblue where fans could board and experience a VR demo via the viewfinder. Lmao.

Shadowverse is in Steam, and Granblue is a browser game that's completely in English already.

GB is an absolute beast, but it's more like 2 IPs. Rage of Bahamut the game was shutdown, but they're still trying to launch an anime of it soon. 2.5 IPs?

Only iOS version was shut down in Japan, game is still running through mobage/android.

Not a major IP, they shut down the service in January.

Only the English version was shut down. The Japanese version is still running. The upcoming anime is actually the second series. The first one was their first anime production and it was entirely funded by Cygames without a production committee. With really high production values too. The new series is a sequel and will be twice as long, with production values which look just as high. I would say it's still a very important IP for the company considering how without it being a success, Granblue wouldn't have existed.

This is insane to me. A crazy level of success. I need to check them out I guess.

Fun fact I like pointing out which most people don't know: Cygames was founded by ex-Silicon Studios staff who used to work on console games. They have always said that core games are their first love, and that they hope to use resources from their mobile success to give back to that some day. That some day is now.

The president of Cygames directed 3D Dot Heroes. :)

I really appreciate how they use their money earned from mobile games to make console games.

I am just happy ex-employees of a game studio that traditionally make console games could find their feet again and are now swimming in money. Appreciate that they donates a lot to charity and eventually direct some of their profits back to console game again.

I find it extremely unlikely that they paid rate card for this ad. Leaving aside the fact it's 8 pages biked at once which on its own would attract a discount, their media buying agency would most likely have a pre-agreed rate if they use the paper to advertise in regularly.

Great creative work though (even if the idea of a double-sides gatefold isn't new), and it's the kind of thing you can only do in print.

What really surprises me is that Shadowverse has an astoundingly good localization. There's better dub VA in that then some major publishers' US releases.

Of course there's a few bad VAs, but by and large it's all pretty solid, especially considering how many voiced cards there are.

There's a translation and you can give them your money without a problem. I spent so much on Granblue already, don't even wanna think about it. And that's nothing compared to some people here lol. I'm also glad some my money is going into Daigo Umehara's pockets now, since Cygames are sponsoring him as of recently.

Mobile devs becoming the next big AAA studios in Japan is a weird development in my eyes, even though it makes tons of sense.

They're making probably a 1000% more money off of a smaller amount of people, but it still works out since the pool is basically infinite.

The whole games as service thing works if you have a system that is both seemingly fair but encourages you to gacha. I mean hell, they just "gave away" 200 dollars worth of gacha pulls in GBF last week - which makes everyone happy, and probably made some whales put in even more money so that they could buy a character.

I'd like to give them my American-yen if they'd release it officially over here! Then they can start diving in it like Scrooge McDuck.
It's stupidly easy if you have a Google account. Perhaps too easy if you're careful. lol

I want to petition them to buy the Shadow Hearts and Suikoden IPs and just throw money at Matsuzo Machida and Yoshitaka Murayama to make whatever vision they have for sequels.

Wow. Loved the first season of the Bahamut anime and the footage of the Granblue game looks really good.

wasn't that rizin MMA thing sponsored by cygames too

Yeah, Cygames are tossing their cash everywhere.

Also, for some studios, working on a big licensed IP makes or breaks their studio if that's the only thing they are working on. For Cygames, their iM@S games are ancillaries. (Technically iM@S is a Bamco IP but Cygames have their hands in deep with their mobile outings.)

Still, that big poster is worth hanging on the wall-

Wait a minute, Strike Time's on, gotta play GBF.

that puzzling face
Sounds a lot like Rovio except these guys have more than one cash cow.

I think the big difference between this and Rovio/King/etc. is the latter weren't exactly sure what contributed to their success and tried to transfer lightning from one bottle to another.

That, and because of the gacha concept, production values and rockstar-status of some of the people involved (Yoshida, Nobuo Uematsu, a whole plethora of recognizable seiyuu etc), there's a lot more brand awareness and brand loyalty involved.

I started sort-of casually playing it (meaning just getting the free shit) at the start of the last event because I wanted to know what the Platinum game was gonna be about. All I can say is after Fire Emblem Heroes I wish they'd spend some of their megabucks making it a 'real' game and not a browser thing, lol.

Not when it comes to script localizaiton. Try playing game undubbed. You will surprised to hear japanese VA giving entire eexposition speech about some ancient vampire and such and such,... And english line at the bottom is literally just "Nobody really knows for sure what happened"

I am NOT exaggerating in the slightest.

I don't really play many mobile games. Is this one any good? Their ad is working because I kinda wanna check it out now.
I tried it because people said that among this type of games it's one of the best.

It has great art and sound and overall production qualities, a somewhat decent underlying system, and is utterly let down in terms of pacing and overall design by being primarily targeted as a vehicle for getting people with personalities prone to gambling addiction to spend tons of money.

As someone who is f2p in the game, I don't know if the game actively encourages you to spend money. There are things that just require massive time investment that you just can't buy.

That's equally a result of it being conceptualized as an ongoing "service" (and the reason for that is when people come back regularly there's regularly a chance that they will spend money). And that's what leads to the massive pacing issues.

If you want an actual good mobile RPG, play Terra Battle instead. If you want high production values and tons of voiced story play Granblue.

Terra Battle was my main game till I lost my progress when switching phones. Their support was no help. Been playing Granblue consistently since English release last year. No regrets.

I don't know if that's a problem, considering they need to keep the carrot further and futher out of reach in order to keep people playing. There's never going to be an "ending", so the pace is dictated by meta. But that's basically like any MMO as well, where any new balance patch can throw the entire playerbase into disarray.

I guess it depends on how engaged you are with the game though. Unlike the horrendously designed Fire Emblem game, I have never actually felt like I needed to spend money in order to beat content. You can grind low level content and participate in co-op modes and still achieve something if you're not rich in SSR drops.

How much time do you have to waste on Terra Battle before it gets good?

Is it more time than you spend shilling it?

I'm under NDA so I can't really talk about the shilling contract. But Terra Battle generally gets really good once you get to chapter 20 or so and have a good range of characters to cover the different elements and weapon types, even if they're not super great characters, Having the utility to swap a party around really brings out the strategy in the later stages, and makes tackling the puzzle like bosses really fun.

I have to agree here. I love my waifus and I've been playing casually for a year now and have never once felt pressured to buy any crystals. (Note: I have been very lucky when it comes to getting SSR characters)

I just get on once a day for a short amount of time, play a few story missions and move on. I don't do any of the extra stuff really like raids, co-op or heavy farm for weapons.

Is Terra Battle still a good option for new players or is too deep in with required gacha rolls to be enjoyable?
