Metroidvania

People called Romanes they go the house?
So do we know much about romance options yet? I'm trying to figure out my choices for Male Ryder. In spoilers since some might not wanna see:

WHO I CAN ROMANCE

Cora and PeeBee are obvious. I have no idea about the Turian crew lady? Not really into her like that anyways.

WHO I CAN'T

Dormer-Doctor Asari isn't interested, nor is Lexi, the science officer. I dunno if they're gay or just not romanceable.

As far as we know....which isn't necessarily a lot...

You can also romance Vetra as both, yes. There's also the engineer dude as male Ryder, and Jaal for both (the last is only from datamining). The Science Officer is for Sara only, and the asari doc supposedly isn't romance-able, though that's one no one's sure on aside from partial datamining.

Reading Mike Gamble's Twitter feed, it definitely sounds like an expanded character creator is on the horizon. However, no telling when that will drop.

Yeah but I am somewhat curious what people can do with minor modding or cheat engine to possibly break sliders. I'll be busy for most of next week and when people with a more keen eye then myself have more then 10 hours to play with it maybe some interesting designs will come out without the added options.

I miss the critical mission failure music :(

A tip for anyone new to MP.

Do not save up your credits for the gold/black lootboxes.
It might seem enticing, but you're only hurting yourself doing this.
The gold/black boxes are for people who can extract from gold comfortably, by hoarding those credits you'll just run low on medigel/rockets.

Just use your credits to buy basics and the occassional advance pack, this way you'll rapidly max out common gear, while also unlocking some uncommon stuff. And you'll get a steady supply of items such as rockets.
Just do this until you've got all common/uncommon stuff maxed out and then head into gold and farm those rare/ultra rare drops.

MP is totally unplayable for me. I keep joining matches where the hosts DC, it cycles player around and the rubber banding is awful. I think it's clearly not in functional state.

I don't mind the idea of the gif thread because a lot of those gifs really are humorous, but the intent behind it is clearly malicious. Whatever, people have to spend their free time somehow.

Good lord this game has some awful gifs. I'm starting to get really worried.

If you care about animation quality skip the game, honestly. It's bad.

Personally? I don't care. It's not something that even registers for me and the only parts of the game I care about rule. But it's obvious people need to know this, and some people care, so.

Thank God I discovered this thread. The circle jerks are getting tiresome.

I mean, I don't care that much but if it's something that's like this at every corner then no way could that be something overlooked for me...

Based on all the gifs popping up I'm guessing it's not very isolated and will only get worse as you progress the game. Don't know what went wrong here but how could this possibly have animations worse than a 10-year-old Mass Effect and then DAI which was on the same engine...

I'm going to bring some positivity and say that our pilot Kallo is really cute I like him a lot so far! His little intro saying "excuse me!" as he's trying to walk through the rest of the squadmates was funny. The aliens looks really nice. So tall!!!!

Yeah all of the aliens I've met thus far look really, really great. Frostbite has treated the aliens well. I hope there is a Hanar in this game, I want to see it's glorious jello body with these new visuals

BioWare fans are both the most positive and negative about BioWare games, so I thought I'd venture to the new BSN to see which mood ruled the day. Seems like near universal praise there which feels weird for that place, lol. Still, I consider myself more a fan than a critic so my spirits have definitely been lifted.

This is reassuring, yeah.

Any good sidequests to do early on? I'm having trouble to fill my 10 hours as i already hit the end of the trial with the main missions. I don't really want to explore Eos just to stock up on materials and stuff since i won't be playing on PC next week (shitty laptop) I'd rather leave the exploring for then.

I tried scanning some planets (which is really fucking cool btw) but so far it's pretty disappointing since the best i have found are mineral deposits...

Also are you able to revisit habitat-7? I skipped a lot early on which might've been interesting sidestuff.

I can't play MP as it keeps disconnecting me unfortunately.

If you talk to Tann he'll tell you that
There was supposed to be a Quarian ark coming with the initiative, but they departed later than the rest of the arks due to technical problems. The Quarian ark brought several other species with it including hanar, batarian & elcor.

The gifs are the worst of the worst. On average it's mostly fine from what I've played.

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping. I'm use to buggy animations or bizaree jankiness in a cinematic in a Bioware game. It usually crops up every now and then in all their games. If it's like that here I don't think it will hurt the overall experience. The negativity certainly makes it sound like it's at every corner though.

What really sucks is they were gonna have a multiplayer beta/server test before release and it was scrapped. Maybe they were lacking in time and manpower but damn, some of these kinks could've been worked out.

GIFS

I don't mean to stifle conversation or anything, but there's a whole thread if you want to post these GIFs. I kind of appreciate that this thread seems to be steering clear of them.

I think you can simply mention the animation problems and people will understand what you're talking about. And that's definitely a topic for conversation, but posting endless amounts of them isn't really moving the conversation along.

But I'm just one guy.

Strange that you don't care about animation quality when animation quality was one of the biggest advances in ME1 and a lot of people noticed this.

I mean I'm not gonna claim it's "great" or even "good" across the board especially when it comes to some of the faces.

But most of the "hilarious" gifs are much closer to edge cases from what I've seen.

I guess they didn't do it because it was in no state to test at this point :S. I literally fell through the ice map in MP and got stuck on a low res screen of the ammo box while the screen endlessly shook and had to quit. I think in the end it will be a great game but it will requires a lot of patching to bring it up to speed. It seem from all the impressions so far that it shouldn't have released like this.

I like the game gives you a lot of free loot boxes for the MP though. You get free packs for having DAI, ME3 and preordering among other things. It's just too bad it's unplayable so far for me. Not touching the story until the full game releases.

The weird thing is that as far as I've seen (haven't played the trial) combat animations and effects look great, it's facial animations and some janky walks that seem to stand out.

I think it seriously has something to do with the eyes, they seem lifeless even compared to ME1 and it's not hyperbole.

When 50% of your game might be conversation, and most conversations have players looking at someone's face, and most people look at the eyes of the person they speak with, getting the eyes wrong can definitely stand out.

Honestly, it's many problems with the eyes, big and small. The sclera of the eye are too bright, universally. The irises could benefit from being darker and the pupils smaller. The cornea is almost non-existent thus making the eyes look flat and lifeless. The animation quirks have eyes moving erratically and unnaturally.

Because of how often we focus on another's eyes, even when we don't know exactly what is wrong, we instantly know when something is "off", and you can have a completely photo-realistic looking face, but if the eyes are wrong, you're going to have an unsettled feeling.

Currently playing the trial on PC.

The thing I noticed the most was that the models look okay at high settings, but the eyes still look dead and the animation is a bit hitchy. Mostly it's the eyes that are jumping out at me as unnatural and weird. YMMV, but it's not bothering me too much aside from that.

Footage I've seen of the PS4 release, on the other hand...

The new movement makes weaving in and out of fights so damn fun in MP. Hope the single player fights manages to match this feeling, it's a great high. Also I still absolutely love the pull+charge combo. It's immensely satisfying working with teammates to do.

I posted more detailed thoughts in the EA Access thread, but I really enjoyed Habitat 7 and the opening of the game.

I'm liking Scott more than I thought I would, and the game's opening mission FEELS like Mass Effect. That's all I wanted. I'm comparing it strictly to the other Mass Effect games...also helps that I'm one of those people completely oblivious to a lot of what really annoys people it seems. I just seem to be able to overlook it in favour of enjoying what I'm trying to be told by the narrative.

My opinion isn't really worth much mind. Everyone compares it games X, Y and Z, and I haven't played half of them, so the context of the game in the wider marketplace is largely lost on me (or if I have played, I just don't care). Like I said, after coming off the back of relaying 1/2/3 up until yesterday, it's been very easy to compare it the trilogy and the trilogy alone. In that respect, it feels shiny and new and a step forward.

Do you honestly think that we won't see Gifs in OT? ME:A has bad animations. People should just accept that.

Gifs of this nature are largely created and proliferated in order to shit on the game in question.

I would hope that the OT will not be full of trolls intent on shitting on the game.

Judging by the admittedly short time I've played (~2 hrs), the animation is subpar for a 2017 AAA RPG, but I didn't notice anything as egregious as the clips floating around. I'm sure some characters made some weird faces, but it's a lot harder to notice when you're playing the game rather than watching a 1 second moment on a loop in slow motion. No one has yet squat-walked down the stairs. The other thing, at least for me, is that as I play a game I naturally begin to accept as normal whatever visual conventions they are using for things like faces and expressions, however bad they are (if this sounds like faint praise, it's because it is). I'm pretty sure anyone who can bear to play a game made before 2010 is familiar with the effect.

To be honest, the major complaint I have the visuals supporting the dialogue is how static everyone is when talking - but that's been true for every ME game.

So in the case of ME:A, the faces look kinda weird, but I, at least, just get used to it. It's not a great feature of the game, but it's also not the kinda thing that just ruins it. Overall it seems fine, but I've played so little that I really couldn't say. I wouldn't have had an opinion about any of the other games in the series at around the same narrative point.

I definitely feel a lean towards the unusually bad animations camp, even considering the circumstances and BioWare's previous work. It's not universal; some of the animation jank is standard for for not just BioWare but these gigantic open ARPGs in general. Previously cited games like Wild Hunt are guilty of rough animations and assets too, sometimes to the point of hilarity. What strikes me as unusual with Andromeda is the frequency of heavily stilted, robotic facial expressions with some NPCs. In cases like this it's less of a case of intended animation implemented yet lacking polish, and more like certain exchanges are entirely missing expressions, giving a sense of being unfinished.

I'm still hugely convinced something has happened during development that has snagged the team up in animations and cutscenes, and I'm still leaning towards Frostbite 3's tools being kinda shitty compared to BioWare's experience with UE3. It's the little things, from the way FB3's asset pop and streaming limitations, the weird audio mixing, rigid stutter when the camera sometimes changes perspective. BioWare make their games in a very particular way; a vast majority of cutscenes rendered in real time, lots of camera cuts, a fairly large assortment of animation cycles and dynamic choice making, transitioning between playable sequences to dialogue and cutscenes and doing so quite frequently, etc. I can't think of a single Frostbite 3 game that attempts this technical feat outside of BioWare. DICE's projects tend to balance cutscenes between short, linear, heavily scripted real time stuff, and pre-rendered content. And rarely if ever is it interactive. Almost all of Catalyst's storytelling, for example, is pre-rendered.

The actual play animations are almost totally fine to me, though. In motion it feels good to play, and animates fine. I actually think the character movement and navigation is the best looking and animated a BioWare game has been, with a great sense of weight to footsteps and movement with believable feedback with changing terrain and speed. The rigid movement states are gone and it looks so much better. Loving the reload and combat animations too.

And I honestly don't feel any of the animations will be massively fixed in patches. They aren't bugs.

No, no, you're doing it wrong.

LOL wtf is this shit? What a tremendously broken pile of garbage. Sad!

Fixed that for you..

But seriously, it's nice to be able to have some rational and thoughtful critique in some threads some times. A lot of that makes a lot of sense. Diving back in shortly. Hopefully I won't exhaust the rest of my trial time in one night..
