Nier: Automata PC performance thread

Updated SLI profile: 0x081002F5

My previous profile broke the HDR tonemapping. This one has decent scaling and doesn't have the same issues. There's still flickering in the pause screen, but since it's such a minor issue (and since Metal Gear Rising had the same problem - Nier Automata is very clearly based on the same engine) I'm not going to bother trying to fix it.

Thanks very much for this :D

This results in a locked 4k 60FPS with my SLI 1080's. I only get the flicker when it's fading out of the main menu (that screen effect it tries to do) and in the select menu for quick using items. Like you said, not a big deal.

Only thing I'm worried about playing full screen is if it's doing its weird upscaling thing, but seems like it's working just fine for me.

The game has post-processing AA, and an implementation of it which is at least as good as SMAA.

Every game should have a non-postprocessing AA option, like this one. If not for now then for when I replay it using a GTX 1680.

Fair!

Don't you have a nice Tv you can hook the PC up to?

Nah, in fact I've never owned a TV ;(

Last TV I had in my room was a JVC 1080i CRT (was amazeballs)... when I was like 17 lol

I've been looking to replace my broken IPS for ages. I don't want to be spending 400+ on a screen that looks only a bit better than what I got nearly 3 years ago.

Alas, I'm a student but I'm working, so this year is ripe for an upgrade.

Oh for sure, but the thing is that people are mistaking unoptimized game with unoptimized port.

The game also doesn't run as well as it looks like it should on PS4 Pro, for example. There's a difference between a game with shitty performance and a shitty port, and it's important to keep that in mind.

If the PS4 Pro runs it at 1080p with no MSAA and can't keep stable 60fps, why would people expect equivalent graphics cards to run it at 1440p with MSAA? It's something that could happen if it was CPU limited on consoles, but it doesn't seem to be the case.

If this was 1080p and locked 60fps on Amateur PS4, then yeah, this performance is unacceptable. As it stands now, the only thing that's broken is the cutscene framerate.

Like, with my current PC, I usually run games at better settings and framerate than the regular PS4. This game I have to run at 900p, with no MSAA and no motion blur to get 60fps with frequent drops. Then I went on youtube and watched the same part played on vanilla PS4 with a framerate counter, and it dropped more on the same parts and had drops in parts I had no issues. So, as underwhelming as it is to play in 900p, it still falls in line with what I should expect from my PC.

Thankfully, I don't think I'll have to play at 900p for long, I'll finish Night in the Woods before playing this, and my new graphics card should arrive this week, so I'll probably be able to play at 1080p.

This is true. I don't think people realize that this game tasks all the hardware its on pretty heavily.

I am playing on borderless windowed now with G-sync enabled via control panel. Everything is okay save for few slow downs and fps drops when new areas load (I didn't transfer the game from my HDD to the SSD yet).

Got through the first boss/level with no technical issues at all. Fully maxed out 1080p full screen and nice smooth 60fps no crashing etc

Is the game bugged after this area or are the issues more sporadic?

the game is more demanding once you hit the open world. I haven't personally had any crashes.. so not sure about that.

I really love the art style of this game. All the game really needed for me was a splash of color and more contrast. By default the colors are too desaturated. I screwed around with Reshade but the varied environments change so much that it's hard to create a "one size fits all" preset plus I was getting too much bleed from MXAO. Here's a (scaled down) shot I did with Reshade:

33149303430_1c4ab5b4a0_k_d.jpg

Now that I figured out how to run windowed borderless natively at 3440x1440, without the wonky scaling issues, Reshade hurts performance too much so I just disable it. Reading this forum I discovered that the games built-in AO also adds it's own AA so I've switched to using that. Between enabling in game AO and cranking the brightness way down it still looks very good and I can pretty much lock to 60fps.

Seems like there's tons of light shimmering going on once you get to a certain part of the game. This area has a lot of lighting effects and is kind of distracting. Maybe has to do with their low resolution?

Picture is just a generic area (not a spoiler), but gonna spoiler tag it anyways.

Is there anything that can be done about stuff like this?

Never seen or heard of this issue personally. :|

It has been mentioned in this thread but I haven't seen a fix.
It's an issue with the button prompts, they appear with keyboard prompts despite using the controller and then flicker like crazy between both versions whenever I press a button.

Are you using DS4Windows? I see it sometimes, but it isn't consistent. usually only a problem for me if I've been accessing an in-game overlay like the one for Reshade. Happens to me w/o borderless gaming, so it isn't specific to that program.

I fix it by restarting the game and not accessing the overlays.

Unplug and replug controller.

Just played the game again and it didn't happen this time. Strange. I'm using a 360 controller.

Kaldaien has released a fix for the fullscreen bug among other things.

I'll make a new thread for this eventually, for now...

Download / Install
Special K 0.7.38 (64-bit) with configuration set to fix resolution problems in NieR.

https://github.com/Kaldaien/SpecialK/releases/download/sk_gui/nier_fix.7z

Overview of settings in dxgi.ini

[Compatibility.General]
DisableBloatWare_NVIDIA=true ; Disables GeForce Experience / NVIDIA Shield Features, since they are broken for some people.

[Render.FrameRate]
TargetFPS=60.0 ; Use my framerate limiter, since it performs better - SET TO 0.0 to disable
LimiterTolerance=0.05 ; Lower values increase CPU load of framerate limiter for more consistent framerates
WaitForVBLANK=true ; Framerate limiter is aligned to VBLANK (fewer dropped frames, possibly lower framerate)
BackBufferCount=1 ; Double-Buffered instead of Quad-Buffered
PreRenderLimit=3 ; Pre-Rendered Frame Limit, set lower for less input latency but possible stutter
PresentationInterval=-1 ; VSYNC (-1 = Game Preference, 0 = OFF, 1 = ON, 2+ = 1/<n> Refresh Rate
RefreshRate=60 ;FORCE 60 Hz instead of game's default (59 / 50)

[Render.DXGI]
MaxRes=0x0 ; Maximum Resolution Listed in-game (0x0 = Unlimited)
MinRes=0x0 ; Minimum Resolution Listed in-game (0x0 = Unlimited)
Scaling=Unspecified ; Fix Fullscreen Scaling, don't touch this setting

Keybinds

OSD can be turned off by pressing Ctrl + Shift + O, various Special K features can be configured by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Backspace

Misc. Info

On a side note, I also turned off quad-buffering. No idea why Platinum Games thinks that 3 backbuffers in fullscreen mode is needed, but it adds 2 frames of input latency (the OTHER reason you don't want to play this game in fullscreen exclusive mode).

This is an issue with the game's base coding i agree. I honestly expect base PS4 to run the game better considering other games, even some last gen ports run better..., this is to say nothing of Pro or PC hardware in this thread.

Base PS4 runs Infamous at an unlocked FPS at 1080p and looks way better than this game.

Just tried that fix, made the game run worse for me.

I'm currently using the afterburner/rivatuner fix to limit the framerate to 60, so I turned it off and decided to try Kaldaien's. With it, I was getting frame rate drops more often, and any slight fps drops (due to data streaming or tons of effects right in the camera) were much longer and more pronounced. I usually drop to 58-59 FPS, but with that fix I was dropping to 48 or lower.

Might be better once he has some time to polish it.

Playing @ 4k locked 60 FPS, SLI 1080.

I had the same experience. I was getting larger framerate drops,as well, back to Afterburner it is.

how do i windowed borderless

This is cool, but any ideas how to run this + Reshade at the same time? Both dlls are named dxgi.dll.

rename reshade's dxgi.dll to ReShade64.dll

add this to Kaldaien's dxgi.ini

[Import.ReShade]
Architecture=x64
Filename=ReShade64.dll
Role=Plugin
When=Early

also rename reshade's dxgi.ini to ReShade64.ini.

I"m confused, what is the fullscreen bug? I'm playing in 21:9 full screen and it seems to be okay to me

The full screen bug causes the game to render at slightly under the intended full screen resolution. Most commonly 1050p instead of 1080p.

An easy way that I spotted it before I even started playing was that when I shift tabbed, the Steam overlay was blurry.

okay, i thought that was just over zealous AA, but now that I think of it the menus are off too, thanks

I solved my Bunker scene-skipping issue. I wasn't alone, as there are several Steam Community threads about it. This post is for anyone else in the future who may run into the same glitch which appears to be caused by poor QC.

Strictly speaking, I'm not exactly sure what part of what I did solved it, but I did solve it. Here's what I did: I went into Nvidia Control Panel and did a RESTORE of my settings on the "Manage 3D settings" tab. Under "Adjust Desktop size and position" I set it to NO SCALING and perform scaling on GPU. Finally, I set the game to 1600x ____ (900? whatever that common resolution is) and played through the sequence again. Issue was resolved. After the sequence, I set my resolution back to native and turned my custom DSR factors back on and all has been fine ever since.

I want to stress that I don't know exactly what of those changes solved it for me, but it's one of (or maybe all of) these. Awful bug and very poor QC by Platinum, but you can fix it. Good luck, guys.

I drag the files over, and the game doesn't even launch.

Edit: NVM. got the automatic installer.

Edit 2: it doesn't even fix the fullscreen issue....Forget this fix. It makes the game run worse for me.

You can manage 720p30fps if you turn down some settings, buy it on PS4 instead.
