Idk man, i enjoyed my time with the game. Why listen to reviewers who bring their own opinion into their final scoring? Make yourself your own opinion

As someone who got a discounted preorder, enjoyed Dragon age 2 and Mass Effecf 2 is probly my GOTD this is a dilemma. Do I:

A. Keep my preorder (uk) play on Friday. I'll probly enjoy it.
B. Keep my preorder but wait a while for patches and dlc
C. Cancel my preorder and play Infinite Warfare instead (cos I just got that cheap). Probly pick the game up later in the year especially if the price falls dramatically.

I'd cancel and wait a few weeks. At the very least you'll probably save £10~15 (and some of the jank might be patched).

So they say. Where did all that money go into?

Idk man, I have these reviewers that seem to mirror my own tastes. Why waste money like an idiot on a game that I probably wouldn't enjoy? I feel like that qualifies as my own opinion.

Because some people don't want to spend their hard earned money blindly & multiple reviews provide an overarching consensus on quality that can aid in decision making...

I've cancelled my pre-order, I thought atleast this game would retain the bench mark of the original trilogy, it just needed a new location, new characters and a decent story and thus far it seems that's fallen below the mark of a trilogy of games released years ago now

It strikes me they had development/script issues and they've just shipped the game anyway, so i'll wait until its patched and possibly some redeaming DLC comes out
Until then i'll replay ME 1-3 on my PC

This is like Microsoft handing Halo over to Cerrain Affinity. Yes, they made some DLC maps but that does not mean they are ready to hand the next multi million dollar budget iteration over to them.

I really wish more devs would just look at what CD Projekt have done. Not the details, but the formula. They get it. How to marry cinematic story telling with an open world. More companies need to take inspiration from they way they have done things.

CDP didn't do anything special, they just did the usual formula extremely well, and you can't invent talent if you don't have it (at least at those levels).
Nothing wrong with not being the best in the business, it's just how life is, play to your strengths and work with what you have doing your best, it doesn't mean anyone can just replicate something like W3 by sheer willpower tho.

So really, maybe they should've just aimed lower with this, or give it to another team that could handle it, i guess.

OK so it sucks basically. I guess I was ready for that but goddamn, Bioware - get it together! Your name used to have cache!

So long as people like this exist:

I have zero doubt that they could easily hit that.

3 million? Lol yea if there's more people like me that buy it twice. Got the nerd urge to see how it runs on my laptop as well as I still prefer keyboard & mouse after trying the trial on xbox one. So, checked on the budget (excel spreadhsheet I keep) and once I deemed it was ok, I bought it on PC as well.

Back to the reviews controversy. I gave up on Giant Bomb, Gamespot, & IGN a long time ago. Mostly stay with one or 2 editorials for my reviews (one for PC & one for consoles/handhelds (3DS).

Yep. If this game wasn't the only place I could get what I want I wouldn't get it either.

Yeah but I already got £10 off my preorder because of Amazons thank you thing earlier in the year. I think I'll email them and see if they can switch it to my Persona 5 order.

The game's first gameplay reveal was an incidental tech demo for PS4 Pro presented without any context or introduction to what was going on or what the game was about. And that was in October, 5 months ago.

Yeah, I don't think it's that simple either. Still, EA oversee all off this and fund it. They were still happy with this team handling the ME franchise, and while we'll probably never know what went on during development the game has shipped as it is. While people leaving a team once something is complete is normal, it seems a few higher ups and leads bailed from ME:A. Not that great a sign, usually the higher ups if they produce a gem stay on for a sequel or another project.

Let me revise that. That sentiment does not need to die, but that being the default assumption needs to die.

This quote sums up a lot of how I felt playing it. I'm still going to finish it and I'll probably end net positive but it's not the game I was expecting. I think it might of even scored better if it wasn't attached to ME.

Destructoid Mass Effect: Andromeda spends a lot of time not really feeling like a Mass Effect game. If anything, it feels like a spin-off -- the sort of thing created by another studio that's unsure about what direction to take it. Like in the game itself, there are problems with the atmosphere. But Andromeda is very clear that it doesn't aim to be like the other Mass Effects. New beginnings, not funerals -- for better and for worse.

Even as someone that was burned by ME3 and had zero interest in ME:A this is kind of sad to see. Game must be pretty terrible.

fuck, my fears confirmed. i felt no hype from the trailers, it all looked so.. bland. characters were not even close to as charismatic as Garrus or Tali or Thane or even Saeed (a minor DLC character that i can still remember which is a miracle). main antagonist looks and sounds dumb too.

this wouldn't hurt so much if the game came out in 2015 or something, but after 5 years of waiting... ugh. i really believed they knew what they were doing.

but wait, is the MP any good..? maybe i'll treat this like some treat COD/Battlefield etc and just go straight to the MP skipping the campaign altogether.

oh well, at least there's still RDR2 this year (unless it gets delayed which it will lol). i don't think Rockstar will put out any major game that will get any 6s, they'll polish and polish as long as it fucking takes until it's absolutely stellar in every regard, and you can bet it won't have PS2 level facial animations or cringy voice-acting, thats for sure.

ALL HAIL R*

I'll bet you some of those favorite games of all time were not AAA games. We entertain a hobby where good production values historically means 80+ scores. "Had a total borefest of a time, but boy did that skybox look purty, 85". You see this reflected in the score distribution, where the more mature outlets give it 6'es, and the current metacritic is propped up by smaller websites. So yes, 7.5 for the game it is, is probably indicative of a mediocre game. The proof of course is in the pudding, but I'm not a person swayed by production values.

Yeah I agree with this.

Bioware is just a name now. It has little to nothing to do with most of the people who made those games great. It's been clear for a long time this isn't going to touch the OG in terms of character and narrative.

Anyway, for a game this seemingly messy and rushed, the scores probably aren't that bad. Maybe after a few patches it could even turn out somewhat good.

I'm not sure that a few patches will be able to resolve the character animation because that would require a huge overhaul. Patches also won't fix the story and how it's told. It won't fix the sidequests either.

I will appreciate the day when "the game is huge!!!!!" Is not seen as some badge of honor. Obviously this is not happening in the AAA space barring some crash but there are like three or four studios in the world that can make a HUGE!!!!! game that's not full of filler or is shit. Bioware clearly is not that.

Bring the budget down. Bring the focus in.

...watch it bomb lol

I've been hoping for that day for half a decade. Meanwhile, Bloodborne is still kind of lonely on this gen's throne of best level design. Ironically, it's handholding-less structure gave me more sense of freedom than the majority of open worlds, which mostly feel like oversized hub worlds for secretly super linear games. I can also appreciate Resident Evil for making its overhaul not open world buzzwords.

Sheesh! looks like I dodged a bullet by not pre-ordering.

I'm a fan of the previous 3 games so will 100% be picking this up when it drops to <£30. Guessing by the review scores I may not have to wait too long for that.

Now what to spend my spare £50 on...

Yep, I feel the same way. I'm actually not dismayed whatsoever by the scores or reviews I'm seeing, as it seems consistent with what I saw in the pre-release streams...it seems like a "good" game that often struggles with the moments that made the original trilogy great. I loved ME 1-3 so much in spite of their flaws that I am sure I can do the same for this one.

While I still look forward to playing it though, I absolutely think I can wait for a bomba-price drop on it in the next couple of months or so.

Oh look, animation bug gif without mentioning that you have to really force that to happen. You need to tap A and D very rapidly and constantly.

How likely player encounters that bug during normal gameplay? Very unlikely.

/banter

Either way, not a great idea to pretend a ton of the jank isn't seen normally. Read the reviews or watch videos on YT. Lots of wonky animations, things missing, and random unexplainable goings on. All of that is fixable, or most of it should be, but good luck fixing the writing, quests and characters :/

Hmm yeah if they won't change maybe just keep it. Amazon CS are usually quite good. Just send them a link to metacritic and say please :p

It's kind of funny how "mediocre" = "it sucks" this year just because we're so spoiled for choice. I'm not even close to completing all the games I'm interested in from 2016 and 17, and it's only March!

People from the original ME team transitioned to Montreal though. E.g. Mac Walters.

75 is still a good score for me, but the impressions about certain aspects have me torn. I think I'm just going to have to go ahead on in and see for myself.

No worse?

If it wasn't worse it wouldn't be scored where it is.

Reading some of the reviews, it looks like it's being scored where it is because it stayed the same and didn't get better.

"Ones" as in all previous ME games? Because nope. Only if you talk about ME3 maybe. That game's writing was already trash.

Are you sure you're talking about the games and not the fandom that grew around them?

The writing has never been the strong point.

Hard to believe that "fans" of the franchise will not play this game for the scores, real fans heh

With my back log growing substantially, there are just more games that I'm willing to play over this based on reviews alone. Just finished Zelda last week and started back up with Horizon. Neir Automata and Persona 5 are going to eat up a lot of my time as well so I'll eventually end up playing this probably when it's at a lower price. Which will most likely happen a lot sooner than expected I bet.

I don't have a clue whether to get this or not now.

It would be my first Mass Effect, but I played DA:I and i didn't enjoy it.

It would be between this and Persona 5, with Persona 5 also being my first Persona game. I think I'll just wait for P5.

I know game has its issues with animations and character models, I have played it for 10h. I'm not denying that. GIF you posted just is facepalm worthy because it's bug that requires quite a bit timing and effort to create. Seen it going around one too many times as "Look, this is how they run normally!" shitpost so felt need to comment on it, even if that wasn't your intended message.

In hindsight did the troubled marketing campaign probably only reflect the troubled game development

I can tolerate a certain level of jank, and even appreciate technically less impressive games, because often there is a depth of gameplay to compensate for the lack of wow-factor.

What I can not condone is a general lack of polish and technical incompetence in a game marketed as a blockbuster, AAA release. I think the key factor is expectation. Don't lie to me as a consumer with regards the experience I will be getting.

I rate the Mass Effect series highly, and will definitely pick this one up further down the line, once they have patched it up to where I feel a major release ought to be targetting in terms of performance.

Play the old trilogy.

ME 2 is one of the all time greats.
