Microsoft Studios (& Partners) Current and Future Landscape

I honestly hope they don't announce a new halo game, gears game or forza game at E3 and ONLY show new IP. I don't know what studios they have to actually make this happen but god I just want to see new original AAA IP on Xbox to get me excited about their consoles again.

More sequels to old IP is so uninteresting and safe... take some risks on new ideas please Microsoft

Halo and Forza will be at e3. Yes everyone wants to see new IP but you can't expect them to just ignore their biggest franchises.

Sure wish they would. Let them breath a little, we don't need to see them every year or every other year.

I agree with Forza. I think Halo and Gears have a good cycle, Halo at 3 years and I'm assuming Gears is also on 3 years.

Microsoft just needs to build more teams at this point, just letting their biggest money makers rest won't do them any good.

Define what genres you want in "new IP."

Because if Microsoft comes out and announces a whole slew of new IPs, but they're all multiplayer-focused games, I'm pretty sure like half of GAF would implode in 200+ page threads with nothing but raw anger and statements like "How can you even justify this?" made against people who are genuinely excited about said new IP.

Yes. I'm tired of this whole shtick at this point. Like singleplayer games somehow have more merit than multiplayer ones. And now I'm just picking apart a random post stating a desire for new IPs.

Maybe I should just take a break from GAF for a while.

I wonder if this year's Forza couple be a third sub-series like they teased a couple of years ago, if they're actually doing that of course. Would be really refreshing depending on what it is (fingers crossed for an all-out arcade racer like Burnout).

New video game properties that aren't sequels to old ones. Don't really care what genre it is. Like how Sony took a chance on Horizon instead of pumping out Killzone 5 (thank god they didn't do this). Give me new worlds to explore, and new characters to get attached to. I don't need more master chief, that's just me though. I realize there are still millions of dedicated Halo fans but that's just not me anymore.

As for the rest of your post idk what that has to do with what I said, but i don't care if its Single Player or Multiplayer. Preferably single player for me, but its whatever.

I don't need IPs but can we got into chest and pull some old ones out. Also I don't think MS gets enough credit for doing Halo Wars 2. Can we plz get Perfect Dark

I think its nice that he (if its really him) replies to such questions. The information gain of these tweets is close to zero but its a nice gesture.

Wait, those Cities games are coming to XB1? I had no clue. I always see them on Steam but the graphics look beyond what my laptop could do so I skip it. Will pick that one up.

I'd honestly be satisfied if they announced Near and Nioh coming by years end and a statement that they were working with renewed vigor to try to not get written off by Japanese developers seeking a western audience.

Always wondered why rare didn't pull that water racing game out of Kinect sports rivals and release it standalone (as a controller game with mp)

Oh god, stop with this, makes way too much sense. I actually asked for this since Kinect Sports was released, the jet ski portion of it is underused. They absolutely need to make this into a game playable with a controller, online mp etc. It looks amazing... everytime i play Kinect Sports and play the jetski game, i'm blown away by the graphics...

Come on Microsoft/Rare, you can do it !

It's really disappointing that we really might have to wait till E3 to hear anything. I mean we not even getting rumors. Nothing positive or even negative. Legit no leaks.

As frustrating as it's been to deal with little to no new info on new games I'm actually glad in some ways.

It adds a lot of mystery to what they have up their sleeve and it makes E3 all the more an event to look forward to.

We said that last year and got fucking Dead Rising 4, FH3 and SOD2.

Which are fine announcements, but we've had 3 new games announced since Gamescom 2015?

No rumours is *never* a good sign

I mean would you rather have them announce more stuff with open ended dates?

I would question why they didnt have more stuff ready to show at that time, where the hell all the new IP is and also, I have never had a huge problem with them announcing stuff early, announcing a partnership is fine with me the problems seem to arise when they start dicking around with demands during development. I think they made a mistake not announcing a game for Scorpio launch, big new IP, partnership etc, assuming there even is one

Apathy towards their software is real, whether its on gaming forums, the media or buying consumers, show me something that is actually exciting ffs.

A new Forza every year is more certain than my next breath, Dead Rising is not an exciting moneyhat in 2016 and State of Decay 2 is legit exciting, but 2 zombie games at the same show was a weak as well reveal, even if SOD2 is by far the most exciting game they got coming, Undead Labs going to do good work there

Hell yes.

For one it'll mean MS is actually working on something rather than letting their fans dangle in the wind while their competitor announces games left and right. And Phil's response about good games not being used as weapons is ridiculous considering that's a major factor of what drives a person to purchase a console to begin with.

Everyone can talk about how they wish companies would hold their games until closer to launch but when you're trying to sell a console thats more or less an investment you need to let fans know what they're in for. Sony has been the master of this.

Then take into account all the talk about games games games when Phil took over. Talking about five new studios, investing a billion dollars into games, then canceling Scalebound, Phantom Remastered, Fable Legends, closing down Lionhead, letting Twisted Pixel go when they were supposedly working on a much larger game, canceling their Obsidian game, the Master Chief Collection fuck up. I don't blame anyone if they bought an Xbox One over a PS4 and feel like MS royally dropped the ball for them.

Blood Wake 2 would be the real Scorpio killer app.

Game was so good, thanks for reminding me about this.

Blood wake and how about a new crimson skies?

The issue with them just showing multiplayer is that's what mostly this generation has got wrong so far. Couple games like overwatch, destiny I guess got it right somewhat. But a lot of them screwed the pooch in how they approached value, and trying to shove microtransations in games that don't need them to make them more of a service. Which is why your seeing such a big insurgence of Single player games. Especially from Japan since they don't put a lot of micro transactions in their games outside of costumes. Western development has been on a war path to try and make their game a service since a couple outlier's like GTA V, have been able to do.

Xbox use to be about having a little of everything especially single player games. But their hook was play a campaign by yourself with a friend next to you or online. Now they have been about playing online 24/7 and their whole monthly xbox live activity numbers they throw out proves that for PR spin mind you.

They are not the brand they use to be and the people who use to make good decisions like shamus and J allard have been long gone. Spencer is a games guy, so it's perplexing he's not fighting for games that represent xbox heritage like single player games, split screen co-op, and western rpg's.

Xbox is the console that brought Bioware to consoles, they brought starwars rpg's to consoles, brought Ninja Gaiden to 3D to consoles, brought PC games like Half-life, Chronicles of Riddick, farcry, fuzion frenzy, Kung Fu choas.

I mean yea they didn't make those games but they talked to the right people and got them on their platform, or funded the port of the game.

Not a problem, one of my favorites from the original Xbox, and don't even get me started on games MS has forgotten about.

All this talk about Microsoft being in desperate need of new IP, I find it be mostly hogwash. MS is sitting on a fucking goldmine of IP that they choose to do jackshit with. Crimson Skies, Mech Assault, and Blood Wake are just 3 off the top of my head that have no current gen equivalent.

What happened to all those SEGA games us OG xbox fans fell in love with?

Otogi? Dead. (Lol, yeah, Xbox had not one, but two exclusive FROM action games for those who don't remember)
Jet Set Radio Future? Dead.
Gunvalkyrie? Dead.

Even without SEGA

Stuff like Breakdown? Nope.
Metal Wolf Chaos? Long gone.

That's why this Phantom Dust rerelease is as big of a deal as it is to some of us, because it's like for a whole second someone over at MS Remembered that the OG xbox was even a thing.

None of the higher up hype E3 like no tomorrow this time, this is a good sign.
When they use word like special, greatest then you can start worrying.

I never understand why that is such a problem. That can only backfire for the company if the game ends up getting cancelled.

The secrecy with this industry is weird sometimes. We have movies beeing announced with exact dates 6, 7 years before release. While with games if its more than 18 months people are frowning their faces about it.

Especially when there are plenty of games coming out as is. It doesn't matter to me that Death Stranding, for example, doesn't have a set release date when I am struggling to play Horizon, Nioh, Yakuza 0, Persona 5, etc... in a single quarter.

I would like it if MS announced something new and exciting further away in addition to their usual fall releases (yeah, I know, Scalebound but we'd just go down that road if it led to that point). I just want something unexpected to get me hyped for Xbox.

Sorry for the double post 😐

Great point

And just to add to the second line, one of those 3 announcements is a yearly IP and another will be on PS4 later this year. So yeah...

Well Microsoft could definitely use some dedicated single player games from their 1st parties.

I just want a new Alan Wake and a new Banjo game done right.

My main issue is that Phil talks about risks and how hard new IP is, yet I see literally no risks going on except SOT, they've released many broken/unfinished games this gen, not backing their titles sufficiently and throwing them into the dumpster in the holiday season.

Last E3 was as damn safe as you can get and that wont wash if they *really* want Scorpio to succeed. People seem to think first-party has lost its draw as being important, I completely disagree, when you're down that is where you build yourself up from which is how Nintendo have stayed relevant throughout there somewhat troubles and Sony with the PS3.

Scorpio isnt going to mean shit if they don't have at least one damn game which makes people think "I really have to play that" and that is there big problem, I don't think they can pull that off.

Back in the day of the likes of Gears of War and Mass Effect I felt like they were helping to make something great (even if it was just $), these days anything great that seems to get out is probably by accident.

It's just mind blowing to think that this exists and they will never have the common sense to turn it into a full-fledged, controller based game.

It's just sitting there. Tune the tracks to be more competitive, add a few more. Insta-buy.

Should have happened years ago, but they like to sit on top of all this glorious IP until it stagnates.

An element of what Phil often talks about is the balance of internal development and external development of first-party titles, and while he's never outright said so, it's quite clear his preferred approach is to divest new IP weight-lifting on external studios while his internal teams (except Rare since Kinect is no longer a bankable IP) focus on being a polished machine, getting out franchise games consistently.

I'm not one of those who thinks there's any special-sauce or major difference between internal funding and external funding (ultimately, exclusive games are funded and made, the difference being studio ownership), but over the past 3 years, I've been slowly but surely changing my view on this, in light of Obsidian's struggles as a studio, Ready at Dawn/Remedy's lacklustre release in Order/QB, and most recently, ReCore. Same is true in Japan as AA-sized devs I thought could potentially work at AAA level end up underdelivering when it comes to console projects. (Media Vision)

To me, it's starting to feel like there are fewer and fewer independent studios that can be consistent deliverers of AAA experiences, as teams become bigger and expectations heighten. Other than Insomniac, I can't name a studio off the tip of my tongue that I can confidently say that with a AAA budget they'll definitely deliver a AAA quality game within a reasonable dev schedule.

I'm at the worrisome stage where there's a degree of extra-concern when it comes to new AAA IP announcements from MS, if it's not from a rock-solid studio or an internal team, because AAA development is only getting harder and the pool of talent with reasonable levels of assurance is dwindling.

Microsoft shouldn't worry about what GAF thinks. We've seen new IPs this gen that have found both critical and commercial success. So that shouldn't deter Microsoft from taking risks with new IPs. Not every new IP is going to be a hit, but you can't stop trying just because you failed a couple of times. Microsoft needs to look at who their core audience is and figure out the genre that makes the most sense to invest in for a new IP.

That's what they are doing now. State of decay, Crackdown and Sea of thieves are games geared toward the existing audience. They have a plan. Whether it works or doesn't who knows.
