Splatoon 2 Squid Research Lab (news updates on the game)

Splattershot came with burst bombs in the original too. Same with splat charger and splat bombs; only their specials are different. Though this special is kind of disgusting for the splat charger since it gives you a nice tool to help out in charger duels.
Sure, but then roller originally came with suction bomb.

Can't wait to see two chargers bust out lasers against each other. It's going to be like Ghostbusters.

Looks like they've already made a couple of changes to the Reef...noticeably the bridge in the center. Twitter gifs suck =/

edit: I'm dumb, they already tweeted a pic of how the map looks now compared to reveal a week ago :p

There are new videos from the Tumblr showing off the specials (apologies if old):
Sting Ray
Splashdown
Tenta Missiles
Inkjet

Lots of great details:
- Just how slow turning the Sting Ray is from the player's angle.
- The "warning" radius and timing of Splashdown.
- The targeting reticle for Tenta Missiles (awesome, by the way), plus the warning to opponents.
- The marker for where you're transported back after Inkjet elapses is clearly visible. If it is also visible to opponents, that would be quite a drawback.

Is the global test fire tomorrow only for one hour?

That is pretty lame if so.
Probably a sort of control server test, it will guarantee the most folks at once. Once the multi hours start they have a base on how the netcode will respond and can calibrate accordingly. Hopefully the netcode is good this time.

Have they said much about the hub? One of the things I was hoping for the most in a sequel was a PSO/Destiny-style multiplayer hub where you can see and interact with other players who are walking around doing their own thing.

The new stages seem notably more detailed than on Wii U! I hope returning stages get a makeover to match.

Inkling's models looks so good in this game.

wow, the character models look great. nice step up from the previous game.

Love the look of the new stage. Game definitely seems a bit cleaner than what I remember seeing from Switch event videos.

As others have said, visuals are definitely looking better there. IQ is still a bit messy on the third image (I presume the second is a bullshot), but lighting is improved.

Starting to look noticeably nicer than Splatoon 1.

The IQ is very good on that second screen. The inklings are a lot more detailed and clean too.

Don't be fooled. Just like with Splatoon 1, Nintendo mostly releases bullshots that have strong anti-aliasing instead of actual in-game screenshots. Even on the most recent videos you can easily notice it looks worse (disregarding YouTube's recompression).

Ah, they have changed sets since initial reveal. Thanks for backing me up.
We didn't find out until last night yesterday actually lol. Examples of Japanese comments:
泣きました
"I cried."
ローラーに対する死体蹴りはいつまで続くんですか?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
"How long will you continue to kick the roller while it's down?" or something like that.
ローラーのカーリングボム没収したんですね
その調子でリッターからクイックボム没収してください
"You took away the roller's curling bombs, right.
In that case, please take away the burst bombs for the e-liter."
カーリングボム返して!!!!!!!!!!!どこまでローラー弱くすれば気が済むんですか??????????????????????????????
"Give back the curling bombs!!!!!!!!!!! How much will you have to weaken rollers to be happy????????????????????"
カーリング返して
ローラーのカーリングボム返して
"Give the curling bombs back."
サブ前の方がいい気がする
"I think the subs were better the way they were before."

I know but I was specifically talking about models, not the lack of aliasing.

They've changed it since the video upload?!?

Gah, this is disappointing; it sounded like an amazing roller set.
The pic I posted is from earlier today. And yeah, going from the comments you're not the only one disappointed. lol

In the original Japanese tweet they said they changed some weapon's subs and that both subs and specials will be undergoing "review". AKA anything can change at any time up until release.

That is pretty lame if so.
People have to understand that this isn't a demo or even a Beta, it's a stress test.
They need to have the most amount of people trying to connect at the same time to make sure the servers can handle it.
The best way to do it is to restrict the hours of access, especially when we are talking about such a "low" userbase.

Is is likely that the online going to be regional this time around?

I believe they've already said it's still global but any mention of it so far has just been in passing and I wouldn't put a ton of stock in that yet.

Still, I personally kind of doubt they'd go with region-based servers for this anyway.

Hopefully it will continue to be global, the first game was extremely successful that way, and those regional splatfests were awful displays of how laggy North American players can be.

Is there any indication in the Japanese text that gear slots can be rolled or selected individually? The last picture seems to suggest this.

It seems that you pay the kid to detach the subs from your gear. You can then reattach those subs to fill in blanks on other gear.

I sure hope there are new perks, just to make things a little Fresher. Not really expecting it tho.

Being able to build a custom perk build manually tho if that's what this really is is huge.

Yeah it says the sub abilities you detach become "ability shards" that you can use to put a sub you want on other pieces of gear. It doesn't seem to be 1 to 1 though, so you might need a certain amount of shards to create one sub.

Anyway the kid's name is Spikey or Spiky in Japanese, seems to be a combination of Spyke's English and Japanese names (which was Downy). The description just says he's a kid who admires Spyke and works for him as a subordinate/apprentice.

Interesting. Looks a bit like Spyke, but more inkling-scale. I'd think it's an urchin, except Spyke was an urchin and was, well, noticeably spikier. But then, Spyke only ever had one eye visible, which corresponds to this.

Spyke's offspring? Spyke themselves, redesigned?

His name's Spikey, seems like.

Edit: Can't read, it seems

this sounds like an upgrade over the previous re-roll system no? unless I'm missing how it works
Yes this is far better. I'm hoping the chunk cost to install a perk isn't too high (although I would've liked for it to be 1-to-1 haha) but this is indeed still better.

His name is... Murch

Once you collect enough ability chunks you’ll be able to use them to fill an empty gear slot with a new ability. Theoretically, this means that repeating Murch’s gear scrubbing many times would allow you to mix and match additional gear abilities as you see fit! That would be incredible! It could be that this young man is even more talented than Spyke himself!

It's early and I'm not paying attention, but TL;DR will the game let me just wear what I want and is that separate from my abilities?

(like I have this ink resistance thing and then I can just put it on any piece of clothing?)

No, it looks like main abilities are still tied to gear, this only affects how sub abilities work. So ink resistance is still only on specific footwear for example.

The Ability Chunks seem to be for the sub ability slots, not the main ability.

I mean, can I put ink resistance on any shoe?

Essentially, I wanna wear my clothes, but not be naked in terms of abilities lol

I'm not all here right now, but I should probably try reading around more :v

Ink resistance (unless they change it for Splatoon 2) is only a main ability, so it can't be moved around or stacked on different pieces of gear. In Splatoon 1 at least it was only on 5 specific pieces of gear and that's it.

That super jump splashdown tactic. Finally we got a counter to the gang up.

The tipoff of someone having a full-charged special doesn't make it as useful as it otherwise might be, unless it's early game where you don't know off the top of your head which weapons have that special. And its range is limited enough that you could still camp them as they came down as long as you had a weapon of even moderate range.

I can't remember which abilities I needed the most and whether or not they were mains, but this is semi feelsbadman.

(but it might not be... I can't even remember what my loadout was anymore and it's possible that I just stacked a bunch of sub abilities, which would then be great and free me up to just wear whatever... it's possible that ink resistance was the only thing I actually cared about lol)
