sputum-flecked apoplexy
maybe amonkhet is like the return to sobriety of mercadian masques after the wild binge that was urza block and all the recent standard craziness

Mercadian Masques was a return to sobriety in the sense of waking up the next morning inside a dumpster with the world's biggest hangover.

Gids, for 3 mana that prevents you from losing the game. Great.

I was wondering when we'd get our first planeswalker spoiler.

Yikes, that's a monster of a walker for sure. 3 mana for a 4/4 that ignores damage, neuters a permanent of your choice, is also a Platinum Angel. Value, value, value.

Nvm: he does have indestructible. Misread. This guy is a monster once Grasp rotates.

Great, I missed Gideon in Standard. Finally, he's back!

I'm guessing he won't be a creature that often because he still dies to revolt Fatal Push, but still, a Platinum Angel + Pacifism for 3 mana is great.

Indestructible+prevent all damage. No Fatal Push in the world is gonna deal with this thing.

Thank god they are going to give us constructed playable spells that deal with Planeswalkers, right?

Right?

Indestructible.
indestructible

Yeah, I misread and thought they were reasonable and gave him some downdside. My mistake clearly.

Once Grasp rotates, this guy is going to do some serious damage. Your choice of 4/4 indestructible vs Pacifism that you can move around (and can neuter your Chandra of choice), all combined with being a Platinum Angel means he'll be a top card in standard for sure.

That is a very cool ability. Cool to see the "tank" side of Gideon. It could stonewall some decks that don't depend on damage to win for sure, but in a lot of cases it is functionally similar to gaining a bit of life so I wonder how good it actually is.

I don't think the emblem is as big of a deal as people think unless there's going to be a legit alternate win condition in the set. It's potentially annoying but it means him spending a turn not actually doing anything and, in the end, he's still a relatively low loyalty PW. And yes, there's other Gideon but he wasn't supposed to be here when they made this card.

The trials seem very good in limited. The red one in particular is very good by itself and bonkers if you get more than 1 cartouche.

In an aggressive meta it's entirely possible Gideon doesn't cut it.

My first impression of that ult is that it's very "win more". It doesn't effect the board in any way and any game where you can keep your PWs up is one you're going to win anyway.

The idea of making a Platinum Planeswalker is a good one.

Making it a 3CC planeswalker is monumentally stupid. Don't even think about it as a turn 3 play. You'll play it with 7-8 mana in play and get to either wrath first or hold up countermagic/removal.

If I made that Gideon in here as a custom card, y'all would have told me I was off my rocker.

Come the fuck on.

gid's second zero ability against aggro, or any archtype that goes wide:

against midrange/control, or any archtype that tries to win with a few big dudes :

against a surprisingly large number of combo decks:

All of these seem relevant, and encourage racing... which, hey, his first +0 does that.

Seems very strong. Doesn't even die to your own wraths if played in a control shell. His +1 even stops vehicles.

"Hmm, should we ban Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, it's been dominating standard ever since?"

"Nah, let's crank up the power level a bit more before we do anything, OK?"

Not just do they look like Limited all-stars but the trials are decent enough that I can actually see the potential of some sort of trails + cartouche package seeing play in constructed, especially if we end up in a slower format.

"We have decided that the best way to stop people from playing Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is to make another tournament staple Gideon that people can use instead."

I play new gideon, make an emblem, now I can't lose if I gideon. Next turn I play BFZ Gideon sacing old gideon. This seems criminal in standard. Fucking gideon tribal. Hilarious.

That honestly seems like a bad use of 3 mana and a card to me. If your Ally of Zendikar is sticking around you don't need "can't lose the game" insurance.
True.

Still is a 3 mana walker that can protect itself and whack the opponent as an indestructible 4/4.

I mean, I dunno. In many ways you've just spent your entire turn 3 saying "Hey, to win you're going to have to do something you'd almost certainly need to do to win anyway! Take that!"

Yup, same. The blue and black ones seem great in particular.

I know it's a stretch for the auras to see constructed play, but being able to buy back some early sifts/edicts is exciting.

Also exciting:
