Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Important to note that Forza 6 4k demo is not only running it at 60fps, but at a GPU load range of anything between 50-70%. That's crazy for something that was ported in 2 days with almost no optimisation other than art assets. There's so much headway for those devs to play with, assuming other game engines scale similarly.

The CPU is built with specific optimizations for certain games/engines. So it's awesome that they got it to run so quickly but it might not be representative from what you would see from every game.

So the extra power and optimization is all for naught and no improvements will be seen?

yeah-ok.gif

Might as well just scrap it then, such a horrible design and all. I'll just go build a PC and ascend to the land of the master race just to be sure. It's the only way.

fwiw seenowevil thinks 30fps is the devil's work and hates 4k so i wouldn't bother replying, unless this video said "every game will be 60fps locked" they wouldn't care :p

Fantastic speck run down by DF and the console specs looks killer.

Day 1, can't wait.

Now I need to start to research TV's too.

You know what would be shocking to me? If the following series of events played out:

  • Phil Spencer goes on stage at E3 2013 and announces that the price of the Xbox One would be $499 and receives the live audience equivilant of a record player scratch stop
  • The sales of the Xbox One were so poor due to a number of issues but chief among them the fact that they were priced well above Sony
  • Phil Spencer and team choose to remove Kinect in order to sell the Xbox One at the same price as the PS4 and possibly save the Xbox business
  • A couple of years go by and they decide to create a new, more powerful console as a pillar for the future of the brand
  • During the first step of the design phase, Phil Spencer gets up infront of his design team and says "We need to target a price of.... $499"

Yeah but during the same period they will have a console that can play the same games at lower performance for a lower dollar cost to the consumer this means that when it comes time to launch consumers will have the choice of either the premium product or the basic one.

I can't tell if people are excited about this or not. If this comes out at $399, this seems like a pretty beastly little machine. It could always be more powerful, but they need to actually sell the fucking things.

The demise of the x1 was a combination of things really.. At launch it had terrible PR .. TV TV TV on top of always on and built in Kinect... Then over time it was never at parity with the PS4 with Specs / resolution.. so from a multi platform perspective it wasnt on par in some cases. I believe that damaged the brand and pushed traditional Xbox user (from the 360)s off their ecosystem on to the Sony platform. What incentive does someone have now to move off the PS4 for the Scorpio when they can move to the Ps4 Pro with roughly the same graphic fidelity? Are graphics going to be enough?

MSFT killed Halo (pushed Bungie out), Gears of War isnt fresh.. Fable is MIA... Forza has never really been a huge selling point. Titanfall fell flat and is multi platform now.. Sunset Overdrive never really became a recurring franchise. Time exclusives don't really matter much anymore so im wondering what MSFT thinks is going to sell the Scorpio.. because it is going to be 500 bux at the bare min?

What is this?

Wow.

I'd guess from their perspective actually putting a more capable CPU would be wasteful. It does have to maintain compatibility with the old Xb1, so it isn't like they would be expecting games to evolve to use the extra CPU power.
Oh I'm not criticizing the CPU. It was the only logical choice for the system, and really the only option MS had was to upclock the Jag and put in some extras to help. There is nothing wrong with what they did.

I just think the people acting like it's a bigger improvement than it is are kinda silly.

I'm steel leery about it being able to do 4K. All we got here was a screenshot of Forza 3 saying it was 4k.. and by the way he was wording it didn't' sound like it was native 4K but some upconversion taking place?

Even if Forza 3 gets up to 4K I'm doubtful majority of games will be able to pump at at that resolution.

I mean, a 980ti at the minimum, and a 1080ti to be happy, with everything maxed is what's going to get you 4K these days and both those cards cost more than the whole system alone..

so much errors and salt in this reply

So i don't have to read through 30 something pages, whats the general reaction here? Are people liking this? Is it blowing the ps4 pro away?

Thinking about it a little longer, DX12 had already reduced CPU-GPU batch submission overhead by near 10fold over DX11. So while "halving the CPU load" of DX12 sounds impressive - what total percentages are we talking about though? Going from 10% CPU load to 5? DX12 overhead already was much smaller than high level APIs before it. Reducing DX12 load by 50% != freeing half the CPU.

Needs more than marketingspeak to know.

Quite. That it frees up the CPU to do other things should be unquestionable. How much it does so is debatable. However, considering that Jaguars are quite weak draw calls on those do have more overhead than on a PC cpu.

I think this will be a good compromise for people who don't want to buy a gaming pc but still want some power.

So it's exactly what we basically knew since last year.
Which is an incremental improvement on PS4 Pro, which is an incremental improvement on PS4.

Exciting.

This ^^

I mean, 6TF is what we expected. I haven't gone through all the info yet but so far, has anything in this reveal been a surprise?

Damn that seems to be a lot.
Like , A LOT

Clearly it's a powerfull machine

But somehow thiose specs seems expected. i would have been let down if it wasn't that much given the timeframe.

Sony and microsoft really want me to buy those 4K screens.

It's interesting they seemed to have gone with a pretty different architecture compared with the Xbone.

I mean we knew they were forced to if they wanted it future proof, what with the eSRAM workaround in the One being outdated, but it goes a lot further than just that.

That means optimization will cost pubs a lot more than going from PS4 to PS4Pro, and we already saw that a lot of pubs weren't really bothered with that until Sony created the forced boost mode feature.

It's impressive technology, but for now I don't really see who buys it except the people who just want bragging rights. Which admittedly is a not negligible part of the gaming community, but still.

I've not read all 17 pages of this thread, but am I the only one who thought DF (Leadbetter) was a little too enthusiastic about this reveal?

I mean, I love new hardware, and who doesn't like tech specs, but this particular coverage just seems overly glowing. I'm sure it was a condition of their privileged access, but I'm still taking all this with a large dose of salt.

Incredible. The little touches and things like system wide performance options for ALL games regardless of display resolution make a huge difference.

I'm in day one.

DF if you're reading I'd love to hear your feedback regarding the vega-esque improvements in Pro and the command processor/DX12 hardware implementation for Scorpio. In the DF Pro deep dive late last year it was mentioned that the Pro's GPU implementation had a couple of Vega feature sets, some that later matured into DX12 optimizations on the PC side. How does this compare to what's been done with Scorpio?

I'd link to the article but Eurogamer is dead lol.

Sony will almost certainly cut the price of the PS4 Pro before Scorpio is released, regardless of the price point Microsoft releases Scorpio at.

It's their only real play and they pretty much have to do it at this point. Scorpio trounces the Pro in literally all areas. A $350 Pro vs. a $499 Scorpio this fall? That'd be nothing to sneeze at.

Ok great spec, they nailed it, But... what make sell a console, ho yeah games.. everybody seem to forget all their project and studio they've close since last year...

Other then milking existing franchise in 4k PR bullshit i can't see them really shake the ground with anything...

Vanillalite

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Put me in the camp that the apu itself doesn't scream expensive so $399.

BUT

That extra 4 gigs of RAM + that vapor cooler makes me go probably over $399.

LOL what....

The GPU alone is at least 40% faster.

I swear, I've had to watch the video again after reading this thread, becuase it's almost like some people here are watching something totally different to what I just witnessed.

I think some people just heard the word 'jaguar' then closed the video and started to post.

Except Microsoft knows it's an enthusiast machine for a niche market at this point. It's not equivalent to the release of a brand new console that plays new games.

I like how Scorpio's hardware doesn't differ much from PS4 Pro but its implementation gives it the 40% advantage. Some very clever engineering there. This also basically confirms that Scorpio can compete with the PS4 Pro on price. Comparable price, 40% more powerful.

I thought he was just really impressed by some of the design decisions and stuff he had never seen done in a console.

I'm a huge ms fan , and I love these specs should future proof it for a few more years.

That said Its still years away for me , I am over halo , I was never a big forza guy and the new gears bored me to death .

With no fable I am wondering what else is in the horizon, so I will wait to see games .

Thankfully I was a big fan of there new ip this gen (ryse, recore , sunset , quantum break) . Sadly none of those will probably return but hopefully they are continuing to cook up new ips.

I'm in the same exact boat but probably wont be getting this. Rather just go with a PC for my next upgrade.

It's not "just jaguar". It's based on it with a lot of customization. So ignore people that try to act like it's the exact same CPU.

Watch the videos.

And more importantly it has a dx12 co processor that handles pratically 99% of the cpu burden into issuing commands to the gpu.

The cpu is essentially free to the game code on this console.

The specs are there for you to react for yourself. Let a tech-man be excited about tech.
It's not like the specs are bad and the are saying "this is amazing really" (Like the XB1 reveal was...)
