Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

I seem to be in a minority thinking the effort of catching the 4K/60 dragon is a waste of everyones time and money.

This hardware is useless as long as the software is shackled by the XboxOne limitation.

Exactly. They are already starting damage control because they are obviously nervous about the price.

Well, they should be if it launches at $500, which is likely. Sony will probably cut the Pro to $350 for the Holidays, and may even have a pack-in game (Destiny 2?). At that price difference, they aren't really competing in the same space.

Is the Scorpio more powerful than the PRO? Yes, slightly.
Will the games on Scorpio run and look better than the PRO? Probably not.

Why wouldn't they?
Sure the specs bump won't translate into a huge gap between the two but there absolutely should be some noticeable differences

You all people worried about paying 499usd for a console and not batting an eye when getting a flagship phone for +699usd.

And don't get me started on those complaints "no ryzen no buy". OCed Jaguar is the only route.

Seems like good stuff, but now it needs games, new fresh IPs, lots of it. Scropio is ntohing without a good lineup for 2017. Forza, Gears and Halo ain't gonna cut it, for me at least.

I do have a gaming PC, so perhaps I don't need one anyway.

Okay. I think I get it now.

They must have wanted to show this to the public to guarantee that there is enough time for MS to talk about GAMES in E3.

Show off all the dream games then at the last moment..... Xbox One Scorpio... $299.

BOOM!

I'm going to guess this will release at the same price the original xbox One came in at in the UK. So 429.99 with a game packed in. Probably fifa 18 or Forza 7.

Better start putting some money to one side.

I can see that being a possibility.

Sux for the Xbox One S owners who just purchased and possiby the PS4 Pro owners lol. But I guess that is how it is this gen.. with the Wii U / Switch as well.

So it's basically what anyone rational had been saying it was going to be all along: Xbox Pro. Good spec bump over XB1 for sure, but still using Jaguar (No matter how they try to sex up the labelling) is a mistake that's gonna hold the rest of the hardware back.

Just need some new games announced to see how they plan on selling this now.

Specs seem to be what many were expecting. Sounds like an impressive system.

The only level of disappointment I can understand is the use of Polaris instead of Vega architecture. Curious to see if it has any more customizations over the additional compute units.

They all knew about Scorpio before either of those systems were released.

My post brought up the post said it's "just" Jaguar. It's not just jaguar. It's a custom CPU based off Jaguar.
You didnt read my post then.

I expressed my disappointment with the PS4 Pro CPU as well which is also a custom Jaguar running at higher clocks. That balanced is purely compromise and the Scorpio takes it to whole new level of compromise.

This argument again

How many people actually buy a $700 phone outright?

Alright the system looks good, just like I knew it would. Show me some exclusives that I can't play on my Playstation Pro that aren't the Microsoft Trinity and you have a sale.

As someone who never had an XB1, this will be a very tempting purchase in order to play the exclusive games I've missed at 4k as well as having a 4k blu-ray player for Planet Earth 2 etc. I'd love to play Forza Horizon 2 at 4k, for example.

But as a market proposition I worry that the performance difference between this and a Pro isn't going to be enough to make up for the proposed $100 price difference and large gap in number of quality exclusives. The Pro seems like a better offer to your average console shopper, and it has the advantage of having way more people already in the PS4 ecosystem.

MS has reclaimed the 'most powerful machine; best running 3rd party games' title, but unless they can get to price parity or convince people that said power gap really matters, it'll be a struggle.

Everyone rational said they were using Jaguar, but your editorializing on what that means is not rational.

Why the hell would I spend $699+ on a stupid ass phone?
Seems we're not all the same or a single entity...

As someone with no interest in MS First Party and therefore no interest in Scorpio:

I still think the excitement's awesome. Lots of games I want to know more about on PS4, plus Scorpio stuff and footage, plus Switch talk and games for Switch? E3 gun b gud.

If Forza 4K demo has so much GPU utilization headroom (sorry Matt), I wonder maybe they can shift more CPU load over.

the forza engine is one of the best optimized engines out there. It was 1080p/60fps on the xbox one s. It's no wonder why they chose to show 1 screenshot of that game running at native 4k/60fps (cause they really don't need the extra cpu power for it)

Still extremely skeptical there will be many native 4k games on this, expecting to see a lot of 'dynamic 4k' with a few exceptions.

Well that's kinda my point, the specs aren't mind blowing, they're iterative at best, especially considering the late 2017 release date.

And there IS some oddness, for instance the assertion about custom hardware allowing DX12 to run with much reduced CPU load. Sounds good in theory, but so did the 'power of the cloud' or Kinect's fidelity or *insert Microsoft broken promise here*. I just would have thought DF would have tempered their enthusiasm for something that is so far only a promise. Normally Richard is excited about new tech, but also critical where applicable - this (unprecedented) reveal lacked the latter completely and just doesn't seem to sit right.

I don't know you are just trying to spin a narrative here that isn't there.
The Cloud was an empty promise since they knew they were behind power-wise.
DX12 hardware just is what it is and can or can't be utilized by engines.

Sounds really good. Just hope I can afford one by the time it's released. This makes me excited for the PS5 and neXbox as they'll be a lot more powerful than Scorpio.

I like how Scorpio's hardware doesn't differ much from PS4 Pro but its implementation gives it the 40% advantage. Some very clever engineering there. This also basically confirms that Scorpio can compete with the PS4 Pro on price. Comparable price, 40% more powerful.

Not at all! It comes almost entirely from Clockspeed difference.

Not to downplay MS accomplishments too much. But that 40% peak theoretical is almost entirely from the clock speed difference. 1172mhz in scorpio vs 911mhz in ps4pro.

Its a 40CU GPU vs 36CU GPU of the same design. So that is only 10% more GPU hardware. But running at much higher clocks. Thus they need that fancy cooling.

Any implementation advantages has nothing to do with the peak flop performance. It could help with sustained performance or better average real world perf. But nothing to do with the theoretical peak which is what that 6TF number is.

So which is it?
It's only one data point, and the extent to which the code is comparable at all is debatable
Also
To be fair the forza 6 engine is very fast and seems to scale very well. Even the gtx 970 (~3.5tflops) and the r9 390 (~5tflops) were already able to boost forza on PC to 2560x1440 on pc ultra settings, only the addition of 8xMSAA was able to bring performance down in some cases. And to be clear: 8xMSAA is ludicrous insane and extremely gpu heavy!

Just bringing things a bit into perspective because the 66% GPU usage on a 4k render with xbox one settings is impressive, but the engine plays a big role here too.

Most phones are bought on a payment plan
