Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

The thing is. Forza 7 will use the same engine 6 has. Forza 6 is already available on the PC with DX12. So i realised that this port doesn't say anything at the moment. Also the cars are not driving but standing still at the start grid. How will the performance be when everything moves.

Didn't Richard say they saw the demo running with all those cars and the GPU never was utilized more than 70%?

Pretty awesome for Xbox people or gamers that need it all. With my Pro my Pc and my switch I just can't swallow another console and 12 months of live just for Xbox exclusives (this is their weakest pillar right now for me)

It comes down to, do you want to play Red Dead Redemption 2 in true Native 4K? You can't really say Xbox One is just for exclusives. They do get pretty good third-party support, and that will only get better with Scorpio (or at least they'll get the best version of them).

It sounds like MS did their homework more than Sony did in the upgrade path. I'm not even referring to the better specs, jut in the way the hardware is used and how it will benefit existing titles and 1080p users.

lol why am I not surprised by these comments.

It's ludicrous really.

Why wouldn't games look better on more powerful hardware? This isn't the 360 vs PS3 gen anymore, nobody is banging their heads trying to unlock the power of these consoles, we're talking pretty standard architecture across the board here, so developers will be able to much more easily tweak performance improvements.

You all people worried about paying 499usd for a console and not batting an eye when getting a flagship phone for +699usd.

And don't get me started on those complaints "no ryzen no buy". OCed Jaguar is the only route.
Scorpio is looking great, but a smart phone is much more necessary this day and age. Comparing pricing of smartphones and high end consoles makes no sense practically speaking.

Also, The Pro was effectively $340 a couple of weeks after it came out. I remember target, Amazon and Bestbuy dropping the price to $340 price matching each other before black friday. they wouldnt have done that if they weren't making money off of them. That means Sony still made money off of those $340 sales. Sony should have the Pro down to $299 this holiday season.

There was like a general 10-15% off coupon floating around that got the price that low. It worked for several items other than the PS4 Pro. Let's not act like it was an all around price drop for the holidays. You're dreaming if you think the Pro will be $300 this year.

Interesting stuff. It makes me wonder how improved Halo 5 will play with this additional power. Let alone future game releases that can make additional uses over the non scorpio Xbox One version.

Is the Scorpio more powerful than the PRO? Yes, slightly.
Will the games on Scorpio run and look better than the PRO? Probably not.
So much salt.

Looks like 2 HDMI ports on the motherboard. If that's still for an HDMI In and an HDMI Out like current Xbox One models, then a Scorpio upgrade is back on the table for me.

Article confirms HDMI in remains. Now they need to add a mic to the box, and we're all set for media features.

Seems pretty obvious. It makes the Pro look even more half-assed.

Aren't there rumours about a new PS4 design this year too? Not sure if they were debunked, but a cheaper PS4 Pro model launching alongside Scorpio would be very interesting...

Cheaper PS4 Pro with UHD drive at 299$ would be nice

Wouldn't upgrade from my current PS4 Pro, still happy with 1080p gaming

Fury-X levels of performance sounds promising. I have a regular Fury and that thing hits 4K/30fps comfortably with recent releases @ higher settings.

Is it weird that I'm really considering this even though I have a PC with 2 x 1080's SC? Do I have a problem?

Not weird at all.

I have an xbox one S, PS4 Pro, PC with an 1080 Ti.

I'm still getting this.

Then again, I get everything, so not really into the whole console warrior bullshit that we see here so often.

Not trying to bash the game.. But is Forza really a system seller? The racing audience is so small comparatively to any other genre imo.

Isnt GT one of the best selling games on PS?

Im not sure what Forza sales are, but considering they release each year I am guessing they are strong

is this more powerful than the switch?

About 10% more powerful, don't expect any differences when it comes to third parties.

ok without the fanboyism in this thread because believe me its there, how much more powerful is the scorpio compared to the OG ps4, and then the PS4 Pro. I read the specs and literally it means nothing to me, thanks :)

Specs are as rumored for the most part; Zen dreamers, lol..

See you at E3 with some games.. I have powerful hardware (PS Pro, 1070 laptop)
Specs are nice, but show me something I can't play on Win 10.

is this more powerful than the switch?

This...

Also wondering if my 1080ti can play Minecraft...

Dude the start is the most hardware stressing part in a racing game.

It's a technical showcase.
It was the only 1080p/60 game for the original Xbox one and will probably be the only 4k/60 game for Scorpio at launch.

Pleased. So, anyone with some insight, is the custom direct X12 chip thing (I don't know how to call it, sorry) impressive from an engineering perspective? Anything similar out there?

It's undoubtedly more powerful than the Pro, but it is releasing a year later. This extra year has clearly allowed them to use better components and perform more optimization. But I wouldn't really compare the two - if Scorpio had to release at the same time as the Pro did, I'm sure the specs would look a lot different.

I'm chuckling at some of the comments. Full circle. The advantage downplayed at the beginning of the gen by one camp and pressed on by the other camp. Now the roles are reversed with the downplay and press.

E3 is going to be interesting.

while that is certainly true, Scorpio vs. PS4 Pro is a fight of "better execution" vs. "better timing" and possibly "better pricing".

I'm still not sure how big the niche is that cares all that much about the former. :/

My post brought up the post said it's "just" Jaguar. It's not just jaguar. It's a custom CPU based off Jaguar.

AMD won't customise the arctitechture, it'll be MS.
Also just so you know all those consoles have been custom Jaguar to a degree because no 8-core Jaguar exist!

With Xbox-One the customisation done wasn't huge and I don't expect it to be different with Scorpio.

Looks like a great system. Now just need to see the price on it. I'm not worried about the design of the box because Microsoft has been pretty good as of late when it comes to hardware design. Was a good idea to reveal it now leading into E3.

Did you miss this?
Even I don't have infinite patience. We are talking about more than a decade here.

Also, some posts here make the AF thing sound like an engineering accomplishment -- it's not, it's purely a policy decision which could have been made in 2006.

I never said anything about not criticizing something that is broken, I am all for that and don't think it happens enough...

I never said that you always give a pass either. But you are more lenient in a lot of ways and it comes from your heart because you want this genre that you love to succeed.

I was talking about giving praise where it is due when those that you are criticizing finally take steps in the right direction. To let them know that you approve and that they are on the right path. I feel that for those of us that harshly criticize where it is necessary it is important that we do this to show that we aren't just out to burn them. But that we want success and prosperity in this industry for everyone, especially the consumers.

So once again we have a console screaming that it's the most powerful thing in the world, yet we're currently going through a generation of these high powered machines that aside from a handful of titles, haven't really shown us anything new or even used this tech to create some fantastic gameplay details other than making the games look even more shiny, which seems to be the direction the industry keeps going in.

Honestly, sick to death with it. Let's wait and see what all this power does for the next Halo and Gears of War outside of graphics, because the previous iterations of those games done nothing new, outside of looking nicer, that the previous generation could have done.

To even use all the power they are talking about, once again, development costs will go up, games will take longer to make and microsoft's internal studios (what's left of them) will be put under even more pressure.

This is the wrong direction people.

I still find it curious that Microsoft decided on massaging the Cat cores for another round. AMD themselves declined to continue down that path for themselves after Jaguar at 28nm. On the surface, this seems like the lowest ROI path for MS. If it's simply a shrunk and upclocked Jag, it'll be a major bottleneck. The "custom" tag thrown on this hints at some architectural tweaks, which certainly wouldn't come cheap. From what I can remember, Jaguar was a fairly well rounded chip, but perhaps they saw some low hanging fruit for a modest tick in IPC. That said, even a simple die shrink of Excavator would likely outperform this "Super Cat". Moving further up the food chain, Zen is already sitting there waiting at 14nm with proven megaton performance.
