Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

Spirited

Mine is pretty and pink
Microsoft is playing 4D chess with playstation here. I wonder if the pricepoint will be the "checkmate" so to say.

But as always 200 or bust

Is the Scorpio more powerful than the PRO? Yes, slightly.
Will the games on Scorpio run and look better than the PRO? Probably not.
Of course they will. Why shouldn't they?

Whether or not they look better in ways that are easily noticeable by the mainstream customer is a different question, but there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they will look better.

Seems pretty obvious. It makes the Pro look even more half-assed.

You mean, aside from specs? Because I don't see how coming out a year earlier doesn't come with its own advantages (and makes the Pro half assed?). It's not like system wide downsampling couldn't be added to the Pro (like boost mode) way before Scorpio launches this fall.

One is almost swept away with the hype. It does sound like it'll be capable hardware.
But then I remember the other half of the equation. For the indefinite future, whatever Microsoft games I'm interested in, I'll be able to play on my XB1 or PC.

I'm not averse to the idea of spending the occasional $500 on making games run and look better. But...you know, continuing to do that on PC seems like a better idea to me.
I might go for it if there's a decent trade-in program for ye olde Xbone.

Wait...only slightly? I'm not a tech guy but the difference in ram and gpu lead me to believe the difference would be significant.

Yep. The 43% compute advantage is not even taking into account the RAM and Bandwidth improvements, which are pretty massive. Not sure if it was even including the CPU advantage. This could have easily been considered the PS4 Pro of the PS4 Pro.

So salty my boy Lynch is going to the Raiders. Of all teams. At least it's not New England.

Seems like good stuff, but now it needs games, new fresh IPs, lots of it. Scropio is ntohing without a good lineup for 2017. Forza, Gears and Halo ain't gonna cut it, for me at least.

I do have a gaming PC, so perhaps I don't need one anyway.

Agreed, but Forza is the only thing you'll be getting this year, at least for mainline titles.
Halo 6 will probably be next year, Gears 5 probably year after that.

This year it's Crackdown 3, Sea of Thieves, State of Decay 2 as the big hitters. Maybe some indies, Halo 3 Anniversary type thing and other similar surprises. Unless they have something big brewing, but again, I doubt that too.

ok without the fanboyism in this thread because believe me its there, how much more powerful is the scorpio compared to the OG ps4, and then the PS4 Pro. I read the specs and literally it means nothing to me, thanks :)

3-4x but you can't do an exact 1:1 comparison. It's powerful.

It sounds like MS did their homework more than Sony did in the upgrade path. I'm not even referring to the better specs, jut in the way the hardware is used and how it will benefit existing titles and 1080p users.

They also had a year longer, what surprised me is there is nothing in the specs that could not of been done last year when the pro came out.

I was hoping MS were waiting until end of 2017 to include some new tech like zen or vega.

So if i buy this console with Destiny 2, i can switch from xbox scorpio to pc ?is that how the play anywhere thing works? Just need 1 copy and i get to play on xbox or pc? Also no mentions of SSD full support...

Not trying to bash the game.. But is Forza really a system seller? The racing audience is so small comparatively to any other genre imo.

Not as much of a system seller Gran Turismo is but it's more consistent. There are more Forza releases that are 1-2 million sellers. While GT sells more, the lulls of absence are a lot longer.

Yup, the whole downsampling thing and 16x AF should have been standard on the pro as well.

I'm steel leery about it being able to do 4K. All we got here was a screenshot of Forza 3 saying it was 4k.. and by the way he was wording it didn't' sound like it was native 4K but some upconversion taking place?

Even if Forza 3 gets up to 4K I'm doubtful majority of games will be able to pump at at that resolution.

I mean, a 980ti at the minimum, and a 1080ti to be happy, with everything maxed is what's going to get you 4K these days and both those cards cost more than the whole system alone..

What planet are you from? Guys this trolling has to stop.

you could say it. But how long do you think this gen will last? I think in 2 years and PS5 + next gen will be here.

And MS will be stuck with a johnny come lately console that's now old again. Not that XboxOne isn't already not catching fire.

It needs exclusives.

Well, I kinda know.

It's helpful, absolutely. No doubt about that.

Can you help me understand if what they said about the 11 instructions from the thousand is actually something good or just a different way to handle the situation with the same results?

Memory will be nice to work with everything else is not that impressive. That amount and access spied will be sweet for just dumping content into instead of disc reading. Visuals likely be slightly better than the the PS4Pro.

Part of me really thought MS was gonna pull out all the stops. Guess games will have to do all the heavy lifting. Very curious to see how games next summer run on og X1 since they decided to keep them compatible.

Im in for 399. 'Enthusiast's' machine doesnt make sense when no one is buying the orignal to begin with.

Eat the extra and get units out there.

That answer was too serious for that post, haha.

while that is certainly true, Scorpio vs. PS4 Pro is a fight of "better execution" vs. "better timing" and possibly "better pricing".

I'm still not sure how big the niche is that cares all that much about the former. :/

For me the Pro was too little and too early. Now it is an after thought and Scorpio is arriving about right on time with the right specs.

I sincerely doubt Red Dead is running at native 4k on scorpion, most likely checkerboxed.

This is Rockstar remember, theyre games require quite the heavy hardware

As others have mentioned - these specs are all interesting but it doesn't mean anything until they tell us the price. If its over $400 they're going to have an uphill battle. I think $400 is the sweet spot here.

Its going to be interesting what will look better, the best looking PS4 games on pro using checkerboard rendering (downsampled) or best looking xobxone games in native 4K (downsampled).

Imo, all the resources should be spend to make upcoming games look fantastic in 1080p, that whole 4K thing is a waste at the moment.

Destiny might be the wrong example. I'm convinced that PC will be it's own platform for Destiny on Bungie's end.

So maybe yeah, you only have to buy Destiny 2 once, but your accounts wont be 'shared' between Xbox and PC.

I actually want to see games before i get excited, just sold my Xbox One S i was super underwhelmed by the library, not my cup of tea I guess...

Some of the salt is incredible.

DF seems excited.

But people still throwing shade equating the CPU customization to MS ridiculous cloud comments circa 2013.

I have a feeling that if this was the PS4 Pro specs announcement, the internet would have erupted into thunderous applause.

But since it's Xbox it's just kinda meh.

I like what I saw from the videos. It's more than just about the 6tf. The bandwidth and the frequency and that dx12 in the hardware thing is very impressive. Also the overhead looks good too. That thing about the dx12 in hardware improving something from 1000s to just 11 sounds impressive but I didn't understand it :D

For all of my prior concerns about DF being qualified enough to cover this, the coverage seems pretty well written and well, balanced :)

If it has any decent exclusive games I'd be tempted, if only there was enough space under my TV for yet another box. Any thoughts on size?

If they really manage to enhance all XBO software, in some way, on Scorpio, there has to be at least some emulation involved right? XBO games were never designed to run on Scorpio.

Should be 399 right guys?
Its not that more powerful then PRO and release a whole year later.
And PRO will probably be 350 when this comes out.

Variable refresh being included in a console is pretty fucking wild. Didn't expect to see that anytime soon.

Wonder what kind of heat this is going to put on Nvidia with G-sync.

GPU wise Scorpio is 4.5x the Xbox One, 3.2x the base PS4, and about 40% faster than the PS4 Pro

CPU clock is a little bit faster than the PS4 Pro's with some added customizations to reduce workload. Clock speed is about 40% faster than the base PS4.

It also has the most RAM available to games and a lot more bandwidth than any of the other consoles.

Dude, I have no idea what the hell people are thinking. It's so funny to read shit like that.

lol Oakland fans need something after losing their team to Las Vegas.

Microsoft being located in Seattle are big fans of Seahawks. Obviously, Xbox Scorpio was inspired by Beast Mode. It's only logical xD

I will buy at $500. Far less concerned with how many others join me.
