Digital Foundry: Xbox Scorpio

zENfKgE.jpg

This is some good design. Like look at the power supply. It has it's own enclosure to isolate the heat from the rest of the components. Look at the HDD caddy, and the disk drive. Now look at the PS4 Pro.

Now I'm not saying the Ps4 Pro isn't a great design, because it is, but I want to make another point. The Ps4 Pro is built to be cheap and compact. The picture of Scorpio screams premium build quality. If people were wondering why this thing might be more than $399, then this might be the answer along with the extra RAM, vapor cooler, and I'm assuming bigger SOC. I would also bet the Scorpio comes with a 2TB or bigger drive at least at launch. It might have cheaper versions later like the XBox One S.

Wow we're calling Digital Foundry sell outs now?

It's called being a fanboy/crybaby.

They were on point with 360/PS3 stuff. They have been on point with X1/X1S/PS4/PS4P.

They'll be just as accurate with everything else. Taking charge of a hardware reveal and what they were given is simply that. They'll continue to break things down and do comparisons that show advantages and disadvantages just like always.

Thankfully those people are few.

People here aren't stupid. Skepticism with whatever you read is fine - you should always be a bit skeptical of the world. But that doesn't mean we're being fed lies.

These write ups are just normal for a preview of anything, software or hardware. He is documenting what they have showed him. And yes, he happens to like it...is that not allowed? He has been positive about other products in the past, many of which were not MS-made.

Were you skeptical when people were positive of the PS4 or PS4 Pro's reveals? Or, for that matter, when people were positive about any system reveal?

In attempting to deflect discussions of scorpio still using Jaguar cores, they vaguely proclaim customisations that have already confused people into thinking the CPU itself has built in DX12 implementation.

I don't like how it uses a blower fan.

It's going to be noisy when it runs very hot.

Have they not heard about other liquids?

I've only used liquid cooling on a CNC router, so for most people no. Water is a very cheap source, but it does introduce problems.

Looks like the Fujitsu patented design in the article I mentioned earlier uses something else.

IDev be surprised if the didn't have a 1tb version at launch.

And that would be fine. Just call it what it is: a paid advertisement. Put a disclaimer at the top telling us how Microsoft funded the trip and wined and dined DF (or whatever the arrangement was to secure this "exclusive") and everyone can adjust their expectations accordingly for what's to come.

Lol

I'm just here to watch the meltdowns of fanboys.

Looking forward to putting a Scorpio next to my Ps4 Pro this fall.

He literally starts the video and the article saying as much... did you watch it?

Holy shit. You guys are digging hard as fuck to make something sound negative.

They've been paid Sony shills up to this point in the generation according to a lot of Xbox fans...

It's the fanboy cycle man...

PS3 vs 360
- years of inferior multiplats on the PS3

- MS fans laughing and pointing fingers, saying "look at digital foundry!"

- Sony fans downplaying differences in multiplats..look at our Blu-ray player...cell processor! look at our exclusives..

PS4 vs Xbone
-PS4 is more powerful, Sony fans rejoice after a whole generation of being annoyed...laughing, pointing fingers, saying look at digital foundry!

- MS fans downplaying differences...look at our UHD player...secret sauce!...

Then the Pro came along and Sony fans REALLY got to point fingers for a year...now it's MS fans' turn again for a few years...

That's why I've just been sitting back and reading everything and chuckling up to this point...the same people all over twitter, and GAF and everywhere else talking about how the Pro is all of a sudden some garbage, half assed piece of trash hardware, were the same ones early in this gen talking about how power wasn't everything..yadda yadda...

Everyone on both sides feels the need to justify their brand loyalty...

Is there liquid in there and does it help cool the SOC? What the hell else are they supposed to call it?

Calling a vapor chamber liquid cooling is a massive stretch. It's basically a fancy heat pipe with a very small amount of liquid that evaporates and recondences to draw heat away from the SOC. Nobody who's familiar with PC component cooling would refer to it as liquid cooling. There's no pump, radiator, or circulation like there is in an actual closed loop liquid cooling system. It's like calling yourself a landscaper on your resume because you raked your neighbor's leaves once.

That's not to say it isn't effective, but calling it liquid cooling is extremely misleading and pretty typical of MS in the way they target people who aren't very knowledgeable about hardware. Remember the whole "every game is 1080p because it's upscale" crap?

Wait wait wait... I listed this on low end $500 but wouldn't be shocked to see $600...

Watercooling?
$600 I'm calling

Sigh....

Again, it's not watercooling. It's a vapor chamber. It's a cheap and effective cooling solution, but it's not water cooling.

Ps4 Pro owners are laughing now at future Scorpio customers. Yes, we have almost the same specs for a long time now. Just wait for PS5 or stick with tablet CPU for 4k gaming in Scorpio.

TheLastword would disagree with that.

I'm a PS4 Pro owner and your post is embarrassing. Just stop while you can still post.

This person has a long future on the forum.

Welcome well thought out and detailed poster

I want to let you know you're a loser for using a throw away account to make that post ;). May the mods find out your main account (if it exists)..haha. Be proud.

In attempting to deflect discussions of scorpio still using Jaguar cores, they vaguely proclaim customisations that have already confused people into thinking the CPU itself has built in DX12 implementation.

Do they?

Here's a direct quote from the article:

However, potentially the most exciting aspect surrounding the CPU revamp doesn't actually relate to the processor blocks at all, but rather to the GPU command processor - the piece of hardware that receives instructions from the CPU, piping them through to the graphics core.

"We essentially moved Direct3D 12," says Goossen. "We built that into the command processor of the GPU and what that means is that, for all the high frequency API invocations that the games do, they'll all natively implemented in the logic of the command processor - and what this means is that our communication from the game to the GPU is super-efficient."

Processing draw calls - effectively telling the graphics hardware what to draw - is one of the most important tasks the CPU carries out. It can suck up a lot of processor resources, a pipeline that traditionally takes thousands - perhaps hundreds of thousands - of CPU instructions. With Scorpio's hardware offload, any draw call can be executed with just 11 instructions, and just nine for a state change.

"It's a massive win for us and for the developers who've adopted D3D12 on Xbox, they've told us they've been able to cut their CPU rendering overhead by half, which is pretty amazing because now the driver portion of that is such a tiny fraction," adds Goossen.

People might be confused on these details, but I don't know if it's DF's fault.

Beautiful

I don't know anything about PS4 Pro. If the author did the same shit in the past I didn't notice. I don't see how prior precedent fixes anything. Unless you mean to say it's par for the course for DF and I've set my expectations too high?

If you think the way DF does things is below your standard for you and you need something with higher bar, I have bad news for you.

BTW, you will be the lone guy in the line complaining about DF around here. Richard is the gold standard for tech reporting for console gaming.

Yeah the part i am most intrigued about is the command block customizations with dx12 hardcoded.

50% gains in efficiency is huge. Need more details.

Edit: command blocks on gpu not cpu

Lmao, I don't know why this news is doing this to people but it's certainly entertaining.

i'm pretty hyped for scorpio. pro owner here. but hope the price point is very competitive.
being without a 360 anymore, i wouldn't mind looking back at the 360 titles and suped up x1 titles.
