Niitsuma over cut and suggested characters in (Ultimate) Marvel vs Capcom 3

Oh right, that. That bit of trivia still doesn't serve as a particularly strong justification for why he NEEDS to be in, particularly with the redundancy issue I already brought up.

Some things are just tradition! The problem wasn't that there was too much crossover between Ryu and Akuma, but that Ryu just had nothing to offer.

That he didn't, even after attempting to fix that in UMvC3 (as I said). There was no real point in picking him over Akuma. Yet at the same time, there was no way Capcom were going to make one of these games and just not include Ryu in it.

I was one of those voices that begged for Phoenix Wright inclusion.

Sometimes dreams do come true...and I ended up not liking the game much anyways. I still was around to stream monster those first few EVO years though!

The roster we could have had would've been great. It shouldn't be all about popular characters. Niche characters should have a very strong consideration because they're NEW to a lot of people. Fresh. Interesting. It might make people seek out the games/comics they were in. Spark some renewed interest.

I can take or leave Akuma but I gladly would've taken Gill over C. Viper.

Or Juri.
In all likeliness, they probably would've gone with Juri instead if they had started development much later (vanilla MvC3 was in development around the same time as the console versions of vanilla SFIV, IIRC). I'd be very surprised if she doesn't show up in MvC:I.

Still hurts seeing Gene not making the cut, I hope Capcom remembers God Hand enough to put him in MvC:I. But I'm actually gutted to hear Doc Ock was more than just a concept, that sucks to hear he got cut out.

It's insane that any Mega Man wasn't even considered.

It seems to me that they internally considered Zero to be the game's Mega Man.

Ryota Niitsuma: I assume you're talking about the original Mega Man. There was a Mega Man slot for this game - we had room for a character from that series. But when it came to the propriety of that character being in a fighting game, Mega Man has some problems.

If we were to adapt the original Mega Man character into a fighting game he would have to have a lot more extra moves and abilities, and that would then create a different Mega Man entirely. You couldn't retain his original character as he is. So we looked into other Mega Mans, and decided that Zero had the best list of moves already in existence when it comes to fitting into a fighting game.

The fact that they thought that Zero (The X incarnation, not his MMZ self) was a Mega Man was extremely bizarre to me considering Niitsuma also produced TVC, a game that had Zero and Volnutt, who is, you know, an actual Mega Man.

TVC was a game with about 26 characters and Mega Man had three different characters, and as far as I recall, no one had a heart attack there. But apparently for UMVC3, a game with 50 characters, three MM characters was too much. Okay.

Yeah, absolutely. I got the vibe they went with C. Viper because they were trying to treat her as the "main" newcomer of SFIV, but she ended up being received pretty lukewarmly while Juri (who came later) broke out massively. Just goes to show the inherent risks of using co-developed characters like that, before you get a chance to really gauge how people'll respond to them.

This is exactly why I found MVC3's roster to be so sterile compared to MVC1 and 2. It sounds like basically all the interesting characters are the ones who didn't get in. None of the colourful cult favourites like Hayato, Jin, B.B. Hood, Ruby Heart or CapCom that made those games feel so special and unique.

Except Ammy, I'm thankful they added her.

It seems to me that they internally considered Zero to be the game's Mega Man.

I always found Niitsuma's answer in this interview to be completely asinine. He talks about how hard it is to make a moveset for Mega Man. When not only, as you say, was he in TVC, but he was also in MVC 1 and 2. The whole situation regarding Mega Man's absence is just dumb, dumb, dumb.

The problem is there, I think, is that Mega Man kinda had a really boring moveset in MVC1 and 2, and Niitsuma and the UMVC3 team were really hellbent on everyone being super unique and different from each other. Now, they could of given him an all new moveset like what they did with Roll in TVC, but they just...didn't.

Another thing I keep hearing is that they didn't want both Arthur and Mega Man in the same game, I guess because they're both short retro jump and shoot kinda characters. This makes me wonder if Arthur will make it back to Infinite, considering X is in and even has his own special armor system which is somewhat similar to Arthur's thing in UMVC3.

It then just kinda takes me back to how then a couple years later, Mega Man shows up in Smash Bros. and he has a moveset that's both unique and completely authentic to the original games. It legitimately is just like Niitsuma and co. couldn't be bothered. Honestly I feel like Mega Man's absence wouldn't bug me as much if Zero was the only representative. But then having Zero and Tron Bonne with no Mega Man, the hole it leaves is just too conspicuous.

I guess we'll see for Arthur in Infinite. If I had to choose I'd go with Mega Man but that's just me personally.

Ah. That moment in time when Marvel was DEMANDING more Richard Rider Nova, instead of benching him for years, sidelining him in a new book, then cancelling that book 7 issues in.

I miss that golden era. At least I'll always have Annihilation.

Being Rogue is suffering. It was bad enough when the poor girl was getting cofused with an animorphic bat.

Well, Power Stone predates Sonic Adventure 2 by two years, so technically the Marvel southern belle was being mixed up with the dancing fortune teller before she was confused with the bat-like jewel thief. :)

Vergil: When we gathered data from our fans in Japan, he was way more requested than we ever expected. The decider for us was when we were at Tokyo Game Show, and we have several Vergil cosplayers come up to us and say "Put Vergil in, please!"
oh my god

thank you niitsuma

Reasons like "no one outside Japan would recognize them" baffle me, when its clear they never even considered asking. -shrug- some things will never change.

"Mega Man" wasn't in TvC, and his moveset in the earlier MvC games was pretty boring and uninspired.

I dunno why they couldn't just overhaul him though. Roll was actually fun to play in TvC.

They should be though. It's a mistake to ignore them.
All because of the Marvel/FOX issues. At least, they are working things out and seem to have a "good" relationship as of later.

ResurrXtion has lead up to like 8 X-Men comics (looking forward to Astonishing), Legion was well received by critics and Gifted is coming.

Hopefully they keep doing things together.

The lack of (sexy) girls on the roster stopped me from buying UMvC3. I remember being pretty suprized when I saw Ultimate only had male characters in the update. I had no idea who Arieta was before seeing this news, but if either her or Psylocke made the cut, I'd have bought the game.
Vanilla MvC3's online was the greatest disappointment for me last generation too, which didnt encourage me to splash out again for the update either.

150 female characters and not a single one made the cut? LOL Capcom

Cool to hear Nina almost made the final cut (which suggests she has a good shot of getting into Infinite) but boo-urns at using BoF1 Nina instead of BoF2 Nina.

So basically we should spam the official Twitters accounts with suggestions and poll results in the hopes they will take note and be persuaded. Because some of these sound very arbitrary.

UMvC3 could have been amazing, though. MMX, Gene, Nina, etc. It would have been the perfect roster for me, at least on the Capcom side, and Marvel sans female characters.

At that point Marvel was probably under the impression that Nova was gonna be in Guardians and was probably getting his own movie after.

Welp, at least they were considered at some point, though the lame excuses are another thing.

I want Daredevil (who has a high chance being included this time around) and Psylocke, she has appeared constantly in comics since Uncanny X-Force and now Astonishibg X-Men, Marvel CoC mobile game and her inclussion on Apocalypse (even though she was wasted as a character)

I think the cuts were mostly smart except for Rogue, Psylocke and all the ones where they decided a character would be too similar to another. I think the reasoning behind cutting those characters was super dumb.

While Nina would have been great, if it's not the BOF3 one it's kind of eh.

Katt would have been cool too, could have the Shin transformation as her super.

"We added this Inhuman cuz it reminded us of a certain X-Men character and we thought it would be a nice nod to it."
That would be a slap on the face to he fans and add more wood to he fire about the FOX ban. Don't really see it as a good idea for Marvel themselves.
