Very impressive The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sales. It had an even greater launch than The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

It has also surpassed by now The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, which had shipped 3.99 million units as of December 2014.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Nintendo Switch - 2.76 million
Nintendo Wii U - 1.08 million

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess

Nintendo Wii - 2.47 million
GameCube < 1 million

Celine's thread had SS at 3.67m as of Dec 2014?

They will bring a graph and say that BOTW was the exception, look at the general tendency, yada yada

10m seems A LOT though. Not sure it can reach that, but I sure would like it does.
looking at the line up, with rumors like Pokemon Star and Smash 4 port, I'd be surprised if the console wouldn't make it to 10 million lol

Reuters says the Zelda figures are life to date, not constrained by the end of first fiscal year on March 31st.

While I agree that it can get there, the situation you are describing is EXACTLY like Twilight Princess - which was both on the sold-out Wii and the gamecube.

I'd say the DLC, the new open world gameplay and the way BotW seems to connect o todays social media audience is what gives it a higher potential, not the launch situation.

Twilight Princess came pretty close though, and I don't think it's nearly as appealing a title for the general consumer as Breath of the Wild is. TP wasn't selling Wiis all by itself, BotW is.

I could see it become GTA5 on PS4/Xbox one, everyone pick up a copy when they buy Switch.

Not really. People picking up a switch later in the year/coming years might be interested in other games then. That GTA crowd is also way different and more appealing to the masses.

wii u BOTW did better than i expected. but then again, i should've expected it considering there's millions of Wii Us out there and the console isn't technically dead yet

mario maker did pretty good too, 3DS version seemed like an afterthought at the time

Thanks just saw that in the pdf as well.

The sales volume for hardware and software during this period reached 2.74 million units and 5.46 million units respectively

Does this mean the 2.74 million is shipped too like Zelda or actual sales?

Also, when they say hardware, do they only mean the Switch, or does that include the other hardware accessories as well?

Pokémon games have very long legs too so I wouldn't be surprised to see Sun/Moon's LTD eclipse (HAHAHAHA) that of X/Y's by the end of 2017.

I just wonder now whether they'll do a Diamond and Pearl remake on 3DS or on the Switch.

It should easily outsell X/Y, maybe it could even outsell Diamond/Pearl this year (17.67 or so million).

It all depends on when the remake would launch. If it launches this year, it'll be on 3DS (and probably on Switch as well), but any later and I expect them to have transitioned over to Switch already, with maybe a cross-gen release if it comes in 2018.

It's sold as in "sold to retailers".

Do they ever mention these?

There's a note on page 14 of the earnings release that mentions accessories, where the accessory income is encapsulated in the total hardware revenue. A similar statement is not given when they talk about hardware numbers, so logic dictates here that accessories are not included in the sales numbers for Switch hardware.

Wouldn't that just be Treehouse, just more of it?

Imagine what a huge deal an official Nintendo channel with Let's Plays, shows, cartoons would be. Nintendo TV. Parents trust Nintendo and I'm sure they'd be totally fine with their kids watching Nintendo ads 24/7 on YouTube. Nintendo doesn't really need this tbf, since YouTubers already do the job for them but with a channel like this they could get all the YouTube profits for themselves and at the same time establish a new media approach.

But again, that would mean war with YouTubers so who knows.

Treehouse is nothing like that.

There were also 2.74M Switch sold, so Zelda has an Attach rate of what? 101%?
Shipped, there are country where the switch isn't sold out and isn't selling so well like here in italy where the switch games doesn't even chart at the console launch.

These numbers are truly great! Together with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey Nintendo will most definitely earn some cash this year!
Hopefully this will result in Nintendo becoming more comfortable with taking some risks - like a new Metroid for the Switch, since now they can afford to lose some money, if the sales won't be successful.

Ok.

I'm curious to know how much their accessories sold without doing a lot of maths. I imagine the Switch sold a ton on launch day as I've seen, read and heard a lot of people buying at least extra joycons, controller, charging grip, etc.

Shipped/sold to retailers

As an example, it states Shipped 600.000 for Japan.
We have really accurate week-by-week numbers for japan, and at the end of march they sold 565.013 to consumers according to media create, a week later 606.206

So their sold to retailers seems to fit perfectly with what we know, as the system has been selling out week after week in japan (and still is).

They rarely give those numbers, unless for a very specific type of accessory that was super succesfull (think Wii Fit balance board)

Still amazed Kirby hit the million mark, but then again Kirby has always been Nintendo's most reliable franchise. The games might not be masterpieces but they're always good, the games won't be best sellers but they'll always reach a modest amount of sales.

Awesome numbers so far. Went back-and-forth probably a hundred times about buying one at launch, but Zelda made it so worth it. Looks like plenty of others felt the same.

Side note: I read all of TLZ's posts in Matt Berry's amazing voice and laugh every time.

Thanks.

Their 10 million forecast seems low but I guess they know the craze would die down a bit during the summer then pick up closer to Christmas. I'd still hope they make and ship more, something closer to 15 million.

Haha. Why thank you sir.

Pkemon B/W and D/P shipped 40K this FY

wat

Where? Is this one of those limited runs ordered in bulk by some random seller who then goes and sells them at inflated prices? Like what supposedly happened with that random reprint of Fire Emblem Wii? Or the GameStop reprint of MPT?

True, as people have mentioned before, it's a sound business strategy to underpromise and overdeliver. If we believe WSJ, they are planning to produce 16 million units for this fiscal year, so they could potentially sell that much during this fiscal year, regardless of their forecast.

It seems conservative but gives them upwards potential.

Ie the summer: for japan the opposite is true - splatoon 2 is a huge phenomenon and they will likely sell every switch they can produce when it launches this summer.

Treehouse is nothing like that.

At some level I think it would help with their more narrative driven games. Like, they have to know that games are ultimately still an expensive hobby - Pokemon Go proved as much given how many people played it vs how many people have bought Sun/Moon, even with the associated bump.

Yet by the same principle, they have to know how free content can stoke people's interest for a product. How it can expose people to and make them engage with a brand where they otherwise would not. Such a thing can turn people into Zelda fans even if they have never touched a Zelda game, and that may encourage to get a Zelda game if/when they do have the money.

But ultimately, that's all speculative, while I'm sure Nintendo will be happy enough with the current course as is, with these financial results.

I wonder if Nintendo will end up doing a rerelease of Zelda. I know that they don't usually do GotY editions but New Super Luigi U wasn't that long ago and it did include the original game if I recall correctly.

A GotY edition of Zelda next year (with all the season pass DLC on disc) could easily carry that game over 10 million copies sold.

So yea; I think Nintendo did about as I would have expected or better on all fronts in the dark prior to switch launch.

Except Zelda. Having played the game, and seeing what it is doing first hand (my sister skipped a party on a sat night to play it, she never has done that ever with a game), it is the rocking next gen experience Nintendo could have only dreamed of, and I think it will remain evergreen where no other zelda has succeeded possibly.

Nintendo should produce a YouTube channel with just Mario Party Games being played. Monetize the heck out of it. Easy ¥¥¥¥. Just look at those views.
https://youtu.be/ILJmufDh-Mg

I don't understand the world anymore. How does this random-ass vid get 100+ mil views? Maybe parents play this for their kids or something? Weird.

Anyway, those Zelda sales are amazing. 4 million and counting and I'm betting the legs will be impressive too. In a year from now people eventually getting a Switch will still buy Zelda for it.
