[Polygon] Microsoft, give consumers the FPS counter on the front of the Xbox Scorpio

I don't think you understand the meaning of the term if you think my post was bitching up a storm.
I mean people will bitch a storm. That's all they do. Putting a timer for luxury reasons and for their own convenience is one of zillions of things that will cause bitching.

It should be projected onto the ceiling! Make it happen MS!
Hahaaa awesome! XD

Seriously though, I'd love an fps counter of any type, I always have it overlayed on my PC anyway so I'm used to it. Give me an fps counter and a video settings menu to tweak and disable some stuff I don't need. Day 1.

I see your point but why add one more thing that gamers can negatively obsess over?

Because ancient clock technology is going to break bank for the richest company in the world.

When consoles sell in the millions, even a few pennies add up.

Maybe if I was fifteen this would seem totally rad, but no thanks. I don't want some kind of LCD or LED read out of performance stats on the front of my video game console.

This would mean nothing to the average player anyway. A bit of a daft idea. Maybe if you're going to put a display on the console, let it show what disc is in the system when its in sleep mode so you know whether or not to turn it on by pressing Eject, or whether the game you want to play is currently in.

Could also be useful to display controller battery levels though...

I understand this is more about form than function. Because if you want a framerate counter as a user, you'd probably rather have a software solution.
When playing a game, you are looking at the screen, not the console. Since you would only be looking at this information when you're not actively playing a game, there is no need for a little physical display to always show this information, at a distance that you might not be able to read it. This screen/hardware would also add cost.

Software could just log min, max, avg, frametimes, torn frames, curves, offer various sorting methods, diagrams and whatnot. You access it when you want to look at it. Could also offer an overlay, because why not.

As for form, I feel like you would eventually grow out of love with this stupid sexy display.

When I look at images of the XDK, sure it looks real slick for a development kit, but what truly catches my eye is them USB ports on the front. If the Scorpio doesn't have those...
There being no USB on the front, one on the side and who knows how many on the back, is completely baffling. USB ports are infamous for their 50/50 wrong-way insertion rejection. Users don't need to also worry about sideways-finagling trying to feel where the port even is.

At first I thought it was an option to display fps on the screen and that it was a bad idea.

Now that I understand what it is I think it's a bad idea.

No change of mind. :)

EDIT:
That said, I like the display on the design side, but I guess how can it be useful... I can barely see my PS4 from where it is under my tv...

Please don´t design the scorpio to look like EXTREME GAMERZ GEAR™ in any shape or form.

No displays, no LEDs, no cutouts, no tribal tattoos.

That would be great.

The hardcore gamer is already buying a Scorpio on the promise of a stronger console alone. The average consumers doesn't know what frames per second really means. This is completely pointless.

I mean... what are you going to do when you drop below 30fps then? Nothing. What is the point.

Also, I'm sure developers struggling to hit 30fps for 4k (and let's face it, this will happen) would love having a indicator of judgement sitting on the face of the console.

Far too much emphasis on framerate in all walks of gaming. It becomes more important than the actual game itself in places.

An optional FPS counter in software would be nice, and would give third party developers more incentive to think about the performance of their games.

At first I was really sold on the idea until I realized most games on this system will need Freesync or VRR to appear smooth.

If you are worried about saving money, you would be getting the Xbox One S instead of a beast machine. This console is designed for the obsessed and no one but the obsessed.

No, just no. Polygon, I love ya, but you are killing me here.

In the end, I would say 1% of people care about FPS (trully care). Really, when I think about playing Uncharted, Destiny, Halo 5 mp, etc, I don't ever think back "that was a good consistent 60fps." No, I remember the levels, the enemies, the combat, the mp games. FPS counting and consistent 60 or 30 is great and all and I prefer high fps, but never has a decision been made based on those. Why do I care to even see em, let along a regular person.

Just no.

I like the idea of a counter since it will get more people complaining about low frame rate games which should push devs to do a better job of hitting their targets. A software solution seems much more practicle though.

Fuck that noise. Give me a simple and premium looking console. I also never take the stickers off the front, don't @...

Start counting in millions of units....
An LCD screen, extra production time, development time... everything has a price... when you have a price goal to launch the damn thing, you need to start taking those things into consideration...

Well they've already used the extra production time and development time to make that DEV kit

Seriously though, it's satire guys. It's ridiculous satire and isn't really funny but it's still satire.

It's weird that I want the OLED screen on retail units, but not for FPS counting. I want Scorpio to have built-in mics ALA Amazon Echo for Cortana control. Use the screen to let me know when she starts listening. The whole "Xbox On" command still exists goddamnit. Just let me control my Xbox with my voice without needing Kinect.

It could also be used to display the time, but only if you used a weird button combination to set it up. For 99% of users it'll display as --:-- as a result, recapturing the VCR vibe that the OG Xbox One gave us.

yeah, but devkits are way more expensive to developers and doesn`t sell millions... so it's kind of a trade off...
In case of retail units, every penny counts...
