Kotaku: Mass Effect on hiatus, most BioWare Montreal staff now at Motive, still on MP

That's such a shame for an awesome IP. Deserved better than Andromeda. Hope it comes back strong whenever it returns.

Godammit, first Deus Ex now this. Pissed off that one decent (not amazing) entry was enough to both these franchises on ice.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
To be expected. EA was never going to keep going after spending 5 years on an utter turd like Andromeda. Now the people responsible will go back to making map packs while we await the full reboot in 10-15 years time.

H-honestly? I'm kinda ok with this, the ME on ice part. I loved the trilogy, but thought it should've ended there. Games industry needs to understand that not every franchise needs to be evergreen. Feel bad for all the staff though. :(

I just hate that this is the immediate response to criticism. Imagine if this had happened to CD Projekt Red after The Witcher 1.

I get that costs are involved, but Mass Effect isn't a soured name because of this. There are people that still respect the lore and the world and putting it "on ice" won't help the cause down the line. Didn't help Mirror's Edge.
Comparing the first game to the fourth entry is a terrible example

Is this another Dragon Age 2 scenario where they're gonna scrap the idea of these characters playing a major role across a trilogy?

I never played DA2 or DAI but I know Hawke was supposed to be the main character like Shepard was in Mass Effect.
Most likely. The "Andromeda" subseries name is tainted now.

Good call, let the franchise rest and put a real team on it when the time is right.

In a time when games like Witcher 3, Horizon and Zelda are coming. EA and Bioware really need to bring g their A game with a franchise like this.

I hope they are bearing this in mind for the next Dragon Age game.

Really sucks to hear despite the known issues ME: Andromeda had. Guess EA feels that the ME series is no longer useful with The Design coming from Edmonton.

Damn, harsh but not terribly surprising. Interesting to hear following EA's response to it during their investor call last night.

Well said they have fallen hard. This series deserves better.

ME:A was a bummer but there's still so much more you could do in that world

I just want another dev to try to do the big epic space opera. Considering how huge Star Wars and Star Trek are you'd think there would be a ton of them but in reality there's basically just ME and more Sim-heavy stuff like Eve/Stellaris/Elite.

Don't pass gaas, it is your Destiny!
EA has starwars now doesn't need mass effect any more. I feel bad, loved everything bioware has done since the 1st game I played (never winter nights). After playing ME:A I don't trust them any more. I've stalled out on the game (have to been over half way thru) and just can't stand the poor effort that went into it. This is coming from someone that has played all the console bio ware games thru multiple times (even dragon age 2).

Well that fucking sucks. It was my favorite series of last gen. Though I guess better this way than to continue the same quality as Andromeda...

This gen has been horrible for my gaming tastes. Worst gen ever.

Dead series now which is extremely sad.

Real lives are affected by this but at least we got some good memes out of making fun of it!

And yet EA said they were happy with the IP on the conference call to investors yesterday >_>
Have to say they act fast with these things =/

BioWare Montreal, a studio which had NEVER made a game, had no business making a game like Mass Effect.

Turning then once again into a support studio seems the right move.

As for the Mass Effect franchise.. It's sad and a shame that it's indefinitely on hold. Hopefully we'll see something from it again.

What that means for updates, support and shit which ME:A was supposed to have in the upcoming months?

I'm dreading what's going to happen to the next Dragon Age when it releases. It's (with Mass Effect prior to 3) the only franchise I really care about from them.

Fallout 4 and Skyrim didn't seem to do Bethesda any harm. Both were wildly more broken than Andromeda in terms of progression affecting bugs and both had far worse character animation.

Both those games are able to get away with it because they provide way more freedom to the player. You can pick basically anything, carry it or throw it, you can visit most places as in enter houses and such. You can also kill or steal from most if not every characters in the game.

Mass Effect is a pretty rigid game compared to those so of course people will expect it ton be mostly bug free.

This is an example of how stupid video game company executives are, most notably at big companies like EA- they think Mass Effect is this turnkey franchise that they can just throw resources at and watch the money roll in. They don't understand games, game creators, or what makes a great game franchise like Mass Effect.

Still happening

Last month, a number of BioWare Montreal employees were transferred to the studio EA Motive, also based in Montreal, to work on Star Wars Battlefront II. Those remaining at BioWare Montreal will help support BioWare's other games including the new intellectual property, code-named Dylan, which we expect the company to announce at E3. BioWare Montreal will also continue to patch and support Andromeda's multiplayer.

this quote should prob be in the OP too, people werent not really laid off, but transfered to other EA teams

Well atleast we have Dragon Age, nor sure how its gonna turn out with the lead writers for the past 2 games (DA2 was shit and is not counted) are gone.

Not shocking. Sucks, but im not suprised. They shouldn't have been in charge of a game like Andromeda anyway. Way too big of a game for a studio who only really helped out with games.

I bet we'll see a new Mass Effect before we see a new Deus Ex

EA running yet another accomplished studio into the ground. Why am I not surprised?
Let's be honest here, Bioware is just as much to blame aswell as they were the developer. This is the developer/brand whom dared write and honestly thought ME3's ending was perfect and let this go out.

Wonder what this means for Andromeda support actually, is it anticipated to get any DLC beyond the MP?
Can probably see it hitting some more significant sale prices soon also

It's crazy, despite my passion for Mass Effect, how little it matters in the context of EAs portfolio....

Yeah it's actually quite surprising when you think about it.

I think Nirolak has made this point a number of times, but even against other similar western RPGs in the market that aim for the same demo, Mass Effect hasn't performed as well as would be expected.
