How do the joy-cons connect to the Switch when in portable mode?

Because I'm not sure it does actually use bluetooth. Look at the following screen:

You can turn bluetooth off and still use the joycons. If you want to use the controllers wirelessly you need to turn bluetooth on.

I remember nintendo had a patent a while back about controllers that connect using IR at close range... could this be it?

If they DO connect using bluetooth.... then does that mean the menu option does nothing?

Discuss.

Folks have already reverse engineered this, it's a high speed serial link over 10 physical pins while connected to the system and bluetooth when disconnected.

Well well...I wasn't aware that there was an actual physical communications link between tne Joy-con and console unit. I thought it could be possible with the way the controllers click into place so satisfyingly, but since I never saw and any link - until now - or any other confirmation, I just assumed it to be some type of wireless communication.

I thought this too at first until it was pointed out to me not long after launch. I immediately went to look at my Joycons.

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
While Im here I have another question:

Does the Switch charge at the same speed if the Joycons are connected to it or does it charge a little slower?

The pins are there, they're just hard to see because of the angle and how much they're tucked away in the groove. I didn't see them until I opened up the left Joy-Con for the foam fix.
