The juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto V has now surpassed 80m sales, according to publisher Take-Two. In the company's Q4 and fiscal year earnings release, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the title has now sold at least another 5m copies since the company's last earnings report in February, taking its total sell-in figure to an impressive 80m since its launch in September 2013.

Indeed, he revealed to MCV that physical sales are still the driving force behind the title's seemingly unstoppable success, standing at 75 per cent compared to 25 per cent digital sales: "What's driving this is that consumers love this title and want more of it," he added.

It's not just Rockstar's titles that are doing well, though, as 2K's Mafia III has now sold-in more than 5m units, while Civilization VI has sold-in nearly 2m units. Zelnick also revealed the Civilization series has a whole has now sold more than 40m units worldwide.

NBA 2K17 is also set to become Take-Two's highest-selling sports title ever, with a sell-in of nearly 8m to date. Its recurrent consumer spending also continues to grow, rising 71 per cent over the last fiscal year.

How does Mafia 3 manage to sell 4.5 Million copies in a week and end up at 5 Million shipped? You are telling me that only 500k people bought the game in the meantime?

Kinda unexpected, even if it was a pretty disappointing game for me outside of the story.

Good numbers for Mafia! Has its issues, but under the slog is a very cool game.

Wonder if it met their expectations.

Probably not, because it needed to sell 8 Million copies to break even with production costs.

GTA5 on Steam (emphasis on "on Steam" as only Steam offers the Steam version) is currently at ~7.15m. If you believe that RDR2 won't have a belated PC port. I've a bridge to sell you, frankly.

2K shipped more copies than consumers demanded.

Insane sales numbers in GTA. In an investment call from a couple years ago they revealed that GTA Online was making as much money as retail sales of GTAV... So if that's continued it's just such a boon to them. Wherever snatched up DMA/Rockstar at Take2 15 years+ should get a coke.

I 100% believe those 80 million sold. And I say sold, because eventhough it says shipped, at the rate GTA5 is selling, it will hit those numbers in no time.

Unbelievable numbers and wow at that high digital purchase percentage.

GTA 6 will change the world.

4.5M was shipped. It was a massive over shipment seeing how they only sent out another 500K (Plus digital sold through).

Gta 6 will probably outsell tetris.
Holy fuck@20 million digital copies. Great sales for mafia 3 as well. How tho? Wasnt the game universally panned?

If you mean the original Gameboy Tetris, that only sold around 35 million copies.

If you mean the Tetris franchise, fuckin' good luck.

Also mafia wasn't universally panned. It was however, incredibly hyped.

Once again Steamspy proven to be very accurate, it shows just under 1.9 million copies of Civ 6 owned on Steam.

wow impressive milestone

100M possible?

Give it one more year. They shipped 5M more in just 3 months, and that was January through March. Also is one of the games bought with new XB1/PS4 purchases so as those install bases go up, so will GTA V.

So Mafia 3 only shipped 0,5M units since it's first week

Welllllll shit. Hope they can get another shot. They really need to just make a linear, yet open game, structured almost like Uncharted. I think they are capable of making something amazing, but the need to craft an open world just doesn't mix with what I feel are the reasons why people like Mafia in the first place; for it's story and focused gameplay sections.

looks it was quite overshipped

the demand for the game was pretty high on its launch, but the game didn't deliver as good of an experience as people were hoping. Lack of launch day reviews helped a lot as well

First week sales were probably shipment numbers as well.

Mafia 3 was massively overshipped to the point that I'm somewhat surprised they even managed to ship another 500k units.

Anecdotally, I bought the PS4 version a couple weeks before Christmas for a mere 20€. It's been some time since the last time I saw a major game drop in price that quickly.

Yet they still gonna play dumb about RDR2 coming to PC right until it's released

Also I'm interested in how many sales are only through the Rockstar launcher. I know quite a bit of people who bought through that / 3rd party seller.

Glad Mafia 3 is doing well. They have a very solid foundation for another sequel.

The figure gives the wrong impression. The game shipped 4.5m in its first week but has only just recently hit 5m. Supply greatly outstripped demand.

I wonder how WWE 2K is doing, that game has felt like a cheap cash-in ever since THQ lost it. Hell, last year they were packing the game in the monthly Humble Bundle. Keys were selling for $2 or less

Found it, 3m sold-in to date. Sold-in means shipped right?

I still haven't gotten myself a copy

Thinking about getting it on PS4 first but mainly looking forward to buying it on pc

When all is said and done, GTA V will easily surpass 100 million copies sold in about 5 years since launch in 2013.

Unreal.
