[SPOILERS] Persona 5 Spoiler Thread | Steal your heart; steel yourself

Yeah, that moments particularly weird since when Joker/Ryuji/Ann and Mona became the Phantom Thieves, the like one rule they had was that they all had to agree on and be comfortable with the targets they picked. Ryuji was just trying to abide by and respect that core principle. Mona suddenly not giving a fuck about that and forgetting that and lashing out at Ryuji for that of all things, especially despite having given assurances to the group that everything was fine with him up to that pint, was what was odd and in turn lead to the others being confused.
Exactly, that's one of the first rules they decide to follow as a group. Sure, Morgana had a thing with Ryuji, but there's no reason for him to react like he did to the others when they bring up valid points about the situation.
Or what about the princess that doesn't know how to interact with the world around her because of her upbringing? That's Melia, Estelle, Mitsuru Kirijo, and Haru;
Hmmm, I would say that description fits more to Makoto than Haru.
Also who's going to fix the van for our sweet car trip?
Mishima and his NPC powers. Then the PT leave him behind.

I was gonna mention Makoto (after all she's the Queen) and even Yukiko since she's the heir of the only interesting place in the whole Inaba, but Haru is the Empress so she wins over Makoto.

Except that unlike Ryuji, Morgana isn't constantly talking about being phantom thief in public, wasn't one of the nitwits that got you caught by Makoto by blabbing about it in public and wasn't saying crap like "we should tell girls we're phantom thieves to pick up chicks".
Ann is same as Ryuji in wanting more PT attention but Morgana lets her off the hook. Ruiji desires validation which my own self would want the same in his shoes, this makes him very human.

In a couple scenes Joker can pick the dialogue choice to casually out Ryuji as PTs to random people, to his shock, and no one believed him anyways.

So it was Akechi's birthday yesterday and we totally forget to celebrate

♪

Oh I did plenty of celebrating, I assure you.

How are people approaching NG+? After seeing I don't have my EXP bonuses for fusing persona, I'm kinda burned slightly. I need to get the last 20%. Hell, I can't even get late game Persona fused :/

Yup. Morgana is either just being a dick to Ryuji about wanting fame because he doesn't like him, or letting Ann off the hook because he thinks she's hot. Probably a combination of both. Also, he mostly wants to become human to behave like Teddy, so he's also a hypocritical little bastard who's probably going to be a talking cat forever. I hope Joker gets him fixed. I can't believe my Morgana and Ryuji opinions have shifted so much, but here I am.

Can you still go back to
Mementos after reaching Qliphoth World? I'm still missing a couple of treasure demons. And what about going back to the shops at this point? What if I want to restock items?

I think you can go back to shops though? You definitely could in the Memento Depths at least.

I respect it a lot. I gotta keep moving up the ranks to be Joker's #1 fangirl so I can't go around softening my stance on Akechi, but he has some adorable moments.

Speaking of Akechi, was anyone else totally blindsided by him being the villain as I was? >.>

Everyone says it's so obvious, and after NG+ I agree, but all the hints slipped right by me... the pancakes line, the "Crows are dangerous!" school lesson, etc... never thought anything of all of it.

Really liked Akechi too, so when he betrayed me I was all like "wtf man you really grew on me :(".

Also in my defense: I only got into Persona 5 after it was released and I played it at a friend's house, so I didn't see the fact that Akechi is in barely any group shots of the Thieves in a lot of the promotional materials.

It was weird in that it was super obvious, arguably so obvious that you can't help but think it can't actually be him. But... I kinda forgot about it, because the whole pancakes scene was so long ago.

You can totally go soft on Akechi as a Joker fan. Take up Joker's super nice to Akechi route, and then you and I will be destined to become great rivals with no small amount of unresolved sexual tension.

I'll see myself out.

I fell into this trap. I was like, "They wouldn't make it this obvious if it was really him. That would just be terrible."

But it was him. And it was terrible. And I was really fucking salty for about maybe a minute, until Akechi showed up and shot Joker in the face.

Then I wasn't mad anymore. I was stunned that he actually did it, and then impressed. It's one thing to sell someone out to the police. It's another thing entirely to look them straight in the eyes and take their life.

The twist would've been insanely stupid to me if not for the fact that the actual twist is that the group was completely prepared for his betrayal.

Despite my dissapointment in how he turned out be, I don't regret taking the nice route while dealing with Goro. I used him as much as I could during November and bought him his best equipment at the moment. Can't wait to lvl up him up to 99 when doing the Reaper trick in NG+.

Confidant Rank Up!

I'm still salty that I didn't catch that he was a wild card in that exact moment. Like, fucking of course he was. The mask he wore in Sae's palace wasn't black, and he was somehow ranking up Confidant ranks with my cognitive doppelganger.

But I, like an asshole, didn't get it til the appearance of Loki.

One of my absolute favorite things about Akechi are his "heroic" battle lines:

"MY SKILLS EXCEED YOURS"
"I WAS MERCIFUL"
"IT'LL BE A MASSACRE!"
"IMBECILE!"

I was super nice to him! NG+ is going to be me being a dick to him, ha.

I knew it was him up until I thought it was Haru as a bait and switch. I really needed there to be some rational reason for her existence. I still don't have one.

Dude what. This is fuccboi-ish, but I'd call it more lame than anything else. Mishima is on a whole other level when it comes to specifically being a fuccboi.

Nah, Akechi's just extra as fuck. Fuckboys are defined by how they view/treat women. And you know that boy gay.
No, but seriously, Akechi doesn't objectify women the way that Mishima and Ryuji do. I'm not sure he has a sex drive at all.

That DLC makes everyone look like either hypebeast trash or an eco terrorist. Akechi hasn't even had time to remember he's hit puberty since he's been so busy killing people for daddy's favor

No idea what the hell definition you're using lmfao. A fuckboy is the type of guy who would send unsolicited dick pics to girls and then turn around and go, "Seriously guys, why's she pissed?" The kind of guy who's desperate to be a pussy hound but can't seal the deal because women smell the bullshit coming off of him from a mile away. Or, when he does actually get laid, goes around like, "Yeah, these bitches can't keep their hands off of me." Being a fuckboy also involves a certain degree of mansplaining and a good chunk of life spent on social media, especially Tinder. So spineless and lacking in self-esteem that's it's amazing he can actually stand upright, so he makes up for it with machismo and false bravado.

Akechi doesn't fall under this umbrella.

If that's the definition of fuccboi you're using you've got a weird Mishima living in your heads. If he had the self confidence to send solicited dick-pics I'd be surprised.

I think that's a pretty specific take on a more general thing. Like you can be a fuccboi without the whole being terrible to women thing, though the crossover is nearly a perfect circle.

I was more referring to the fashion side with that akechi image lol.

fuccboi or fuckboy?

I think the first time I heard the word was from Killer Mike and I always assumed it as fuccboi, but sometimes when I want to sound meaner I'll say fuckboy.

;_________;7 I'm so glad. I haven't been taken with a character like this in a while, and I want to spread the love.

He's got a great design, a solid voice and his character concept is genuinely fantastic. I absolutely love how he wasn't just another typical party member in the end. The raw ugliness in his character made him stand out, especially in a series where every attractive teenager is automatically a good person™. Having them subvert that trend was great, even if he was incredibly obvious as a traitor. I had him spoiled ahead of time, but I honestly appreciate it in retrospect. Every time he spoke with his fake, put upon "goodboi" voice I died. His fake Persona is so obvious once you know the truth. He's a tryhard in literally aspect, even right down to Robin Hood and his various "heroic" battle lines. His boss battle is just... fantastic, in nearly every regard (well besides difficulty)

I definitely understand the criticisms directed towards him, and I was disappointed with how he was handled in the end, but goddamn, Akechi is entertaining as fuck.

He's the most extra character in the game (if not the series)

This is a beautiful post, but I can't abide the bolded. My honest to god biggest criticism of Akechi's character, even taking into account the rushed, shoddy writing surrounding his wrap-up, is his voice. Robbie Draymond is unequivocally the weakest link in the entire English cast, and it drags the character down so, so much. And it's a damn fucking shame, because Akechi's Japanese seiyuu is amazing.

I legit don't understand why they didn't just cast Yuri Lowenthal to play the part, because Draymond was trying his hardest to sound like Yuri the entire time anyway. It was just... so bad. Draymond's performance was so awful.

I'm sry, this is just a huge pet peeve of mine.

Also I've said this word way too many times now.

Finally finished the game after 140 hours and my immediate thoughts before I have to go to bed.

- I totally called them taking advantage of Igor needing a new VA to pull a "Fake Igor" twist, but when the real Igor was revealed... Wow. What an embarrassing casting job, in English, at least. not even close. The only truly unacceptable VA job in the entire game. I can't believe that was good enough for them.

- Almost everything about Akechi ended up being an anti-climax, up to and including how him going traitor means you never really get the gameplay catharsis of a "final party member" joining. Maybe if his battle had some more flair to it, to a unique theme, or something, but it almost felt like the game was just trying to cram in a way to write him out of the plot.

- The epilogue idea is nice, but things stretch out so much around and after Christmas that I was starting to get fatigued. Also, the way Sae brings up the odd coincidences surrounding MC, and the game borrowing P4's "go say goodbye to everyone" along with an "Are you sure you want to return home? Really sure?" had me wandering around thinking there was still a truer path to be taking, and when I finally realized I was wasting my time I felt a little annoyed.

WHAAAAAAAAAAA~T

I thought Robbie Daymond was fantastic as Akechi. He nailed the "goodboi" side of the character because he's primarily voiced goodboi's in anime/games. They somehow managed match the effect of casting Soichiro Hoshi as Akechi. He stumbles on a few of his badboi lines, but I think he did a good job overall. Discounting how extremely overused Yuri is in Persona, his voice is too nasally/whiny for badboi Akechi imo.

I hated him. So. Much.

UwvUsQF.gif

It frequently felt like Draymond wasn't comfortable with Akechi's style of speaking or the complexity of his character. For someone to play Akechi, they need to be able to convey multiple aspects of him at the same time. Akechi speaks quasi-formally, but he's also meant to be charming. He's polite, but his words are usually backhanded. He's confident, but there's doubt in him. He doesn't give a fuck, because if he stops for more than a second, he'll be crushed under his own guilt.

I felt like Draymond missed all of that. His delivery was frequently stilted and awkward, more focused on getting the words out clearly than making them feel right. His performance is okay when Akechi's mood is only meant to be just one thing at a time in a scene, but when he's not being super angsty or screaming, he just sounds like a drone who's too swept up in perfect enunciation to remember that he's actually supposed to be playing a character with, like, motives and feelings and shit.

Yuri would've been perfect for Akechi. After all, it's not like he doesn't already have on his resume a role of a terribly troubled detective character with a polite exterior that hides a nightmarish storm on the inside.

Who also undergoes a psychotic break at one point in the story and attacks his former teammates.

And is a rad-ass boss fight, arguably the best in the game.

And even tries once during the story to commit suicide.

(If you haven't played
The Evil Within
, you really should. It'll squash any trepidation you have about Yuri's voice being too "whiny" to do the psychotic scenes correctly.
Haunted!Joseph screaming, "Fuck you, Kidman!"
