Bethesda (Elder Scrolls/Fallout) making a "bleeding-edge AAA freemium" game

A few things worth noting:
  1. This job posting seems to be separate from their mobile game, as all their mobile job postings list that they're for a mobile game, and the mobile game isn't referred to as being "AAA".
  2. They have previously said they're working on two "big" games and a mobile title, so this being one of the big titles would make sense.
  3. To be clear, this is Bethesda Game Studios (the developer of Elder Scrolls/Fallout), not just Bethesda Softworks the publisher.

Bethesda Game Studios is looking for a great Game Performance Manager based in Montreal, to join the team that is pushing the bleeding-edge AAA freemium game development.

In this role, you will work with game team to envision, evolve, and operate monetization strategies, targeting the intersection of revenue generation goals and quality player experience. Ideally, you will have experience defining and operating online game business models, and have a deep understanding of player interactions with those models, both at the individual and community levels.

Responsibilities
  • Work with the game design team on monetization design, strategy and execution;
  • Envision in-game content and business model recommendations;
  • Set requirements and create specifications for monetization features;
  • Drive and operate the resulting initiatives;
  • Analyze the competitive landscape and benchmark against competitors;
  • Drive data analysis and research to evaluate the health of the business and to explore new business opportunities;
  • Assimilate feedback from players, competitive research, market trends, and quantitative data to propose and make recommendations that impact game content and product vision;
  • Develop testing methodologies, analyze data to optimize price points and model the impact of new game features;
  • Work with team to define metrics and develop dashboards to measure engagement and monetization success;
  • Regularly review monetization strategy and performance, and present results to stakeholders;
Requirements
  • Undergraduate degree level education in Business or related field;
  • A minimum of 5 years' experience supporting AAA products;
  • Strong competence in analyzing data and drawing actionable business insight;
  • Proven experience taking business initiatives from conception to launch;
  • Outstanding communications, project management, and relationship-building skills;
  • Proven ability to work well in a team environment and manage multiple complex projects with diverse groups;
  • Being comfortable with uncertainty;
Pluses
  • Combination of game development and game publishing experience

First project from the new Montreal studio it seems. I guess the Maryland team that we're used to is working on their own thing?

They are hiring a senior server engineer in Maryland (along with a backend services developer), but that may be more for shared technology.

My guess though would be that they have a more traditional (for Bethesda) new IP, this AAA service game, and their new mobile game.

I hope this is the MOBA game, because I would be really disappointed if Bethesda is working on a F2P game and a MOBA game.

The suspected MOBA is from the publisher in general. It might be from any of the ZeniMax studios, or even an external studio.

Since people have been saying their next game wont just be another Bethesda trademark RPG my guess has been some kind of co op crafting survival thing Ark and Rust.

It is a logical step after they have put some of that stuff into Fallout and Skyrim.

Its a smaller scale project then a typical Bethesda RPG

The door is wide open on consoles for a game like that.

Fuck, not like this!

Bethesda said they would be coming with two new IP while totally different than what they've done before but also that it would still play and feel like their other games.

Sounds about right!

Hopefully going the Ubisoft route and making an open world service game. Fallout Wildlands, essentially, but with a new ip. Can never have enough Coop.

I could see them doing something cool in this field. When was the last time the publisher has put out a game that wasn't well recieved? I know Fallout 4 had some backlash, but I feel like that was more a vocal minority than general consensus.

The rumored Game of Thrones game, perhaps?

This would be great for hooking in the show's casual viewing audience without having to make something that overlaps with Skyrim.

Actually they said these two new IP each would be bigger than they've ever done before, so that includes Fallout and TES. And they said the game would still be like their big open world RPGs but different. And with different I think they mean setting.

They have done fantasy and post apocalyptic, but not yet sci-fi. This does sound like a game that is still fully in development and not coming out soon, so it definitely could be that second new game.

That one is for an online multiplayer game:
Bethesda Game Studios®, located in Montreal, is looking for great talented senior Backend/Server Engineer to develop and maintain scalable and high performance platform services that support online and multiplayer gaming experience.
Considering the job description of this asks for experience with Unreal/Unity, I'd guess it's for their mobile game, which is also developed in Unity according to the other job descriptions (just like Fallout Shelter).

I wouldn't say that the freemium job listing is for a different project than their big RPG or the mobile project - especially since it also doesn't say it's for PC and consoles like the other listings do. I think it's extremely likely that this is for the new mobile game, which is being called AAA here due to an expanded budget and scope after Fallout Shelter (which was also freemium) made much more money than they expected.

Is this Starfield? Sigh.

i'm thinking Starfield is their 'play it safe/stick with what you know' open world rpg while everything else they're working on besides ES6 being stuff to expand their portfolio a bit in the way of genre

or even if it is starfield i think we're going to get a pretty standard bethesda open world rpg before anything else

That sounds more hopeful. I really really hope it's only for the mobile game. I mean can't Fallout Shelter and Elder Scrolls Legends be considered freemium?

Fallout 4 sold really well so it would be shocking if they made a freemium AAA rpg.

Then again they would probably dominate big time with the amount of users playing if it actually turns out to be a good game.

Goddamnit. It's what I feared when they made fallout shelter. Bethesda got a taste of that micdotransaction money and this is the direction they are going to move things in. It's like r* with gta online (and now we see where R*'s focus is).

ugh..is this the end of traditional games where publishers don't think up ways to fuck over consumers first and foremost over having a decent quality experience....the success of mobile games has doomed the world

Becomes baffled, curling up into a ball when confronted with three controller options.
Would much rather a real game that's full price rather than this silliness

Have there ever been a successful triple a freemium game on console ? And don't say any game that has an entry price is freemium unless you're Goon!

What does 'bleeding edge' mean for BGS? That it's not running on gamebryo (or whatever they're calling it these days)? Can't say I'm excited to play this, or any future BGS title after Fallout 4.
