Square still interested in bringing Final Fantasy XIV to Switch/XB, convos ongoing

Final Fantasy XIV discussions with Nintendo and Microsoft are ongoing but may take a long time

"We want as many players joining Final Fantasy XIV as possible," Yoshida assured. Final Fantasy XIV's head honcho says the team's "base policy" to achieving this is to continuously explore different options for new platforms to bring their beloved game to, and that discussions with Nintendo and Microsoft were most definitely ongoing.

The problem, Yoshida says, is that as an MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV has regular patch updates that can't be delayed depending on the platform. "We need to make sure Nintendo and Microsoft understand what we do and have them know about our online and QA regulations. We believe these conversations will take a long time."

Expanding to new platforms means growing your community and support for those communities needs to be a shared responsibility between Square Enix and Nintendo and/or Microsoft. Having those companies understand that is part of the ongoing discussion.

Yoshida's a cool guy and all but he's totally fibbing about Switch. If SE can release DQX on both PS4 and Switch then FFXIV is totally feasible.

I don't know why he just doesn't come out and say they're not doing it.

Yeah. Dragon Quest X is coming to Switch, heck it was a Wii game at first of all things. So I doubt the negotiations could take that long, and more of them just not wanting to do it right now.

Was about to say. Dragon Quest X was on the Wii, Wii U, and now coming to the Switch. Nintendo is 100% up for after that. It's either coming or not. "Talks" shouldn't be a long process with Nintendo. It should be can the game run on the Switch or not and at what graphic settings. Storage isn't an issue since like said DQX released on the Wii, Wii U, and now Switch. SD cards are big enough and portable hard drives are a thing.

Edit: Outside of this no way in hell does Nintendo say no to the best Final Fantasy game in recent memory. They'll make it work.

DQX was even on the Wii, so there's no reason they shouldn't be able to release FF14 on the Switch, or really any platform, as they all are huge steps up from it in terms of power and online capabilities

It won't come to XB1 because MS won't allow the PS4 and XB1 players to play together, YoshiP has literally stated this is the reason.

I highly doubt he is no ones forcing him to say this and he gains nothing from it. More likely it'a a slim chances that he's championing but is very unlikely but he thinks not completely impossible.

It's less about the hardware and more about allowing players the ability to play with others on different platforms.

See the dearth of times he's said this before.

Microsoft made DCUiniverse only play in Xbox servers no cross play. I have 0 faith Nintendo will allow cross play and the Switch network capabilities are not up to par for this anyways it is. The wifi is horrible.

Such a shame. FF14 works incredibly well on console.

Then again it would also limit what they can do hardware wise so maybe it's best they don't.

How does a Wii game getting ported to higher-powered systems make it a given that the Switch can run FFXIV (especially given that they just dropped the PS3 support for this expansion, so obviously the expectation is that the game requires more power at this point).

They have been talking for 2 years what in the world

Yoshida doesn't want XBL's online fee on top of the FFXIV sub fee, it would require patches to all come out at the same time, and requires all platforms to be able to play together and no restricted "platform only" worlds. Microsoft has been real stubborn with that.

Lol. DQX is Wii U/Switch/PS4, so they definitely allow this.

Nah, Matsuda seems to be supportive of Switch so if Yoshida actually wanted it he's probably support it.

Okay and DQX is an MMO from Yoshida's own company which shares servers between PS4 and Wii, Wii U and Switch.... so what's the issue?

Nintendo already allows it though. Square Enix own Dragon Quest X does even.

And Nintendo's "network capabilities" were consierably inferior on Wii, were DQX launched.

Yeah with XB I can understand, but with Switch they already have DQX which is on Wii/Wii U/PS4/PC as well.

I'd love a Lite mode to play on Portable even if it's reduced to crafting and fishing.

Interesting i had no idea. Now there's a chance. But with them dropping PS3 support is it gonna be possible on a technical level? It would be nice to have it portable because the vita remote play I can't deal with no triggers. Also the size of the game is another issue

The ability to walk from my pc in the office to my bed and play on the switch sounds awesome. But, good lord the size of the SD card would need to be huge.

The PS4 struggles with it sometimes so I'm curious how the Switch would hold up. It'd be playable but probably not ideal.

Why wouldn't it be possible power wise?

Switch > Wii U > PS3

The Switch isn't some weak system compared to the PS3.

It was playable on PS3 and it was interesting to play it
It was so insanely compromised compared to the PC version

Yoshida isn't the one who makes that decision for DQX; afaik he only consults on that game. *Aeana signal.*

It's either Nintendo or perhaps there is something hardware-related, is all I can think of.

Maybe cross-refernce the Stormblood minimum specs with Switch (edit: since they were raised with this upcoming expansion)

Well then Yoshida is still lying because that's not what he's saying in interviews.

Yoshida said that? And cant you still play F2P games without gold? I thought they changed that rule a few years ago?

Microsoft allows this now though. Originally yes it was the reason but thats not the reason anymore.

No, Microsoft relaxed their policy without stating details. It was basically a PR move to get people to point the finger at Sony.

In fact the FFXIV team looked into it, and confirm MS wasnt serious and just threw something together for a PR win (in my opinion)

"Microsoft actually approached the Final Fantasy 14 team about the cross-platform opportunity," Yoshida told Polygon. "When our team reviewed the regulations that are associated with that, we realized that Microsoft may not have the experience or understanding of running an MMORPG as an online game genre just yet. The Final Fantasy 14 team has fed back to Microsoft that there are certain elements of its regulations that we would have to consider waived. We're waiting on Microsoft's response for that, but we are having discussions.

It was so low res and the animation culling made everything look like stop animation.

Large events like hunts were unplayable because you couldn't load in time and even if you did you would not see the target if it was a busy time of day lol.
