Sony E3 2017 Conference Thread [Over]

Pretty bad conference. A lot the games they showed this year, they also showed last year. And a lot of them still won't be out until 2018. The only thing that legitimately excited me was Monster Hunter.

This sounds crazy, and I can't believe I'm saying it, but... I think Ubisoft is winning E3. Kinda doubt Nintendo is going to drop a lot of bombs tomorrow, either.

I can see how that would be boring. During the Destiny 2 trailer, banners from the game got lowered around the whole room.

Here's during the MH trailer

That's what I figured after that brief cut to the people hanging from the ceiling. Almost like they wanted to up the hype from their Orchestra that was so well received, and wanted to go for some budget Cirque Du Soleil thing that would wow people there in person but apparently forgot that the vast majority of people watching the showcase wouldn't see it. I honestly think they had the best intentions to entertain, they just fucked up the execution...really badly.

People were so swept up in the spectacle and pace of last year's E3 that Sony seems to have forgotten that, if done right, devs talking can be entertaining and endearing. Maybe they thought after all the attention they gave Sean Murray, and how No Man's Sky was received, that it'd be a good idea to cut that out. But people fucking loved him up until launch. People loved Keita Takahashi on stage with a fork, spinning around. Yu suzuki showing up for Shenmue 3. Fumito Ueda's ovation when TLG was re-revealed. Kojima's "I'm back!". People loved Josef Fares this year, and I hope Sony realizes this before their next conference.

This year felt a bit like a break, too many games announced for the upcoming 1-2 years, that anything announced now would be concept art, or at best a CG trailer. I want them to continue this break until E3 next year. Show some Japanese games at TGS, things that wouldn't really work for a western audience. PSX focus on "the players", don't go all out again and show us half a dozen great games that we'll see again 6 months later, at least not from 1st party. Show gameplay of already announced titles, announce localization of Japanese games like Dragon Quest XI, offer as many playable demos as possible. God of War, Spider-Man, Yakuza 6, Days Gone, Shadow of the Colossus, just go all out on something like "if you couldn't make it here this weekend, don't worry, all of these game will be playable for PS+ users tonight! You get a demo, and you get a demo!", "Play Destiny 2 for free all week!", make a big deal of the January PS+ lineup with all AAA games. Super Street Fighter 5, out today for free to all SFV owners. Without really announcing much new.

Then come back to E3 with a bunch of reveals and first gameplay demos.

Kind of a weird conference. They have a decent lineup of stuff still coming out in 2017 and many were all relegated to the pre-show. thinking maybe I blinked and missed a sizzle reel or something...

Crash Trilogy, Wipeout - this month
Everybody's Golf - August
Knack 2 - September
Niño kiuni 2 a - November
GT Sport - Fall (ok this one might still get delayed lol)

And some other third party ps4/pc stuff iirc.

Yeah, there was a lot of cool trailers and reveals in the preshow that could have been included in the main show. Probably would have made it a lot better.

Holy Fuck this was the worst E3 I've ever seen, literally only Wolfenstein hyped me up. Games industry better have good shit to offer next year cos this was junk.

Some perfectly great games. Basically what i thought. Sony is in a comfortable spot right now. Great games and great games ahead.
Shadow of the C. was a big surprise for me. Never played it but will now.

It sold me on the Xbox One X. I already own a PS4 and Xbox One, but was looking to upgrade to either Pro or One X and i didn't really see anything from Sony that i wouldn't be happy enough to play on my PS4. No game that really blew my mind and demanded a PS4 Pro. Underwhelming conference indeed.

No game would ever do that with you.
You may not understand what the Pro is. Is an upgrade, not a new console.

Same with XboXoneX, by the way. Eventhough that one seems like a new one.

Well, this was different. Give me the talk in between trailers back please. One giant trailer reel didn't really feel right.

I feel similarly tbh.
After getting Horizon Zero Dawn and realizing how good it looks on the base PS4 im in no rush to get a pro.

I missed the pre-show, sadly, but the actual conference was alright. Far from the mind-blowing spectacle that was Sony's E3 2016 conference. I had hoped that it would at least be on its level or close to it, but this was just alright and not much more.

Spider-Man was a spectacular way to close the show, and I am very satisfied with the (almost) 9-minute demo they gave us. Shame that it isn't coming out this year like Agent M said, but I'm okay with that. Still got plenty to play this year anyway. At least we have a release date for it now, as well as for God of War, which looked amazing. Shadow of the Colossus was a pretty big surprise, and Days Gone looked cool. Nothing special about Days Gone so far, but I do really like what I'm seeing so far. I was excited to see the Horizon DLC, but it didn't really do anything for me. It felt like a poorly executed tease, I suppose? Oh! And Detroit looked fantastic, so I'm definitely even more excited for that now.

Hopefully, PSX will have a lot more to show us later this year, or at least simply be a more exciting show. I do miss the developers talking about their games, though. Maybe a little more of that would make things more fun. Find the right balance.

And I get that they need to market VR, but that had to be the low point of the conference for me. The Inpatient looked great, but other than that: bleurgh.

Overall I liked the conference, best announcement shadow of the colossus remake, and highlights being Spider-man and God of War. Was impressed with the VR announcements, shows me Sony is really still supporting it. Never cared for monster hunter but mh world looks impressive, will keep an eye out. Not a lot of new games or surprises and a bit disappointed with no sucker punch and smaller/indie games(but thats what psx is for).

I think the main problem is that expectation were really high, especially because of the past couple of e3, but at some point, a conference like this was bound to happen. While good, nothing really blew me away mainly because we've seen the big hitters already. It would have been probably better if they didn't show games at the pre show and they should have kept ff dissidia for this conference.

Top conference for me were: Sony, Ubisoft, Microsoft, Ea, Bethesda.

It's so weird to me how much perception has shifted. We have gone from "Too much fluff! Too much talking!" all the way to "Why aren't the developers talking onstage?" I think Bethesda and Ubisoft probably hit the sweet spot, in terms of how much of their show should be video versus how much should be talking.

Was too late for me to watch yesterday but having catched up now.

It was .... Ok. Felt very safe but I guess that after 2 big E3 they decided to take it a bit slower and focus on updates of what they have shown in previous year.

I think overall it would have left a better impression if they had 1-2 surprises aside from SOTC

Finally got to watch all of the press conference. It was pretty much on par with the other conferences so far. Everything was just kind of underwhelming, but there are still plenty of games I'm looking forward to Overall though, it definitely feels like an off year for everyone.

For Sony though, I thought the games we already knew about like Spiderman, GoW, Detroit, and Uncharted continue to look great. I was super excited about the Shadow remake, I've never played the original but I love the Last Guardian, so I'm looking forward to it. Horizon DLC wasn't surprising but it's my GOTY so far, so I'm definitely looking forward to it. Monster Hunter looks cool. The 3rd party stuff looked good as well.

I do just have to say that I am still so underwhelmed by Days Gone. Outside of the zombie group tech, everything looks really boring and generic. I mean, Horizon didn't exactly have any ground breaking new gameplay features, but they put it in such a cool and unique setting, and just made everything feel so good. Days Gone is like the opposite of that. Boring, overused setting, and the gameplay looks like worse versions of other games. I just feel like there are stuff in the game, like the beautiful graphics and interesting zombie tech, that could have been used in a much more original way. Hopefully the game turns out well, but right now I'm just not feeling it.

I do understand what the Pro is and it still doesn't change the fact that the conference did nothing to sell me on one. I had hoped for a killer conference to really show me that doubling down on Sony with the PS4 Pro was the way i should go. I had hoped to see new games to win me over, but it was more like Microsofts conference in that department. It was more about showing more of games we already knew.

I'm still excited for the upcoming days. I don't think E3 has officially started yet, we're still at Pre-E3!

i think playstation experience 2016 is the perfect sweet spot in how you pace a conference with variety of content and the flow of information.

You can't criticise the quality of the software shown, even Days Gone is starting to look pretty great.

Still, the conference was a massive let down. No major announcements from 1st or 3rd parties and not even release dates for Days Gone and Detroit.

When Layden reappeared I thought it was for a half time breather, can't believe how short it was.

bit of a weird one this year. why announce stuff on the pre show especially things like undertale and the new party game?
one long show reel didnt really do anything for me, sometimes you need someone out on a stage to break things up.
Nothing really new this year bar mhw and can you count sotc? so are they going to have a blow out at psx?

All in all E3 has been just ok so far . which is where id put the sony conference - just ok.

Just wondering if they didnt really try to do anything big because they thought they might get upstaged by scorpio and they expected microsoft to wow people more than they did?

Yep people were saying how bored the crowd was too.

Huh. What a bizarre showing. Why even go to E3, on stage, with a huge audience if you are essentially just going to play video clips one after the other? Might as well go the Nintendo route if that's the case!

Also, very little new (outside of PSVR, which I don't care about at all) shown.

Worst Sony E3 I can remember.

There are plenty of games that take good advantage of the pro already. And new games will do too.
That's the only difference the Pro and the Scorpio make. They make games run a bit prettier or a bit better.

MS had a pretty good show imo, with lots of games. But only two or three exclusives.

I'm not trying to win you over for the pro, i don't care what you buy. Just as long as you realize what both the Pro and the Scorpio do.

Yep people were saying how bored the crowd was too.

We knew about almost all of the games and besides call of duty and Destiny they're all 2018. They completely ignored indie games and the psvr stuff was so terrible. That's actually where I think the conference imploded and could never recover from... psvr.

I also hope there is more to Spider-Man. Looked like one big awful QTE. It was pretty looking I guess. Shrug.

Holy Fuck this was the worst E3 I've ever seen, literally only Wolfenstein hyped me up. Games industry better have good shit to offer next year cos this was junk.

If the conferences are all you care about I guess that makes sense but E3 hasn't actually even started yet.

Conference wasn't as good as the last two years but that's not surprising considering there was never any chance of them topping some of those announcements. Still... they showed a lot of stuff I'm interested in seeing more of or just playing outright. This is the first time I've been excited for a Monster Hunter game, God of War looks awesome, Spidermen looked real good, Uncharted and the SOTC remake are buys.

The main one I'm not sure about at this point is Days gone, I think this is one of those games that kind of needs someone on stage to talk about the game and explain what we are seeing or doing. The visuals are pretty great but I don't blame anyone for viewing it as a generic Zombie game when there is almost no context for what the game is as a whole.

I've no intention of buying a PSVR so I don't really care about any of that stuff, though I did think Moss looked kind of interesting. Also sucks that Ni No Kuni 2 was wasted on the pre show thing.

I don't know what it is, but the Youtube and Twitch streams were very, very, bad this year watching Sony's conference. The Youtube stream kept buffering and the Twitch stream didn't have sound. It kind of in a way would've ruined the conference for me if it wasn't for the likes of God of War, and Spider-Man. 2018 and beyond looks insane for Sony. Even this year has already been incredible and it's not over yet.

That wasn't my point.

I don't really know what to make of Days Gone. The zombies appear in such fast, insurmountable numbers that there's no reason to try and fight against them. After this conference it seems like humans will be the enemies a lot more than the zombies.

Pretty uneventful. It wasn't boring and moved quickly but no big wow's outside of God of War.

So far games of the show:

1) Anthem
2) God Of War
3) Spiderman

Deacon's decision to find and save his friend begins a harrowing journey that demonstrates the core of the Days Gone experience: if something moves, it probably wants to kill you. And the Horde is just one of your problems. Last year we introduced three types of Freakers: Swarmers were adults when infected and are dangerous whether alone or moving in packs; Newts were children when infected and tend to use hit-and-run tactics from above; Hordes are large groups of Swarmers – and by large we mean hundreds – that move and react as if a single entity. This year we're introducing three new types: Runners are infected wolves that can outrun and attack a Drifter bike, sending the rider sprawling; Ragers – infected bears – are powerful and almost impossible to kill; and Swarms, smaller than Hordes but more common and almost as deadly.
But the biggest threat in Days Gone isn't Freakers – it's other people. Bad people. Marauders, Squatters, Drifters, Raiders – call them what you will, if you step outside the relative safety of the encampments, they will try to kill you. This is one of the things that makes Days Gone unique: you don't have to seek out danger. Wherever you're going, whatever you're doing – the world comes for you. In the media showcase demo Deacon is attacked by a Runner and deals with it, but while he's distracted — WHAM. He rides into a rope strung across the road, throwing him from his bike. In Days Gone, ambushes are almost never scripted events but are part of a dynamic open-world system – Marauders can attempt to ambush you almost anytime and anyplace. Taking out their camps can make the broken road safer, but that isn't always easy. Thankfully, Deacon has access to an arsenal of skills, weapons, crafted items, traps and most importantly, the various dynamic systems we have in place.
The bad news with Freakers is that Runners, Ragers, Swarms and Hordes want to kill you and eat you. The good news: they also want to kill and eat Marauders. Last year you saw Deacon running for his life from a Horde; this year, you see him using a Swarm as a weapon against a Marauder camp. The possibilities are almost endless and are an important part of our strategic sandbox combat.
If you're at E3, stop by the PlayStation booth to get a look at an alternate version of our gameplay demo. We changed up the time of day, the weather, and the dynamic events, and Deacon uses a completely different strategy to take on the Marauder camp, this time going in with guns blazing. For those of you who can't make it to E3, don't worry: in the next few weeks we'll be uploading that gameplay video as well.

Sup Bruce have not seen you in a long time.

Sony heard feedback that people want more gameplay, less talk... and took it too seriously.

Now it was just boring. A reel of already announced games.

And Skyrim. I think we've reached a point where showing Skyrim at E3 should earn a badge of shame.

Yea they need to find out what went wrong with this year's stream. Easily the worst quality i've experienced in recent memory.

The Inpatient

No new announcements, specifically from Sucker Punch.

* I'm not as excited about Detroit as I was about Heavy Rain and Beyond: Two Souls, because those two had more interesting themes. I've enjoyed Quantic Dream's previous games though, so it's likely that I'll buy it as well.

I came into this e3 thinking it'd be one of the best in years but it's been a pretty huge letdown. I still think (so far) Ubi had the most fun conference.

I was impressed by Sony's games games games approach, kept things flowing really well. Little surprises, almost everything is 2018 too. But some great looking games.

I'd say it was a mediocre conference, same as MS. You can't always outdo yourself every single year, there's gotta be ups and downs. Though i really liked that no one except Shawn Layden talked, and only for a couple of minutes. And the best thing that came out of the conference was SOTC remaster. That's a day 0 for me.

Quite strange we're having one of the best gaming years but all of E3 looks sub-par, probably because most of the stuff everyone's working are not up to the level it can be shown.

Bethesda from this year? If I am remembering correctly, Pete Hines went on stage only twice. When the conference started and when it ended. The rest was that wacky Bethesdaland video playing. I most certainly wouldn't want that coming back.

As for Sony, in 2016 they did an approach where they let the content speak for itself rather than walk you through it with someone speaking. I don't think there is anything wrong with that approach so long as you actually have worthy enough content that cans peak for itself. The issue being, what they had to present wasn't impressive enough to really do that. And thus, the audience and everyone at home is kind of just staring mindlessly as the trailers are flying by.
