Phil Spencer: "Not a fan of marketing deals with exclusive content"

I'm struggling to remember any Msoft exclusive content deals since Phil took over. I also remember that Rise of the Tomb Raider, which kind of goes against this sentiment?

People change I guess. I have to imagine they would have no trouble getting exclusive content deals if they want them.
You mean since they started trailing massively?

They invented this type of thing, separating themselves from it now that it's hard to get is funny

Part of the big Eurogamer interview. This is indeed a worrying trend IMO, at least content that is permanently locked away from other platforms.

He is so full of shit. They did this all throughout the last generation and into this generation. The only reason he is saying this now is because they don't have any deals like this lined up and its good PR to come out against it since Sony is still doing it. I don't for one second believe that if the Destiny 2 offer had come to them that they wouldn't have done it themselves.

Let's not forget how many timed 'exclusives' they have this time around or what they did with Tomb Raider just 2 years ago. It's as if his pants are literally on fire as hes saying this.

It's getting harder to respect Phil, he seems more like a corporate shill then ever before.

Apart from Rise of the Tomb Raider has any notable example of this actually happened under Spencer's leadership of Xbox or....?

But paying to keep games off another platform for limited time is ok, right Phil?

Not saying the Destiny situation is ok, because it's not, but this is typical Phil speaking from both sides of his mouth.
Yeah? At least when you get to play the game it's the full experience.

The extra content with Destiny is beyond anything ever done. Exclusive from taken king are still locked out and they have said won't be available till Destiny 2 if at all.

Honestly though playing and owning it on both the crap ain't worth it. The gear was nothing special the strike and PVP map suck and the weapons are not needed at all.

But because of this deal I won't be double dipping again enough is enough.

This is where journalists illustrate their incompetence as well. Instead of following that up by illustrating instances where Microsoft instigated the very thing he's purportedly not a fan of, the journalist just moves on.

Yeah I'm curious as to what his answer to this would be.

He is so completely and utterly full of shit. What about their FIFA deal that they just lost with Legends. This is nothing but spoiled grapes about not being able to get the deals they used to be able to get. Just shut up for a while Phil.

MS has done this in years past plenty of times so there is hypocrisy here, but that is a very different thing than full games. For major games these deals typically allow devs to focus optimizing for one machine and the console partner often brings in new funding options for the game's development. Plus other stuff like helping with online infrastructure and testing etc.

So there they basically step in and try to pay in exchange for focusing on their sku and making it as good as possible. That is materially quite different than stuff where it is clear that the content is likely being artificially blocked. I doubt the Destiny 2 PvP level or the strike or the gear/weapon are items that benefit one bit from Sony's cooperation.

Lol so if someone changes for the better its bad now? Do you honestly believe they wouldnt get exclusive stuff for mordor and ac? Sure a big Part of the reasoning behind this is because the deals are more expensive, but its good that they dont do this stuff anymore. If they go backwards on this, then we should give them shit for it.

i cant think of any other fifa was before him as well. tomb raider was shitty but at least the game came in one piece. console exclusive strikes is about as anti consumer ss it gets when it comes to paid content.

Personally as a consumer I have never liked them but it makes perfect sense from a business perspective. It gives you a huge leg up on the competition with the mainstream market for relatively low cost. If anything MS got caught sleeping at the wheel. How do you allow your competitor to get marketing rights to virtually all the big games this gen? EA Access has masked many of their shortcomings in this area.

To call them journalists makes a mockery of the term. They need to keep on games companies good side to keep access.

Love to see the likes of the BBC or Metro have an interview as I doubt they'd turn a blind eye to the most obvious retorts.

I wouldn't mind his hypocrisy if it wasn't so blatant that he couldn't help but show in over a single 10 minute interview.

"I don’t know what deals get written. I’ve been pretty open about, I’m not a fan of doing deals that hold back specific pieces of content from other platforms. You don’t see that in the deals we’ve done with Assassin’s and Shadow. We’ll have a marketing deal on those, but I don’t say, hey, I need some kind of Strike or skin somebody else can’t play.

5 minutes earlier...

They're for a large set of the customers. It's why having 42 games on our stage was critical, and a broad set of games, from Super Lucky's Tale to Minecraft to Anthem to Metro. We showed 42 games, 22 with console exclusivity that's going to play across the whole Xbox One line.

Nevermind that like 7 of those games are legit exclusives, including their own 1st party titles.

We should give them shit then because the conference ended recently. Jeez, why people forget about it so fast

Phil you shouldn't be making marketing deals in the first place. How about turning over every dime your division gets to spend and fucking worry about some first party games instead ?

Wasn't like 80% of their conference "console launch exclusives" (a.k.a timed exclusives)???

I mean, I agree with what he is saying but under these circumstances it just feels like a lame atmept to get some positive PR.

Hmm, marketing deals that are locking away an entire game (either timed, or permanent) vs marketing deals that are small and usually inconsequential to the enjoyment of a game. I don't like either tbh. But it seems an odd hill to die on just to try and gain the moral highground.

Trust me they would love to have the deals that Sony has and I'm pretty sure they tried. Can't get the right deals anymore because you're not the market leader and getting outsold 2 to 1.

But they do both lol
