Joss Whedon’s leaked ‘Wonder Woman’ screenplay is mindblowingly sexist

He was just a naive 41 year old. So much growing up left to do.

Weren't we all that naive when we were 41?

Never to late to change. Espically since critics and the people writing movies have become more aware of their sexism in 11 years since the rise of mainstream feminism. Don't let anyone find out you did something wrong on the internet as a public figure though, the holy "never did or said anything regrettable" crusaders will never get over it.

Something seems off. Whedon sure ain't perfect but I am having a hard time taking this at face value.

Could be his true colors.

Correct and the woman was a monster because she can't make no babies. You don't see how that's a tad sexist?

I'm sure it wasn't the intention in the WW script either. It doesn't have to be intentional to be an issue

This is ... incorrect.

Whedon can come off as sort of a doof. I've seen some stuff he's said that makes me not a huge fan of his, and this script doesn't really surprise me much

Apparently he's a super nice guy but idk

Someone make this man an anime director ASAP.

But Joss was still defending his script when the first Wonder Woman trailer came out, so if it's the real deal then he clearly hasn't changed his perspective very much.

If that's what you took from that you need to stop watching movies while you're on your damn phone.

She's a monster because she's a killer. Or did you miss all the flashbacks of her training to be an assassin, complete with "graduation" of murdering somebody with a bag over their head.

Um or you know she's a monster because she's a highly trained killing machine....

Yeah that was my point. That additional part doesn't need to be there to add her character into the whole "we're all monsters" theme

Its not a good explanation for the addition.

Frank Miller's script for All-Star Batman, also known as one of the most trashy and mean-spirited books DC has ever put out.

Also featured in the comic: Batman attempting to force traumatised Dick Grayson to eat rats whilst throwing molotov cocktails at criminals.

"It'll drive them crazy, Jim."

lmao what is this shit? It's not the most sexist tripe I've read, but the awareness of it is so juvenile.

Joss Whedon and Max Landis should make a script together, watch the film get made by someone else, then complain for years together about how much better their idea was.

I'd have to read the script but when I prep I usually ignore all stage direction. If the story is good irrespective of the sexism the movie will always be different than the script. A movie is a whole other interpretation.

I mean, it's another point of comparison with Bruce, who can't have children either.

He's not as woke as he thinks he is.
I know he is only an ally as far as we (women) can throw him. That said, I would at least hope that the full script tries to make some ill conceived point rather than just be masturbatory.

To be clear, I'm not sure he was ever defending the script (he just says his version of the movie), he also said he didn't think the script was quite there when he departed and we don't know what draft this script was.

It could be that this is his final pass of the movie and Joss stands by it or it's a junk draft that radically changed. I dunno.

I'm not against calling out Frank on ALL of his shit (and there is a shit load of it) but its low hanging fruit at this point. We all know what Frank Miller is at this point, unfortunately he still has his large fan base that likes him for this shit.

This Joss stuff is semi-new to me though, how blatant it is. I always thought his treatment of BW could have been better in the Avengers movies, especially AoU but it seemed more of a generic hollywood problem.

Not to tale away from the point of it being a sexist script, but this quoted part of the article stuck out to me:
Diana’s introduction is the first warning sign, describing her “curvaceous” body instead of her thoughts or personality.
That's to be expected, because scripts are only meant to describe what you can see. Describing a character's thoughts and personality as they're introduced would be the mark of incredibly amateur screenwriting.

Oh! Well, there you go. She was just building the list

Am I monster?

I don't think the fact she can't have kids was what she was using for the monster comparison but saw it as something similar between the two of them, but I'm actually on my way to the store and I see you're out of straws, want me to buy a pack so you can grasp at them?

Right. Bruce specifically talks about how he shouldn't get with Natasha because he can never have a family, and she's like "well I can't either so that's no reason"

Well, this was the point I started out with so I guess you could get me a really big straw cause this one is getting a little ragged from people pawing at it.

It's there because Bruce is worried about having kids, she tells him she can't have any anyway.

Intention matters if you keep harping on "omg Whedon is so sexist".

Ah, hypocrisy.

Sure, if he did indeed write it. We’re not even sure what version of the scrip this is or what was added by who. It’s pure assumption. It doesn’t read like Joss. He’s not perfect but this script is trash. This would have been after he worked on Serenity, and I don’t feel his female characters were written anywhere close to this.

But keep pushing that narrative.

Boy I feel like I slipped into a different timeline. I'm not SUPER familiar with Joss outside of Buffy but I was always under the impression that he was very respectful of women

Wow, I can't believe he wrote this for a thing that wasn't made.
