Steamdb has a good top list with a sane ranking system.

It has Contradiction in the top 100 so you know it's quality.

For info, I have written the rank of Contradiction for various values of alpha:
  • alpha>=10^10 => Contradiction is 99th
  • alpha=10^6 => Contradiction is 27th
  • alpha=10^5 => Contradiction is 185th
  • alpha=10^0 => Contradiction is 210th

Edit: Ranks corrected since we use 1 in real life for the first rank, instead of 0 as in programming.

For info, I have written the rank of Contradiction for various values of alpha:
  • alpha -> infinity => Contradiction -> 98th
  • alpha=10^6 => Contradiction is 26th
  • alpha=10^5 => Contradiction is 184th
  • alpha=10^0 => Contradiction is 209th
This is a good and scientific approach for finding the correct value for alpha.
Maybe you could get even closer to the perfect value using some hillclimbing algorithm! ;)

I was looking for dumb cheap shit and bought Blood and Bacon to play with a buddy. Steam is a wonderful service because holy shit this game is stupidly great.

Actually, this is what I have considered, I have done it more crudely with a grid search.

The best rank for Contradiction is 22, which is achieved for alpha~10^(6.45). Since one has to choose alpha one way or the other, this could be the procedure which suits your tastes the better. This would result in the following top 25 hidden gems:

Any other ranking procedure would require to change the formula for the criterion, but I doubt one could find something both simpler and still tweakable.

I'm one of the few weirdos that don't really get Binding of Isaac. Where most people love the art style, I find it really ugly. I also hate the way the main character fires, the projectiles move reeeeally slow...

I wish I liked it, because it looks like everyone has so much fun with it. Maybe it's just not for me :(

Took me a while too before i got used to it.

I should give the game another whirl lol 😂

I've only played the flash version and I heard it got hugely improved with Rebirth, but still, I don't know if it will be enough to change my mind...

...

Oh crap, the sale will end in less than an hour. Now I don't know if I should give this a try. Help me, gaf!

I never really liked the art style, but damn it has to be one of my favourite games ever. I have over 400 hours, and there is still plenty for me to do. There are a few things that are annoying, some of the bosses at early levels just being bullet sponges is the worst. But when you get going it is so much fun, learning the synergies with all the power ups is amazing, and when you get that crazy run it is the hook that makes you want to come back for more.

Can't you just buy it and return it if you didn't like it?

Trying to find hidden gems: I have ranked the top rated games based on a simple criterion (Wilson score times a decreasing function of the players total). There is one parameter (alpha) which can be tweaked. When alpha goes to infinity, the ranking is solely based on the Wilson score. So, basically, the higher the alpha, the less hidden the games. The top 20 games are shown below for different values of alpha. I say the games corresponding to alpha equal to 1.0 are pretty well-hidden. What do you think?

Almost considered hidden gems:

Hidden gems:

Truly hidden gems:

I appreciate your work, only first list consists of all games I've played or know of, so that's not a hidden gems list.

Now second and third have some games I haven't heard of, so researching now.

edited: well, those games I didn't know of are EA and VR, both of no interest to me, so no wonder, but I did wishlist one game from those list, so I consider your effort a success.

I don't know if I've ever seen anybody gushing over the artstyle. It's your standard Team Meat stuff, but it's hardly the big draw of the game. I kind of suffer through it for the gameplay.

Yes, your shots start out fairly slow and weak, but that's kind of the point. You get used to how they fire pretty quickly, and there are so many different items in the game that can drastically alter how they fire that you kind of need to start out slow and wimpy to really appreciate some of those runs where you end up firing all sorts of craziness by the end.

Thanks.

I am glad it helped, but even otherwise, the reason for my effort is mostly to come up with a simpler procedure with fewer magical numbers and tweaking than the procedure described in http://www.gamasutra.com/blogs/Bill...e_Steam_games_and_digging_for_Hidden_Gems.php... and to mess up with some Python.

that's a very nice article, it still omits games nobody played that are good, I have quite a few such in mind when reading about lists and how they are still popularity lists even hidden gems ones, like CAVYHOUSE games for example

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
So I've had this feature in mind for quite a while actually but decided it was finally time to sit down and hammer it out. I'm adding a feature to Enhanced Steam that will let users create their own custom profile links that point anywhere they would like.

In the settings:

After clicking the "Custom" button:

Then, on user profiles:

This can be customized to use your favorite site as long as it supports urls that use your SteamID64 attribute, just like the ones Enhanced Steam already uses.

What do you guys think?

No Weeklong deals and all special offer games have sales that end on June 22nd...*sniff*....yep...that's the smell of a Steam Summer Sale being cooked up.

Fully destructible environments in XCOM 2 were a great choice. Leads to some wonderful situations.
e.g. Firing a rocket at this building to damage two enemies in it seemed like a straightforward enough choice at the time, but turns later when the Berserker Queen revealed herself, the missing infrastructure proved critical in surviving the mission. It gave some good vantage points for crossfire, as well as a good maze to run through as she chased everyone. Although I will admit, I've savescummed every mission the super aliens show up in due to either bugs or full wipes.

I can't even begin to fathom how people survive (let alone take down) the super aliens in ironman or bronzeman. Their reaction turns (they get a turn for every soldier that takes an action!!!!) mean that they can wipe out a squad in no time flat. Like, the Viper and Berserker ones are terrifying; I'm afraid to see what the last one is...

Are there any safeguards against phishing links? By default, Steam has huge warnings whenever you're leaving their site.

(I don't know what SteamID64 is, in case that is relevant.)

This Thursday will either be:

The best summer Steam sale ever. With flash deals, meta games and amazing discounts that SteamGAF jumps all over instantly.

or

The worst summer sale ever. With no meta game or flash deals. Plus shit deals. 50% off is the new 75% off. 66% off is the new 85% off. and most fucked up thing when publishers bump price of games the night before the sale.

Arent there rumors that at least the "new client" would launch with the sale?

Edit: Also 50% is the new 75% since over 2 years now.

It kind of works, but doing it Silent Storm style would have been so much better.
