BBC: "Colorado to arm teachers in classrooms"

I would have less issue with it if the gun was secured in a safe with a combination or biometric only used by the trained teacher who would only access it in case of a shelter in place situation during an active shooting.

Nah, you're lacking perspective. As a non-American living in a country that functions perfectly fine day-to-day without a 2nd Amendment, I find that the idea of arming civilians who work with children is batshit fucking insane on a fundamental level.

As an American, I find arming civilians batshit fucking insane. Parts of this country are out of their minds and I hope saner minds in Colorado prevail over this insane idea.

Sinister voices say that disarming the population is a plot to make them more dependent on the government, after all, who else can they turn to when they need protection.

I'm a teacher.

I don't want guns anywhere near my classroom. The ONLY acceptable gun in a school is if the district school resource police officer is there.

Hey teacher!! I know you make like 20-30k a year but your ass is now front line defense against a shooter. K thanks

If you hear shots grab that gun and start blasting away!

God bless the USA.

Has anyone taken into account that maybe teachers don't want armed bodyguard on the job description? Are they expected to get into a firefight with an assailant as part of their role?

Yeah, that will fix things! More guns! /s Now officers won't be able to tell who is friend or foe in a crisis. Might as well give the lunch lady a gun.

Yeah this doesn't seem like its going to have dire consequences when some teacher loses it one day. No not at all.

Or when a student gets particularly mouthy an insubordinate. Or when a couple students get into a fight and the teacher "fears for their life." Etc.

Great idea.

Next up: postal workers.

You know, there's an appropriate gif here from the movie Postal but I think I'd rather not post it. :p

America is really far gone when it comes to gun control. Situation is just FUBAR and will never change.

Waiting for the day the cops come for the teacher that's been sleeping with his/her students. Now they gotta deal with someone armed with a classroom full of potential hostages.

What could go wrong

Little murderers will just make a game of seeing how many armed teachers they can get first, teachers will stop focusing on teaching and on targeting dodgy kids, people will get dumber, more guns will somehow be proposed as a solution.

The first 'teacher accidently shot little Jane in the face' incident should be a great laugh for all involved :/

Well if you're going to have them, best to have the teachers at least basics-trained so as to be less likely to make bad decisions in the event of a crisis, right?

Plus the medical training will be good and everyone should take a course like that.

How long till a kid gets shot because he looked like he was reaching for a gun.

Give it a couple months.

Kid will get angry in lesson, start throwing chairs around, teacher (probably younger and inexperienced and thrown into teaching the hardest class in the school because of GOP funding cuts)will get scared shoot them, Fox News will say the kid deserved it for not being calm and rational and also the teacher said three times to sit down.

Prepare for tons of shot black kids that used dehumanising stares, or held up their arms in a threatening manner.

So much freedom, so much paranoia... What a country

It's not like the gun is going to be sitting on a bookshelf so that any kid can just grab it, spin it like a cowboy, and accidentally shoot themselves or others, right?

But who will protect students from a teacher with a gun?

Clearly the only solution is to arm all students too.
Start arming them as soon as they can hold a gun.

How is it that everything I read about the US basically boils down to "republicans won". How can this happen? Guns at a fucking school???? Jesus Christ, America! You're fucked up!

This is even worse than the idea of having armed guards or police officers. There is no way a teacher is qualified to deal with an active shooter and engage in a gun fight. There is no way a teacher can be expected to follow rules of engagement. Its only a matter of time before some innocent kid gets shot by a teacher.
