Baby Driver (dir. Edgar Wright) |OT| All You Need Is One Killer Track

https://youtu.be/A8wwAXaSO0o

Didn't know I wanted to watch movie trivia with Edgar Wright and Jon Hamm before this.

lol that was great. thanks for sharing

The more I think about this the more I get disappointed, not because the movie was bad - but because the sound mixing in the movie or my specific theater was off and it was hard to hear the songs match up with the action.

Gonna watch it again on blu-ray and see how it holds up.

I had an AWESOME experience when I saw it at a Dolby Theater in LA. It's absolutely true it can make or break many of baby drivers scenes.

Well constructed movie and the setpieces, editing, music, and acting are pretty great but man the writing here is all over the place.

All this talk of Baby getting his comeuppance only for him to get his picturesque ending, the women in this movie being written horribly, the strange handling of the doc/buddy characters that make either of them seem like they are actually affectionate towards Baby only to later show differently...and then flip flop again.

When Baby is driving or the music is blaring the movie is fun but damn, some of the choices in here weigh the movie down now that I think back on it.

Oh, y'all can call me no fun or whatever but the first half of the movie, every time some song came on and it was a minute of Elgort mugging for the camera the movie came to a complete halt. Wright really needed to tone it down with that shit, we get it, Baby loves music, once you see he never takes off his damn headphones it's pretty apparent Wright.

Pretty fun in the theater but still the worst Wright movie I've seen.

Scott Pilgrim stay winning.

Drive stay winning even harder.

Same here!!!

The sound in my theater was below average, was kinda frustrated since it was a, "music video", type of film. Not having it blast in your face made it noticeable and lacking. I need the blu ray now!

drive is a movie where a race car manager buys a car because it has good tires lmao

Absolutely loved it, just fun the whole way through, with a great forward momentum constantly in the film. The editing was sublime.

I'll definitely be seeing it again.

I agree.

Definitely a movie lover's film - a total movie fantasy world and characters, beautiful use of colour and the steadicam, forward momentum through really creative editing.

Fucking excellent, definitely gonna write impressions later. Got an applause at a fairly full theater which was nice to hear for a Wright movie.

I'm no huge fan of Drive, but I agree with him on many of those points. My girlfriend who I saw it with also wasn't a huge fan of how the female characters were written, which was something I didn't immediately notice. Between
Baby's mom's death inspiring some of his actions, Monica's death inspiring Buddy's actions, and even Deborah being eager to run down the cops before Baby stops him
I can definitely see the argument that a lot of the females in this film are just there to be sacrificed for the benefit of the males' storylines.

Well I saw it in Edgar Wrights favorite Cinema in London and one of his favorites period. I love to go there because its always perfectly calibrated sounds that is fucking loud as hell. Massive screen. Brilliant seating. A bunch of great bars and cafes in it too.

But man I think the music was just too loud, it started to blare. I said it before I thought the soundtrack was pretty boring and tired.

I agree, Ansel mugging it for the camera was annoying. And why make it all cliched old school Americana, diner 50s shit? So tired. If you're Steven King, you can do that shit as long as you want. Everyone, else. Stop.

Baby should've been an actual young person. Not a proxy for an old white man. He doesn't feel like a real person existing in a real place. Just a slightly cliched hollywood facade.

Saw it last week, I enjoyed. Not on the level of Hot Fuzz, but here's what I liked:

1. The soundtrack is worth the price of admission. Just a 30 track list that's this well curated and deep in an area I know little about. I've been listening to it all week.

2. Attention to detail and a real director. Most comedies these days get some funny people(or not) in a room and film them talking to each other. Nothing visually interesting or stimulating, a majority of it is improv. Any kind of action is almost always in the it's so cringing bad it's funny. Here's a video on this subject that's also mostly about Wright.

3. The second half is captivating. The plot is more than a little rote and it struggles to find rhythm early because of it, there's a number of cheap moments to tie it together(when Baby backs up a car in the mall parking lot right into
his two remaining crew members, thereby bringing the cops back on them and effectively killing one
is groaning bad), but I still think it picks up enough momentum by the end.

4. It's funny.

He doesn't feel like a real person existing in a real place.

I think you've done missed the point. It's a borderline musical, did you see the first scene after the opening?

Loved the movie. Would probably rank Wright's work as

1) Hot Fuzz (definitely his best)
2) Shaun of the Dead
3) Baby Driver
4) World's End
5) Scott Pilgrim

I have rewatched all but Baby Driver multiple times. Every rewatch of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead I'll notice a joke being set up early in the film, making the pay off more satisfying. Reading this thread I see there's multiple set ups for Baby Driver too, making me excited for the rewatch. World's End also has many hidden jokes.

Scott Pilgrim is by a margin Wright's weakest for me (still a fantastic movie, mind you). I think it's a movie which clicks with US audiences more than UK.

Really hope Wright moves on to mode Cornetto movies with Pegg soon.

None of it is supposed to feel real. It's pretty stylized fantasy version of reality.

Monica is alright but that's about it really. Deborah is just a blank. She serves the role as the girlfriend and thats it. Nothing about her was interesting at all.

Theyre meant to feel like real characters not that they or the movie has to be realistic in those depictions.

I get Baby is a quiet brooding hero, not necessarily tons there. Which is why little details can bring a character to life. Everything about Baby just felt fake and blank. His unironic love of only old things feels especially outdated and false.

Has Baby not listened to any music in the last 20 years? Also a bit disturbing he wants to fuck a girl who represents his mother.

There are valid criticisms of the movie but I think concerning yourself with why Baby doesn't listen to more modern music misses the point completely.

I thought where they stood was pretty clear.
Doc needed Baby in the game to run his whole operation because he knew he was nothing without him, so he made threats when Baby wanted to leave, but he always did have affection for Baby, seen throughout the movie.
He was just a hard ass crime boss. Buddy is a much outwardly warmer guy, and he liked Baby too, but obviously that all changed when his girlfriend was killed.
They were all pretty suspicious of Baby when he was driving out at 2 AM and it was revealed he was recording their conversations, which I think is justified.

That would be perfectly agreeable if not for the opinion that honestly, some stuff didn't feel so fake. Bats felt like he was ripped out of "The Wire" while everyone else wouldn't feel out of place in a video game.
They had no problem showing a person get stuffed in a trunk with a bullet to keep him company for making mistakes during a job, had no problem showing us shots of innocent security people being killed (something that wouldn't have felt out of place in a straight crime movie), and contrast that to the action scenes where things just feel gamey, again. Then they go and give us that candy-sweet ending, for example.

Its like there's several "styles" in there and rather than make harmony, the movie just feels like its constantly clashing with itself. The identity is all over the place.

The women in the movie are not much if anything but auxillery. Monica/Darling is Buddy/Jason's lover. That's about it, she's a "crazy latina" like that's her character trait and that's shitty. Deborah is Baby/Miles' girlfriend who took care of a sick mom and works a shitty job while wanting to leave. Not much depth either.

I dunno, I know plenty of kids my age that obsess over old music and culture. Shopping for vinyls and the like. But I understand what you're saying.

Yeah it's weird Baby wants to get with someone who reminds him of his mom

Also, what the fuck is the accent goin on with Elgort in this movie

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Saw it last night. Really enjoyable movie. Great cast, awesome action and music plus the dialogue was hilarious at times.

The funniest bit that I still chuckle over is when they're going through the plan:

Doc: I need you two to roleplay
Darling: We roleplay a lot
Doc: ... Uh-huh

Kevin Spaceys deadpan cant find a single fuck to give response to her enthusiasm had me rolling.

Jon Hamm was awesome and I loved what they did with his character. Jamie Foxx was good albeit a bit predictable, would have liked some surprises with him like Jon Hamm's character. I liked Ansel Elgort for the most part too, would like to see him in more movies.

Awesome movie, saw it last sunday.

The nephew of Doc was hilarious. I love the soundtrack in this movie. Its fantastic.

Watching it again today with a different group of people. They were incredulous at the title of the movie and I told them to shut up let's watch it. They haven't seen any other Edgar Wright movies before.

Hopefully they like it.

The movie is fun as fuck. The crew in the diner is the tensest shit.

I thought the same thing. Bats giving the speeches before each scene was nuts too. Made that dude feel like people I know in real life that give me that uneasy feeling.

There were parts so tense I was shaking.

Didn't like the ending. It feels like it ends twice,
driving over the bridge would be fine, fits better. We don't learn anything from the prison scenes. Baby behaves and makes parole in five years. We already know he would do this. We're told all the shit about him in the trial as if we missed it the first time. And it's weird this waitress who has known the guy for two days before watching him murder a dude in a parking garage full of dead bodies would wait half a decade to see him again. It's a fantasy, but there is no need even to introduce that leap.

Any scene with Jamie Foxx was fucking tense. Butt clenching tense.

This is the first movie where I was actually scared of Foxx. He played a more convincing psychopath than when he was Electro.

Jamie Foxx was terrifying in this. I was telling my friend after we don't see enough criminals who are just unhinged and give off the impression of being extremely dangerous like that. Every time he was on screen you tensed up

Just got back from this. Went in with some tempered expectations about the final third based on this thread, but I actually really enjoyed it.

Have to say Jamie Foxx crushed it in this film. Hamm was solid too. I actually thought everyone was pretty solid for portraying their relatively limited characterization.

I think they could have skipped
the trial sequence at the end - like other people have said in this thread, I don't think we needed a Chrono Trigger-style testimony thing
but in the end I don't think it really hurt the movie.

I totally forgot this was filmed and based in Atlanta. But the lack of traffic was totally unrealistic. It was fun pointing out all of my old hangout spots in the ATL.

The movie was better than I expected, totally not like an Edgar Wright film. Since I've yet to see Hot Fuzz, this is probably my second favorite film of his.

And I think I have a crush on the waitress. Reminded me way too much of Madchen Amick's character from the original Twin Peaks.

Not used to seeing Jamie Foxx in roles like this. He bothered me throughout, but in a good way.

The part I loved about the recap is
how we first think "oh, well, I guess he's gonna get off then." Instead, he gets 25 goddamn years, and is lucky to get out in five.
The movie pulls the rug out, though it doesn't have the mean streak to really make that mean much. I enjoyed the small flip all the same.

Saw it today, really loved it.

However, I connected deeply with the soundtrack, I love Edgar Wright, driving/cars, and southern belles. There wasn't a chance I wasn't going to enjoy it.

That said, it's a pretty unique movie in tone. I'm thinking of seeing it again to catch stuff I missed/support it.

Oh and I thought all the big actors did really well, they were fun to watch on screen together.

I enjoyed the movie throughout but I can't say I was ever invested in the plot or characters. I thought Ancel Elgort lacked the charisma to pull off such a quiet, stoic character. He wasn't bad or anything, just a bit bland.

That said, the sheer energy and fun of the filmmaking kept me entertained.

Yea he was real good, the interesting thing I find in this movie is that they seemingly setup the antagonists to maybe become a ally or friend to baby, they each had a personal scene where they talked to baby about stuff or humored him and etc.
Especially
buddy and darling, they were really pushing the two as the two that understood him most, but ofcourse jamie as bats/leon had to be the wildcard
