I'm definitely not a "4D chess" guy but this same pattern keeps playing out. Trump gives incredulous interview to media organization he claims is "fake news" -> proceeds to do exactly the incredulous thing that he lays out in interview -> congressional Republicans handwave.

Let's see if it goes differently this time.

I think there's a difference between a plan and not having any reservations about this because you know you won't be punished. Even with the investigation, Trump's probably more worried about stuff coming out into the public than he is about facing consequences.

He doesn't actually have the ability to fire him directly. He'll have to fire Rosenstein, most likely fire Sessions and then promote someone within the Justice department that will fire Mueller. I don't expect a single raised eyebrow from the Republican leadership either if he does it.

Several republicans, mostly in the senate have repeatedly said they feel safe and assured with mueller, with a few targeted responses towards the white house. seemingly implying to not fuck with mueller

When Nixon did the Saturday night massacre it was a turning point for the republican leaders mainly because they got deluged with letters that were 16 to 1 against what he did.

If trump does this and the right wing media machine revs up and the base doesn't shift much against him then GOP will find a way to just be mildly concerned.

Just hoping mueller has a backup for what he had found that can be leaked. If we are going to hell under trump at least everyone should know what illegal acts a good chunk of Americans have agreed to allow.

That would be immediately challengeable in court and we know how those things have gone for Trump.

It would be far easier for him to do what Nixon did and just keep firing and promoting within the Justice Dept. until he finds someone to do the deed.

As Schiff already threatened, all they have to do is re-pass the expired watergate-era independent counsel legislation and appoint Mueller as the prosecutor. Trump can grand stand all he wants, he does not want to fire Mueller and lose all oversight he has over this investigation.

A few months before the election I asked one of my Trump supporting co-workers what they thought made him qualified to be President. His response was that Trump is a self made man that pulled himself up by his own bootstraps (I'm paraphrasing here for effect but that's what he meant). I responded to him that Trump was born rich and would be richer had he just left his inheritance in the bank but I got immediately told that I didn't know what I was talking about. I'm from NYC and have know about Trump since I was a kid and this guy is from NC and only knows about him from The Apprentice and Fox News.

The common Republican just projects onto Trump what they want him to be whether that is a self made man or a competent President.

Uh. I think you guys are too optimistic that the republicans will do anything to trump. Sure it looks bad but they'll ignore it like everything else. He's done so many other things that are politically suicide and nothing has happened I'm curious why people think this would do anything other than look bad.

Yeah, I just worry that Schiff was a touch optimistic. The House kept finding ways to not let the sanctions bill through, even with huge bipartisan support there's ways to kill bills. Ryan would have to really stick his neck out to do it though.

I've been puzzling over this portion, and I think he's confusing health insurance with life insurance, which is something he's done before.
