Anno the last half decade.

I'd expect nothing less!

Screw the movies, just read this instead

[Giant Re-Take image]

Re-Take is probably one of the strongest reasons to watch Rebuild. It doesn't make them any better movies, of course, but it's a splendid curiosity how well a several-years-prior work of fan fiction works as a companion piece / point of contrast to Eva's official continuation. You can take their similarities as an indication that Rebuild's reading of Eva is a good one (because others have read it the same way), or you can take their differences on certain key points (such as Asuka) as an indication that Rebuild missed its mark. Not to say that either one of those is right, but the two works are much more interesting as a pair than either is alone.

I've never heard of Re-take until now. I think the idea of continuing from the End of Eva flies in the face of the intention of End of Eva.... it's the damn end of the world.

Also Shinji x Asuka ship? Uh. No.

Ok then don't read it. Missing out, though.

I mean, Rebuild is a sequel, too. It just isn't quite as plain about it as Re-Take.

Re-Take's greater focus on Asuka over Rei is also part of what makes it interesting to compare to Rebuild. Re-Take follows or echoes the manga (which had a greater focus on Rei) in various points, but Re-Take ends up going with Asuka. Rebuild follows the TV series (which had a greater focus on Asuka), but then Rebuild prioritizes Rei. Both works have strong motifs of "starting over", "it'll be different this time", etc., and it's expressed in opposite ways through the heroines.

I'm not saying I wouldn't read it, just that I feel those plot points misread several truths about Eva.

Like, Asuka wouldn't actually fuck Shinji in a million years. Her teasing a kiss in the series is entirely a move designed to satiate her bruised ego.

But this is a series that has a variety of official alternative versions so as long as it's a conscious change from the original.... fine. I just hope the author didn't actually think the series was hinting in this direction >:)

But it's not though, that's the actual point.

The whole thrust of End of Eva is that it is clearly the end of the story and for the universe in general. I realize that Shinji and Asuka survive... but we're not to assume they went on to have adventures the next day. I don't want to see anything beyond that point. (sure I'd read a doujin "what if", but I don't think that's the implication of the canon original).

It sounds interesting from a story exploration standpoint.

But it's not what would have actually happened >:)

You know what's crazy?

I made a decision not to watch this until the full remade series is complete.

Three movies later, I'm still going strong. Almost at the home stretch for this to complete.
I know people do this when they think the movies are going to add up to one cohesive whole. Like I'm sure the Star Wars sequel trilogy will add up like this.

But these Eva movies have been such odd beasts. Each one being so different from the others, and each one exponentially leading us further away from the original story. So much so, that I think they are best approached one at a time, not as a whole.

To each their own, though!

I disagree. 3.0 is too much of a mess to stand on its own. It really needs a continuation to save it.

Ok, I remember borrowing and watching a friends set of NERVE vhs tapes. What was that in relation to this and how do I watch it all front to back again? Is there a difference between 3.0 and 3.33? Is there a 1.11 and 2.22 for that matter?

I'm interested.

Boy, sure can't wait to see this movie in 2022.

I don't know if I can even be excited for it. I didn't hate the third film, but it was certainly a step-down from the first two.

You probably saw the original anime series.
What's being discussed here (Rebuild of Evangelion) is a tetralogy of movies that started as a pretty faithful remake of the series with the first one, but distanced itself more and more from the source as the sequels came out. By now, it's almost completely different.

If you're interested, you can watch 1.11 (or 1.01, which is basically the same), 2.22 and 3.33.

1.0-3.0 are the original versions, 1.11-3.33 are updated versions with extra footage or refined animation. Just stick the the latter, I don't think 3.0 even had a home release.

Like I've said before, I bet this will come out before Winds of Winter.

And 3.33 was amazing, I can't believe how many of you hated it.

not me
Because they still get upset when Anno fucks with them. It's like they've learned nothing.

2.0 was Anno fucking with people and people loved it. Going for the killshot on Asuka, starting Third Impact and having Kaworu arrive halfway through the damn Rebuild, there's so much subversion of a TV series fan's expectations. It's a huge part of what draws people to 2.0, not just Shinji finally growing a backbone. Character motivations are also clear and understandable.

3.0 fucks with people and is also a bad movie. That's why people were upset. Character motivations make no sense (the entire character dispositions of Misato and Asuka are gigantic misfires). Important events necessary to following what's going on are poorly explained or unexplained (don't get me started on the excuse that we are supposed to be in Shinji's shoes. That's a very dangerous play and unless you are an expert at that kind of very limited viewpoint exposition, it's going to fail, which it did). We get another fucking retread of the Rei arc. For a movie so many claim subverts expectations, it seems deadset on now-cliche retreads when it comes to character arcs. The real subversion was 2.0 Shinji getting shit done or 2.0 Asuka having empathy. Now Shinji is getting dragged around again.

4.0 can fix some of this, but it can't fix all of it.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Maybe it's 3.0+1.0 because it ignores 3.33 entirely and continues directly from 2.0.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I figured it out.

After that = 3.0 = the next part of the story
THE END = 1.0 = the finale/epilogue

Not = every movie had the word (not) in the subtitle = 3.0 portion
Anti = must refer to the 1.0 portion of it

(3.0+1.0)/5.0 ARG

2.0 was also more popular because it was a bit more actiony/epic with a more heroic Shinji. Dat last scene.
It also has the best soundtrack.
Rebuild 1 was mostly retreading the original and this included the music.
Rebuild 2 introduced a lot of "epic", fresh music which mirrors how the movie diverges from the show.
Rebuild 3 had a bit of an odd soundtrack, which left me disappointed at first, much like the movie.

Okay I feel that I need to explain the terrible gibberish English. I shouldn't have to. But Khara failed, and I don't want to see people speculate and make jokes on bad English.

The first part of the poster says "A continuation, and then the conclusion." It's pretty obvious that it refers to how the next movie is assumed to be the last one. The second part of the poster is more vague and harder to translate elegantly without know the "secret" intended context, but I'll say it'll probably fit as "A mistake, and so we must oppose." This is Anno so I can't say I know exactly what it is intended to refer to, but the surface reading is very clearly meant to suggest that they are aware fans didn't like 3.0 and it could suggest a sort of redo or retcon.
