Hell at Tesla

Elon has been vocal about his goal is to automate the entire manufacturing process. Trying to unionize at this point could likely accelerate his plans.

This is some weird logic. Workers should be happy with what their "benevolent" billionaire boss gives them and not stand up for themselves because if they make him mad he'll stop feeding them crumbs?

I love this because if this was Ford there'd be less than 1% of the appologism that's rampant in here.

This is the absolute truth right here.

Is like the iphone birth history. Those tech new things don't came without people giving your personal life in exchange.

Oh how I love stats and how the masses eat them up. All you need to do is throw a comparison out against the industry as a whole and everyone eats it up. What about a comparison against other new lines or new car models. All workers have I higher injury rate doing something new. The industry as a whole has workers that have been doing the same work for what decades, this will of course have lower injury rates. As usual its much better for headlines to make a bogus comparison than a valid one. I love the sawmill and slaughter house comparison, talk about nonsense.

Skel1ingt0n

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
And meanwhile they pay people less and put them at greater risk of injury.

What does this have to do with the thread? They're far below the manufacturing standards set by the rest of the industry. They can make ripples in the industry without mistreating their employees.

What does this little advertisement have to do with their poor working conditions?

What does this have to do with the horrible working conditions?

Shit, shit, shit... I misinterpreted the OP's comments. Apologies.

My comment had nothing to do with the thread link at hand. Sorry!

Now what's the next step in your master plan?

So they're doing something new so that's that?

People in new jobs have higher injury rates then experienced employees. This is completely normal. There may be issues at Tesla but the data proposed does not prove that. It is a headline for the masses to consume.

I'm not a massive Tesla fan, but I do believe some people woefully underestimate the amount of drive, intelligence, hard work, and luck it takes to even make the tiniest of ripples in the automotive agency. And Tesla is single-handidly leading the charge for consumer adoption of electric vehicles and, arguably, autonomy.

It's a monumental achievement, what they have done.
So what?

I interviewed at Tesla about a year and a half ago for a job in my field - Purchasing/Supply Chain. Mind you I am in middle management at my current job with 10 years experience. I was lead around for 4 months of phone interviews, including an on-site 8 hour rapid fire interview with 12 different people that they flew me out for, and after that had multiple follow up phone interviews, and when the discussion of salary came up and I told them a number that would have been comparable to what I make now adjusted to Bay Area cost of living, I was quickly given the "we have decided to move ahead with someone else" spiel (even tho the position is still vacant as of today). Left a bad taste in my mouth, considering I had to burn 3 days of vacation time for the interview process and they were really cheap when it came to reimbursing expenses.

While I was there I did kind of hear horror stories about the number of hours worked from the people who were interviewing me and the chaos that they are perpetually in due to constant engineering changes. It wouldn't surprise me that the factory side is even worse. They need to change their mindset from being a tech company to being a manufacturer. You can't always be redesigning a product that is in mass production.

I still want a Model 3 though.

and so the union demonization goes on.

I wonder if we're going to get a "these lazy bastards just want to unionize to get more money! they should stop complaining and get to work!" post soon enough.

Well you have hundreds of thousands of anxious Model 3 customers who can't stop asking Musk about when they will get delivery of the car. Tesla's company worth hinges on them delivering those cars on time, and Tesla needs to be successful and profitable in order for Musk's other projects and initiatives to come to fruition.

All of that puts intense pressure on the company and its factory workers.

That puts intense pressure on the management, who in turn puts pressure on the workers.

Unionise and start a strike, you'll see who's panicking first about their jobs and income.

There's already a post stating they want more money so basically they're probably lying about working conditions

Fuck Tesla, fuck Musk and fuck his stupid cars.

A gigantic system of underground tunnels carrying around hugely inefficient motor cars is not the answer to our transportation woes. Public transport and bicycle infrastructure is.

if he's getting his workers injured for self-enrichment then put him in jail.

There just as many cons as pros to unions. I myself would never be part of one. It doesn't suit me and the way I want to work. Many people love that environment.

I'd love to hear you go into more detail about this. How exactly do they not suit you and the way you want to work? What do you do for work?

Even with good training and suprevison new factory lines have higher injury rates. It takes time to flush out issues and make improvements. Higher injury rate at a new line would be expected to be significantly above the national average for an industry. YOu can't just build a new factory and have it run as smooth as one that has been in the business for years with experienced employees.

People aren't forced to work there. If you don't like the job, get another one.

Hopefully Tesla will get it together. Otherwise, they have no one but themselves to blame if their workers unionize.

I need to be under preasure and I love personal incentive driven bonuses. I need to be able to leap frog other people in my career path. I also do not like the idea of paying someone to be my voice I am perfectly comfortable negotiating for myself. Unions make this very difficult. If you like a team all for one environment they probable suit you. If you want to lead and get ahead as an individual then they are not a good fit. Nothing wrong with either.

There is a way to be effective and safe at the same time, they have alot of orders to fill sure, but people need to come home to their family at the end of the day. I've been working in the manufacturing industry for 12 years and the shit Tesla is pulling wouldn't fly here, and how did we get to that point? Unions.

No one has to be happy, but their boss has already said (in so many words) he intends to replace them with machines. I'm not really sure where you go from there.

What do you do for work? Like what's your job title, what industry are you a part of, and what did you go to school/college for (if you did)?

Nah. They're probably going to use machines to replace factory workers too.

All I can think is they want more money. I'm sure it's a tough job, but when money is involved you should really take this stuff with a grain of salt.
Maybe they want more money because they're being underpaid especially for the conditions they're working in? Crazy

Except Musk's literal goal is to raise the bar for electric vehicles and force the Germans and Japanese makers to start innovating again. If those companies crush him, then Musk has accomplished his mission.

The company shouldn't have made promises they couldn't keep while shifting undue burden onto their workers.

Really hope these workers are able to start a successful union. There's no excuse for such poor treatment of workers and such high injury rates.

No, being rewared based on merit and performance not hire date.

Unions don't prevent personal incentives and bonuses. You"re not "negotiating", you're just pushing to get what your boss is willing to give you. What are you going to do on your own? "I want a raise, or else!". You are worth nothing, your threats are meaningless. Your boss can get anyone to do your job and replace you whenever they feel like. Unions level the field: the "or else" actually means something, and brings benefits to the whole corp, not just you.

what a fuck. The dude has more money than god, but can't spare research and development for safer working conditions!? There's no excuse other than pure greed or assholery.

It's a goddamn shame unions aren't what they once were :(

Unions for all workers.

Musk is basically a Republican that believes in climate change.

what a strong and strange overreaction.

As for people asking why are people anti union. Because they protect bad workers and because of some bad propaganda. And some jealousy. Look at athletes holding out for more money 99% of the time the fans turn on that person as if that person has come and pissed in their cornflakes. But in football for instance teams go to players all the time saying take a paycut or we're going to cut you, but the second that player holds out and says i'm underpaid the fans just turn on them.

No sense arguing with a guy that won't even reveal what his job is. Dude is ignoring my questions about that for a reason, because he knows his career is nothing like a blue-collar worker with little negotiating power.

Life is not so simple, there is a lot more to a advancing a career than give me money or else. If times get hard I dont want my hire date causing me to be let go if I am more benificial than someone hired before me. I want to be able to raise the team around me. I want to be able to lead and improve a team. I have no issue with my Boss replacing me, I know my value and worth. I will do my best to make him see that. I don't need the support of the group, I will happily give my support to the group. I personally do not see value in a union. I like to be assesed as an individual but it has nothing to do with fuck you I got mine. I do not make threats to get ahead in the world and would never be part of a group that does. You looking at this in such an us vs them, that is not how I operate.

I'm a software engineer in gaming, but I spent years in factories as a laborer and also as an SE before changing to gaming. I'm not ignoring anything.
