There are people who think BLM is a terrorist group. They're wrong of course, but what happens when you let someone make a judgement call and the person who makes it is one of those people? How do you guarantee that won't happen

Maybe you should try to convince rural white Americans to stop being racist and voting for racist candidates who make false assertions about Black social movements instead of lecturing us on how to not try anything because it might not work.

You don't need someone making a judgement call for banning these though:

That's celebrating genocide. Should be a crime.

Or maybe the US just isn't that super special unlike what you get taught in school. Hate speech laws work. No one has been unfairly attacked under them anywhere else. Sort your shit out.

Btw, still wondering what you were saying about Jim Crow.

In a democracy, the majority writes the laws.

Fuck man, I have some personal soul-searching to do...

Who cares what people think? The law doesn't suddenly bend to popular opinion when it comes to hate speech. How naive are you?

Hate speech laws in America are so nebulous that I wouldn't be surprised if this very thing has happened in the past.

Question:

Is Trump's "all sides" reaction a sign of him being confused, trying to be careful not to complicate matters before consulting his staff, ignorance, or sheer hate?

I find it hard to get to the root of what is going on his head.

To be its very telling he was on the "call it islamic terrorism" boat while Obama was in office but here he will not say "white supremecy" or "bigotry".

BECAUSE NAZIS ARE AN ESTABLISHED THING SINCE THE 1940S AND HAVE NEVER STOOD FOR ANYTHING BUT WHITE SUPREMACY BY KILLING OTHERS!!!

I agree. I just don't agree that singling out Nazis will actually accomplish anything in regards to quelling this type of hate speech, and I think broader hate speech laws would be really easy to abuse in the wrong hands.

I don't have anything against branding neonazi as a terrorist group perse, I'm just not sure that will do a single goddamn thing to stop them

it is telling, it's obvious to anyone with a functioning brain what's going on

They show the swastika, they go to jail. Simples.

Again, I have no problems with naming the nazis a terrorist organization in and of itself, but I honestly don't think specifically calling them out will actually change anything either

Is he acknowledging or downplaying his role in spreading hate with this tasteless tweet?

I assume the latter; he has yet to come off as someone that will accept responsibility for his influences.

He is taking a sarcastic shot at people who called him a Nazi

He saw a news report about a racist rally and a terrorist attack and thought "hmmm, how does this relate to my brand, better use this opportunity to score points against my critics"

He's a really bad person and given how influential he is with so many young people I find myself hoping he forgets to look both ways next time he crosses the street

Twitter and reddit need to take a fucking stand and get rid of Donald on Twitter and get rid of any white nationalist subscribing threads on reddit. It would be a good PR move and I think would actually net them positive new users.

In some ways though these tweets are what is hurting trump most so I dunno. I just don't think they should give him a platform.

It'll stop actual speech in support of them? You know, like the over speech right now?

It'll make them more problematic to support? Push them into the underground again?

Basically, a much better position than Neo-Nazis marching with the flag and being the utter scum of humanity.

The murder is 20 years old. 20. Born 1997. He is another white man that is too incompetent to do anything with his life that at the age of 20 he decides to take the gift of life away from other more compassionate and deserving individuals.

Scum. I hope he rots.
"just wait for the old racists to die"

Why do you keep saying this when it has been constantly refuted? Broad hate speech laws have literally never ever been used to oppress people in democratic countries.

Growing up in France, we're taught from childhood that fuckin nazis are your worst ennemy. I can't understand how they have the right to even assemble. All of you defending their right to free speech are fools. Hate speech is not compatible with civilisation.

The people marching would - to a white man - inter in camps any muslims that spoke even in private with any sympathy for the Islamic state or Isis.

Their love of opinion diversity and free speech extends only to their own nose. For the same reason that you don't invite the the Islamic state into your democracy so they can win and ban elections, you don't let Nazis march.

Disagree with Twitter, his account is the best advertisement against him.

Reddit has no reason to keep the_donald around at all though.

Along with the entire Republican party fostering the growth of this shit and normalizing it. Only to come out now and clutch pearls.

Yep, they can't run from this. What do they think they were doing when they were denying that Obama was American? It was feeding these people and their bullshit belief that "their" country was being stolen from them.

He was referring to Jontron's white supremacist tweets
Yeah, it was going to be that or some GamerGate nonsense. And no, this isn't where you go for the middle you fucking fool. Going for the middle is, like, whether they should spend more on the parks, or the libraries.

How ridiculous is the argument about "we must stick to our principles no matter how poorly they work in practice because those principles will defend us when the wrong people raise to power" in a world where Trump is POTUS and with everything that is happening these days in Charlottesville.

This is the same with that argument about the checks and balances.

And when pointed to places where hate speech laws work say "yeah but someday a white nationalist might come into power and then what..."

He's a really bad person and given how influential he is with so many young people I find myself hoping he forgets to look both ways next time he crosses the street

And I'm sure when he gets called out again, his boy Ethan and the rest of the major youtubers will defend him and claim the mainstream media is out to get youtubers.

Again show me the history of genocide from the BLM movement? There are judgement call and there are facts.

Because Americans think that freedom of speech somehow includes historically genocidal groups of people waving the exact same flag.

Wish we had more brutal reality taught in America, instead History classes tend to go over things in broad strokes.

Remember how the Nazis told Jewish women they'd get double rations if they were pregnant, then took them right to the furnaces?

Want those people to have free speech now?!

Definition of democracy:
plural democracies
1a : government by the people; especially : rule of the majority

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/democracy

Jim Crow: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws

The United States government is run by white supremacists.

The United States is not a democracy, it is a republic. Otherwise Trump would not be president.

They show the swastika, they go to jail. Simples.

And when such a law passes, they'd just immediately rebrand and stop using swastikas. It does nothing to solve the underlying issues. Things like that will take time to become law, and that time will allow them to dodge the problem. And since you can't legally convict somebody of something they did before that act was made illegal, you end up changing nothing

I'm not talking about naming nazis a terrorist organisation. What are you even talking about? Aren't you aware about the history at all? You don't need to label the nazis, they existed in reality and their crimes are well documented. Those are the symbols of a regime that existed and killed millions of people. I don't care about any American organisation whatsoever, showing these symbols in public should be a crime. It's celebrating genocide and a (very real) criminal regime.

Jim Crow: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Crow_laws

The United States government is run by white supremacists.

Keep dreaming. The majority has very limited rule in democratic countries, for better or worse.

Again, how does outlawing hate speech against minorities relate to Jim Crow? You're dodging my question.

remember how we fucked up reconstruction and let a lot of traitors who started a war to keep black people as slaves get federal government positions and statues instead of hanging them and now we have neo-nazis protesting and killing people over removing the statues of those fucks

Fine. My point is to kill the Nazi ideology. We CAN do that. You just seem to be unable to grasp that.

People of color for 150 years: "America is an intensely racist and fucked up country, y'all need to reign that shit in"

Everybody else: "Lol nah it's not that bad, you're exaggerating, besides you'll deal with it right?"

And now the powder keg has been built to the point where shit is going to explode and a lot more people are gonna die.

Only matters when the white folks are doing the dying on this soil. Otherwise it's just black and brown getting out of hand, being contained however it needs to be done, and being used as propaganda tools for these very same evil fucks and their fence sitting brethren.

Given who was on the front line, we should never hear any more crap about how leftists are a malign influence on American politics who should shut up and go away forever ever again.

After today I got in a huge facebook debate and in the end I just decided to cut ties with anyone I know that deflects and tries to defend white supremacy.

The alt-right and White supremacists are the biggest threat to society now.
