What the fuck Sony is doing?!
From first reveal and I feel Sony involvement is poor. They already saw the positive feedback from the announcement why are they so hesitate to support the project?!

From the company that published persona 5 and Yakuza kiwami and had 0 involvement in the production of the games comes another game that will be only be brought out of Japan by them.

Too many damn icons/logo's on that cover, it's obnoxious.
Who was the previous/planned publisher?

Sony isn't involved. Sony 3rd Party Production is.
All am saying Sony should be proactive regarding this game, there is nothing stopping them from getting deeply involved from development support to funding it is fuckin Shenmue one of the most requested game of all time.

Will this mean no Sega products (VF figurines, Hang-on/Space Harrier/Afterburner arcade machines etc.) in Shenmue III then? Or maybe it was never meant to be anyway.

SEGA wouldn't have been able to publish it in Europe anyway. So even if they were an option at some point, it's probably easier to go with a single publisher for everywhere.

Interesting that they would choose a publisher that already has close ties with Sega. People will try to spin this as a negative as they do with all Shenmue 3 business dealings though.

This.

And that's what I'm saying: Sony always was dipping toes here. They never were proactive on the game, hence why it's their 3rd Party Productions studio that is the one involved.

People, gamers and game bloggers, were vocal and kind of soured that public Sony connection to the project... remember all the cries that the Shenmue Kickstarter was a scam, that it was shady, that it needed to be investigated, that it was dishonest as Song was simply going to shower them with money? Trying to openly help out a different kickstarter in the future by giving them the spotlight at a Sony event and some marketing help is not going to be something that they will do again IMHO.

Knowing that Sony was involved and that it may be a console exclusive was generating so much FUD online that it seriously hampered the founding of the project. We will get a lower budget smaller scope/not as polished production values wise game thanks to that... and those screaming for a port may get one of a game not as big as it could and should have been... :/...

How come?
Not familiar with how Sega works, all I know that they were/is a large company and used to publish their own games across the globe.

Deep Silver have published all SEGA games in Europe for a couple of years. SEGA Europe is exclusively a PC publisher now.

That's called concerned trolling. It's too bad it came from some part of the press too, that were suddenly "concerned about the obscure fundings of Shenmue 3".

Except their involvement was generating bad press from the public and ruined the Kickstarter even though they were honest and said “no, we are not financing it...” “support the Kickstarter”... people scoffed, called for investigations and endless questions about the Kickstarter financing and helped a climate in which generally people felt that Sony would have given them all the money the project wanted and thus nobody needed to actually kickstart the project. To this day people are not donating to the PayPal campaign thinking it is a scam and that it is money Suzuki does not need as he has Sony to cover them for it...

I could be wrong but I believe their EU publishing branch is only really equipped to handle digital stuff nowadays. They don't even publish ATLUS games over here even though they own them.

Deep Silver handle ATLUS stuff in EU now so who knows, maybe SEGA even recommended them.

Well, to be fair, the first days have been kinda blurry because of miscommunication from Sony. But let's be honest, Sony isn't the reason why people didn't give more. Awesome Japan, who ran the campaign, are the reason why it could've done better. I mean, it was just amateurish.

I won't play the first 2 games beforehand. I want everything to feel new.

Any good summary videos of the first 2?

It's also likely that if Shenmue 3 does well that SEGA would be interested in being involved in Shenmue 4. No publisher is going to want to take the risk of publishing a game with no guarantee of being able to publish the sequel. Deep Silver is in the unique position of even if SEGA took over for Shenmue 4 they would still be able to publish it in Europe.

Deep Silver is the only publisher of it's size that makes any sense to publish Shenmue 3.

That did not help either, you are very right.

Funny typo in the press release "Hung-on" instead of "Hang-on" near the bottom of the press release under Yu Suzuki heading.

Regarding this publisher news, I will take the wait and see approach and keep faith as this project is still involved with Yu Suzuki.

I think some people are seriously overestimating how this game will sell, regardless of marketing.

Is this 100% console exclusive? Or is there a chance of a Switch/X1 version down the line?

Strange, really strange since the publisher gets a cut for promotional stuff, getting it on the shelves etc etc.
I suppose it's worth it in the end for Sega to pass it onto an external party, just really weird to me because it IS Sega we're talking about.
But whatever at least more Shenmue news soon, when is GC again (this month, but what date?).

I do not know, but Inhave bought a console for Shenmue only before (in the U.S. Shenmue II arrived on OG Xbox... had to get the Xbox, just had to :)... later I got more games for it, but Shenmue was my system seller :)).

Are people just playing dumb or did they literally ignore the fact that SEGA were never involved as a publisher? Seriously it was known from day one of the Kickstarter. Don't get all "oh I wonder what scared them off" when the deal was always that SEGA just licenced the IP to Yu Suzuki.

Shenhua looks a little weird but Ryo is basically a 2017 version of:

So, I'm pretty satisfied. Ryo looks basically as he should.

That environment though, dayyyyyym.

oh faces look a bit off to me.
I think they will feel a bit off no matter how much work they put into it. Originals must be approaching 20 years of age. I like Ryo's and Shenhua's look more now. But again, how hard is it to consistently use a single good logo.

Yeah. The logo change is weird. Maybe that's just something Deep Silver knocked together? I dunno if YSnet would go back on the more traditional (and well received) logo they showed off in June.

Ryo looks spot on now, but Shenhua still looks off - in fact her character model in the Shenmue 1 intro actually looks more detailed.

I have faith that they'll iron it all out over time though.

If you look at Ryo compared to some of the Dreamcast model and some of the CG art of the era, it's a pretty faithful update. Eyes maybe a touch too big, but IDK.

Shenhua needs work. Could just be a shitty angle though.

Ryo's forehead needs to be a tad bit bigger to match the older model based on my perception.

The angle, the eyes, the facial surgery, the eyebrows trimming. I just feel like... both feels less asians ?

Good, I think the project needs some oversight. Deep Silver puts out a ton of work, they know how to get a game out there.
