All PS4 Pro enhanced games (native support and boosted)

Battlefield 1 has downsampling, so the game is still running internally at dynamic 1660p on a 1080p display with all the improved graphical and framerate boosts.

All of this is mentioned in the guide in OP.

My bad, I missed the red X's

I don't see any games that don't allow downsampling and also penalize you with lower fps/less features. Which was my general concern.

Yeesh, the price of 60fps is definitely not worth it for this game. Looks like fuckin garbage.

Say on Pro a game has improved textures and 4K res on Pro. On a 1080p display perhaps don't get down-sampling, but then do you still get the improved textures? Or is that simply game by game as well? Or do you have some (Pro enhanced) games that unless you are on 4K take zero advantage of Pro, not even fps bump?
As far as I'm aware, there's only one game with official Pro support that requires a 4K display to get any benefits: Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection. The only visible Pro benefit is extra resolution, and the game doesn't downsample. So Pro users on 1080p displays get the exact same experience as standard PS4 owners.

Downsampling, though not universal, is the default for high-resolution games. By my current tally there are 125 that downsample, versus 25 that don't. (I just added LawBreakers to the latter list, which has other enhancements at 1080p instead of downsampling.)

For those of you who have not yet bought a 4K TV, I would like a real honest answer: is it worth it to upgrade to Pro?

Also, a question (sorry if this sounds stupid), even if the display is not 4K, if I own PS4 Pro I still can enjoy non-resolution benefits such as improved frame-rate/smoother gameplay, right?

1080p Pro owner here.

I bought the console because I didn't have a PS4 at all and thought I'd go for the best available console, new features such as downsampling were attractive too.

I'm impressed overall by the console, but I'm not sure I can recommend it as an upgrade for a 1080p TV owner.

Yes there are some great games with specific 1080p Pro support such as Nioh (1080p60) The Surge (1080p60) to name a couple of personal favourites. Plus a good number of games offering some exceptional IQ gains through downsampling.

Having said all that, unless you really value these things and have cash to burn, I'm not sure whether it's worth an upgrade.

It has been for me but the results are definitely more mixed if you have a 1080p set. I am upgrading within the next few weeks though.

I bought the Pro - talk to me.

Is there a TV thread here too so I can see some recommendations on what to get, appreciate the KS8000 might be the best but it's a bit too rich for my blood.

I originally used my pro on a 1080p display and even as someone who noticed the improvements, I can't guarantee upgrading would be worth it for most people. If someone was buying a PS4 for the first time, I'd definitely suggest a Pro, but it's a harder sell for OG PS4 owners.

I had 3 friends who purchased a Pro and owned 1080p TVs. Only one said he could notice the difference, the other two could not.

You will enjoy any performance improvements on a 1080p screen though.

For what it's worth, I purchased the TCL 605 for $600 and have been loving it. Definitely not as good as a $3000 OLEDs but the TV punches above it's price range, that's for sure.

Here's a whole thread of people happy with their purchase:

OP, you need to correct the Lawbreakers listing.

DF confirmed the game tops out around 1404p

Plus no visual improvements for 1080p mode.

OP. Sine Mora EX, besides being native 2160p on PS4 Pro, it adds better particle effects.
For Honor has two modes now. Dunno if the second is new. One with higher resolution that DF highlighted with not maxed out shadows and there is another high graphical fidelity mode (must be in 1080p). I have been switching between both modes and comparing. All graphical details are improved with this mode: better LOD, increased draw distances, better geometry, better shadows, AO, better etxtures, better vegetation, increased tesselation on rocks and other objects. Dunno how close to the PC maxed out version, but it looks very close.

I've updated the entry, but what I posted disagrees with Digital Foundry. I trust the pixel count, but their further analysis that nothing else is different is false. Frankly, they've missed lots of small things in their analyses recently. I try to be understanding, given the huge time pressures they must be under, but I have to say that the imprecision and inaccuracy are increasingly disappointing. Their recent Fortnite video goes so far as to suggest that there's no Pro support in the game at all. Yet it's very obvious that multiple effects are improved, using just the footage DF themselves posted. The changes are subtle, but catching subtle changes is supposed to be what they do. Instead, they appear to be blind to quite a lot.

Note that for LawBreakers, there's a separate 1080p mode where effects are supposedly improved even further. I've not yet been able to find good comparison material of the two Pro modes, so I can't verify one way or the other. Therefore, I've put the same improvement for both modes, on the assumption that 1080p does at least as much as the high-res mode.

Thanks for the info! Is there any way you can get a few pairs of screenshots showing the two modes? That would be most helpful.

It does not, 4K only on 4K TVs.

I'm so sick of this.
The lack of downsampling, for this particular game, is actually a benefit. Supersampling, like all other forms of AA, causes blur. In many contexts, at carefully controlled levels, this can produce a more pleasing image. But for an infinitely sharp pixel art game, blur is an enemy of the intended visuals. Not downsampling from 4K--and offering a native 4K version in the first place, to avoid upscaling--is very much the correct choice here.

F1 2017 happily wil support the PS4 Pro!

PS4 Pro will give F1 2017 a major boost

The game uses the same checkerboard technique other PS4 Pro games use to output 4K visuals. The inclusion of High Dynamic Range (HDR) lighting will come into its own as the sun sets in Abu Dhabi or when you’re tackling the streets of Monaco at night! Codemasters has even managed to keep things at a silky smooth 60fps to give a true sense of speed.

The extra power of the PS4 Pro’s GPU, coupled with the efficiency of the console’s architecture meant Codemasters could really go to town on the smaller details. Reflections from water on the track, reflections on car bodywork, smoother shadows — it all adds up to a more visually appealing experience.

Playing F1 2017 on the PS4 Pro with one of those old fashioned HD 1080p TVs? Codemasters hasn’t forgotten about you. The game will still look marketably better compared to the vanilla PS4. Thanks to a process called “downsampling”, you’ll notice smoother lines and less jagged edges.

So yeah, downsampling is in. Codemaster does what many other don't.

About Sine Mora Ex, better particle effects was mentioned in the PS Blog.

About For Honor, I just found out about your message now. I wanted to take some pics but when I wanted to go back to the game, it said Free Week-end is over. I don't own the game sadly. Anyone who has it, can do it. He doesn't need to spend much time. Just play training or first mission and switch between both modes instantly and check trees getting more foliage, pebbles and rocks getting more tesselated with more shadows and AO, fire holsters shown at distance, flag rods showing besides other better details like shadows textures etc on the characters and surroundings. It would be hard to get those in just few pictures. Switching dynamically when playing woukd be more apparent to show such details.

Finished Deus Ex Mankind Divided on Pro the other day. Around the hub area of Prague there is frequent stuttering and framedrops and certainly not a locked 30fps (as the chart suggests). Other areas seem locked 30 though.

Edit: slight mis-interpretation of the chart colour scheme. Thought that green meant locked not just improved. Game still has some real bad moments of stability in Prague nevertheless.

Can anyone give me a heads up?

I'm looking to pick up a Sony Bravia full 40" 1080p HD with HDR for my bedroom, I will be connecting my PS4 Pro and Nintendo Switch to it.

Will I see benefits off this set as it has the HDR features? This is the TV in question https://www.johnlewis.com/sony-bravia-40we663-led-hdr-full-hd-1080p-smart-tv-40-with-freeview-hd-cable-management-black/p3201261

Your link isn't working for me. Can you maybe try again or give the model number of the TV?

Currently playing Prey on a 4K TV. Appreciate the added visual flair but the game could definitely have used an optional higher resolution mode, or better anti aliasing .. because that image quality is not really good.

Just read around that Destiny 2 won't support HDR at launch on consoles and some other articles seemed to imply HDR might be a PC exclusive, thats pretty disappointing and kinda weird.

Even downsampled from 4K on PC the game has bad aliasing.

Hey all, I posted this in the TR thread and the TV thread but haven't found answers. Checking here in hopes maybe someone has an idea of what's going on:

So I started playing Rise of the Tomb raider on my newly purchased PS4 PRO and TCL P607 and I'm getting a weird issue. I don't know what you call it, but when I'm playing in 4K mode on TR, I'm getting a weird kinda... ghosting (I don't know what to call it) of text and some objects and stuff that's kinda purple and green? Like if I'm in the relics screen and am moving an object around (surrounded by black) I see all sorts of this purple and green "ghosting". Maybe I should say refresh rate? I'm not sure what to call it.

I don't get this at all if I use the enhanced visuals or high frame rate modes.

And I've played other stuff on the Pro and not had issues (like Hellblade). And I've watched 4K UHD Blu Rays on my Xbox One S and no issues. It seems to be isolated to this game.

So.... any ideas? Thanks!

Disable HDR should work

That's the Checkerboarding doing its work. That's why you don't see it on other modes, because the artifacts are only visible during the 4K CBR mode.

The TV only pops into HDR mode when there's HDR content (which tomb raider isn't), so it's not in HDR mode. Or do you mean disable it in PS4 settings or something?
Don't do it. Is not related to HDR or anything, it's the Checkerboard rendering doing its work. Some games have artifacts like this while others work great and have no artifacts, like Horizon. Actually, I own a lot of CBR rendered games and RotTT seems to be the worst when it comes to ghosting.

Oh, so is this just what the game looks like in "4k" mode in general?
Yup, that's just how the game looks. To be fair, I don't remember any coloring ghosting like the one you describe, but that may be the motion blur combined with Checkerboard artifacts. I just played the game this morning and there's ghosting on snowflakes dropping from the sky and when you reload your gun. I didn't see more than that.

I'm really sorry for the double post.

Ah okay, very good to know. was worried there was something wrong with my PS4 or TV. Thanks for the info!
