GamesRadar: Chloe Frazer is the Lara Croft you want

Seems an article that just really wants to say how poorly written the current TR games are. I don't think there's any need to use Uncharted as a reference point purely because any half decently written game shows how glaring poor TR is...

Not played RoTR but haven't heard it's much better - pay the monkeys more next time CD

I want to undersell it considering how awful the last two TR games were written, but even if the games were written competently, Chloe would still be more of a Lara Croft than Lara Croft.

I mean, she's the Chloe Frazier I want. She's excellent in this game but I think the Lara Croft comparison feels sort of facile. Agreed with the general notion that she was written well and Lara wasn't, I guess, but the rest just feels like a clickbaity way to talk about something that should just be praised straightforwardly instead of phrased as a potentially volatile comparison.

I haven't played Uncharted, but she seems to be described as what I'd envision a modern, more complex, update of the OG Lara is, which is why the comparison seems apt to me

I actually said this out loud to my wife while playing through TLL. The new Lara Croft is great but really lacks personality to me.

Chloe is bae, has personality, and I'm all in for her being the next "Tomb Raider."

Stop pitting women against each other pls

I usually would agree but current Lara doesn't resemble original Lara in personality at all while Chole seems to be more like old Lara in spirit. I can understand wanting to do something different but she doesn't even have basic traits such as her wit and love for adventuring. New Lara only seems to tomb raid because of her dad or 'for the greater good' and never feels like she truly loves what she is doing for the sake of it.

If she kills hundreds of people in her campaign and has zero effort puzzle and platforming, then it's not the Lara I want.

I felt that she had potential back in UC2 and this just reconfirmed it for me

She actually can pull of the psychopath yet still bae/wifey material feeling better then Lara right now

Chloe is awesome. I'm really glad she got to be the star in The Lost Legacy. Such a fun character. And she's got more personality than Lara ever did.

lol, classic-Lara is remembered fondly for a very obvious reason and no, it's not "about the gameplay". Let's not kid ourselves here...

Why do TR threads always involve people pretending Lara's looks were the only possibly reason anyone could have preferred the old Lara Croft? I'm not saying she didn't become big based on her looks, but acting like that was the sole reason is pretty dismissive.

Nice clickbait article/title.

But no. Lara is iconic gaming character, even my grandma knows who Lara Croft is.

I don't think you know what the article is even talking about

I mean, the Uncharted games will always be better than Tomb Raider, but I hope they keep making TR games because exploring jungles, solving puzzles, finding lost relics, etc. is probably my favourite subject matter in games. The more the better I say!

Also, if the Uncharted series continues, I hope they move forward with Chloe as the main character instead of Nate's brother. I think most would agree with me too.

Agreed. They are going for two different type of characters entirely. The fact that they are both strong female leads ignores the other aspects of their stories that set them apart greatly.

There were many reasons for her popularity. The industry advertising her as THE female video game character was one of them. Being "well written" is not one of them. My fondness for classic TR does not include her dialogue.

Well, sure, reboot Lara never stood a chance. You could compare a chunk of rock to reboot Lara and it'd be a more compelling character. Chloe couldn't have held a candle to classic Lara, though :p.

Speak for yourself. I love classic Lara's backstory and personality and yes, I do love the classics' gameplay. And I'm a gay guy so Lara's ridiculously large breasts and skimpy outfits have never done anything for me. (In fact, there's a disproportionately large number of gay/bi men in the TR fandom compared to other video game fandoms and I'm pretty sure that classic Lara's backstory and personality are one of the main reasons for that.) Only someone who doesn't know shit about the classic games could make that kind of dumb statement.

There's more to a character than their dialogue. Even if she was completely silent she'd still come off as a more confident, badass character compared to the reboot Lara, if only because of how she carried herself and the gameplay

Classic Tomb Taider isn't a third-person cover shooter. UC was inspired by pulp adventure novels.

Cover-based shooting wasn't a thing in 1996, besides, it's already public knowledge Uncharted was inspired by Tomb Raider of time before. I believe even the devs of UC1 even said this.

It was the gameplay that carried her. Nobody was really doing that style of 3D platformig before. Her being a woman was icing on that cake.

New Lara is shitty, so sure, whatever.

I like Lara to be a bit of an empty vessel á lá Link though, so i wouldnt look for a substitute in Uncharted.

Also this is just salt on the wound as a TR fan.

I wanna play this but really don't feel like playing Uncharted 2 and 3. And if I did, I would feel obligated to play 1 first.

Having played it: Don't think it's necessary to play any of them before. Those 4 are Nathan Drake's arc.

Basic background information is all that's required and here is all you need:

Chloe is a thief/treasure hunter who is less than dependable when shit gets real in Uncharted 2. She is the ex-girlfriend of Nathan Drake.

Nadine is a bad-ass mercenary who lost her company during Uncharted 4. She hates the Drake brothers for their part in that.
